    Genuine question.

I still find it very difficult to relate to the Luton rivalry, as we've played them 3 times in my Watford-supporting life, and as we saw earlier this month, the gulf in quality is still quite large.

    Bournemouth on the other hand:
    • We've played twice a season since the Pozzo takeover.
    • We fought tooth and nail for the Championship title.
    • We got promoted together and we got relegated together.
    • They are cheating scum though. Always looking for a penalty, always diving, always nasty tackles, always conning the ref, always with their smarmy weasel of a manager shouting in the 4th officials ear.
    • We are usually cheated when playing against them. Yesterday was a prime example.
    • The media love-in they got when we went up up was also nauseating.
I'm absolutely sick of them. They also always have goals in their side though. I hate Bournemouth but also am nervous leading up to match day. In my book then, I see Bournemouth as bigger rivals than Luton.

    What about you?

I accept that the older generation (I'm in my early 30s) will probably see Luton as the bigger rivals, but the younger generation I suspect may see Bournemouth. Happy to be proven wrong. Vote away.

Luton. The thought of losing to them makes me feel queasy. Couldn't care less about Bournemouth really.

Just FYI all - you won't be able to see the scores until you have voted.

I didn't want people on here to be swayed either way by seeing the scores before they vote.

Bournemouth are the new Leeds. Couldn't give a **** about the other team, never heard of them.

I think the Luton rivalry has been somewhat suffocated by the lack of games in recent years and playing at completely different levels. Of course an absolute killer blow was no fans at our most recent game. The players don’t care, as players have no real local attachment to their club anymore, not like years ago when players were all local lads and it would’ve meant something to them as well as the fans. Look at our game against Luton, apart from a little bit of handbags at the end, two of their players were helping one our ours with cramp - that isn’t what you want from a genuine rivalry, but without fans the players won’t give a toss.

The other element you want from a real rival is on the competitive side. All the famous derbies and rivalries are fairly even, the Manchester Derby, the Merseyside Derby, Spurs vs Arsenal, they can all beat each other and compete at the same level which adds to the rivalry.

Luton haven’t been on our level for years, yet we’ve pretty much been chained to Bournemouth ability wise for the past 7 years and it’s the competitive element which makes up a lot of any rivalry.

Luton, historically, although they seem to be no more than an amusing distraction currently. I hate the thought of losing to them, but Bournemouth make my blood boil with their systematic and coached tactics and they are more rivals in terms of current status and challenge to us

How is this even debatable! Luton obviously, the Bournemouth thing is pathetic. Yes we have been joint at the hip in recent years but it's not a rivalry, there is no animosity unless you count teenagers who couldn't fight sleep bitching of social media at each other. I think it may have been an eye opener for some of our younge supporters if fans were allowed at the derby.

Not going to lie. This wasn't an easy decision. I am still unsure.

I am not from Watford, nor have I ever lived there. I have seen 1 local derby live as a kid in the mid/late 90s. I think I hate Bournemouth FC more than Luton Town FC. I hate Luton supporters far more than the middle-class OAPS that frequent the 'Vitality' Stadium.

Have gone for Luton due to the clear neo-fascist elements of their fan-base.

I imagine the decision is much easier for fans over a certain age.

Let's be honest, hating someone just because they live in a nearby town is very odd.

I had to think about it as Bournemouth are the dirtiest cheating team we have to play in recent years however voted Luton as supported Watford since 1981 the thought of playing Luton makes me nervous and even worse the thought of losing against the scum makes me feel sick !

Exactly this I was nervous all week leading up to the derby. For me Bournemouth are just another team to play. I have never met a Bournemouth fan, however I know plenty of scummers and its unbearable thinking about losing to them. I'm already thinking about not losing the next game at their place.

Hate is too strong a word, but the rivalry is far bigger because of recent events.

The match with Luton earlier this season was about as big an event as playing Rotherham. Basically a nothing game.

Yesterday was very spicy. The tackles were OTT and the way Bournemouth play winds up the opposition. They are a nasty side who want to break the legs of our players. It's out of order.

The most Luton did was throw a ball at Ngakia in the 90th minute. That rivalry is dead now.....it's time to move on from it. I actually think it's funny that people still think it's a "thing". It probably is for Luton, but Watford after being in the Premier League for 5 years, and not coming across Luton for 14 years, it means very little.

Tough one. I was more nervous about the L*ton game mainly due to their horrendous supporters giving it the big one in the lead up. The historical significance is hard to ignore but it has never really affected me in my time supporting Watford.

But personally I genuinely hate Muff more. Almost every game against them leaves me seething with rage at their disgusting, filthy tactics. The sickening nonsensical love in that the media have with them makes me want to barf. Apparently we're meant to forgive them cheating the way to the title a few years back because the have a pokey stadium. Oh and we can also ignore all the Russian billions they've had invested because that isn't as romantic as the idea that a League 1 club at best found themselves in the prem. I know this is based on more recent events rather than some long standing history but my god I can't stand them.

