Luton are local rivals and Bournemouth are competitive rivals, both are scum but Luton get more scum points.

For me it all comes down to the unlikeable underhand nature of the approach to football.
As an older fan Luton were disliked by me having watched Brian Horton chasing the ref to book our players whilst being a dirty so and so himself. It was 'initiatives' like their plastic pitch and then their idea of not allowing any away fans that made me detest them even more. Tory boy David Evans as chairman was not too likeable either i recall. They have for so many years just been irrelevant. The recent game was important if only to put those deluded Luton fans in their place.
Muff are just despicable. Diving, cheating, conning the ref or taking advantage if he's incompetent, as on Saturday. Yet saint Eddie (up and coming young English manager) is loved by the press for 'little plucky' bournemouth punching above their weight (whilst being payrolled by a billionaire!) while we are 'everything that's wrong in football.' Yes, to my surprise saint Eddie left them in the summer but they just couldn't turn their back on his lowly ways, especially with no VAR. I hate playing them, we rarely beat them and my hate for them means the result matters too much to enjoy the game usually. They will be around the top of the table to f up our promotion i suspect this season too.
It is about sportsmanship. I detest the anti football Burnley inflict on us every time they play and many hate Palace purely because of Wilf's issues with gravity when in our box!
Muff are top of my hate list, Luton were but would need to play better and recruit more scummy players to pip muff.

And yet we’d often end up with the worse discipline record - mainly due to Holebas I guess?

Luton are the real rivals but we face Bournemouth much more and something always seems to happen.

Also, would you really see one of our players literally sit down for a rest on the pitch and allow said opposition to