L*ton are our rightful rivals but personally I hate the muff more.

Obviously we all see it differently, I can understand many of our fans being nervous about losing to Luton, but I kind of viewed it as the opposite.

Obviously I wanted to beat them, but ultimately win or lose and we’ve still got the ‘moral high’ ground so to speak of being the better club with the more recent success. Winning for them (for the time being at least) would’ve been a bit of a hollow victory really. Obviously if we don’t go up this season and spend the next few years in the championship with them then that will gradually change again. If they beat us in the return fixture but we still go up, well ultimately the jokes on them really.

WillisWasTheWorst Its making less grammar mistake's thats important

I think a lot of people are missing the point here. The original reason local rivalries exist is just because of that: they are local. People from the same area or city would support different local teams but then mix with others at work or leisure afterwards. They wanted their team to be doing better than, or beating, the rival so they could be ‘one-up’ on their mates and colleagues. Sometimes this would be good-natured but sometimes boil over into hatred.
Competitive rivalries come about with non-local teams when they are competing for the same prize, e.g. us and Bristol City in 1998, but that passes with time. It’s just chance that our fortunes have mirrored Bournemouth’s for so long.
It’s also possible to ‘hate’ a particular team for their tactics towards yours. For example I used to hate the way Arsenal players used to constantly moan at the ref in the 80s, and many now dislike the style of play of Burnley and, before them, Stoke. But all this doesn’t make any of those teams our real rivals in the same way a local team is.

  17. The fact this is almost even close to a tie is a joke.

The rivalry is among the fans of us and the scum, not just disliking a team for their manager and some antics. Eventually they'll get a completely new team and new way of playing and this whole "cheating" tag will be irrelevant. Will you still hate them then? There is no rivalry between fans. The scum up the M1 will always be there.

Bournemouth being considered rivals is absolutely ridiculous. So they beat is to a title. Only people who could possibly see Bournemouth as rivals must surely only be people who have only been supporting Watford for 5 years. I disliked Palace for a bit. I disliked Bournemouth for a bit. I disliked Everton for a bit. All for various reasons.

The scum up the road are and always will be the main rivals.

In the two home games so far this season, the Bournemouth thugs made Luton look like perfect gentlemen.
The Luton rivalry is dying on it's feet as far as I am concerned, I hope Luton do the double over cheating Bournemouth this season.

Don’t really care much about either of them. But I’ve gone with Bournemouth, because Luton are irrelevant to all except racist morons, whilst Bournemouth have unfortunately been relevant to us over the past decade.

In a few years time, I’m sure there will be a new cheating club on the block and my answer will change again. Unless Luton become a lot better and they’re actually competing with us (or they injure Sarr when we next play them).

I'm not saying Watford fans who don't like Luton are racist. Those who have seen Luton trashing the stadium, fighting with and around kids, women and children have a reason to think that they contain a huge **** element.

My point was that the only people I have seen who are genuinely outspoken in the media about being real Luton fans and attend the games etc. tend to be Tommy Robinson and his ilk. If it wasn't for them and this forum, I'm not sure I'd even know that they were a professional football club.

There are two answers here. Both are valid. From a purely historical point of view, Lootown are and always will be our local rivals. It's called the Beds/Herts Derby for a reason. The most animated match over the past decade was the Worthington Cup game. Since then they have fallen into the abyss of football. As others have said, the league game was a non event match wise. So, in all football club philosophy wise, Lootown are our rivals.

However, Muff over the past few years have become more of a fans' rivalry. We seem to hate playing each other, and the amount of dirty tricks and fouls they explicitly do especially against us is ridiculous. There is spice, venom and it's always a good game (bar the QSF home game). It's fans' view versus historical meaning.

Personally, it's Muff for me. But I do know Lootown is our actual rivalry.

There are certain older fans to whom the Luton rivalry is overplayed.
Taylor never liked it and some respect that

It was odd, I was relieved to beat Luton, I thought Id be much happier. Perhaps the absence of being there in person and seeing their fans added to that

Undoubtedly Luton have a lot to to dislike, mainly the fans, but we are now talking decades ago really. The 70s and 80s will be 40 or 50 years ago soon.
Apart from a few games in the 90s and 00s we haven’t really had much to do with each other.
I have a slight respect for a club that climbs back from non-league. They don’t appear to cheat like Bournemouth. Simply appearing under resourced and workmanlike punching slightly above their weight, which we were for a long time

All those reasons to dislike the players and management at Bournemouth from the original post above hold true.
We are in by the definition rivals with muff.
When was the last time we sang anti-Luton songs with any real conviction?

I’m sure many of a certain age will still feel that intensity of rivalry with Luton but for me it feels slightly lost.
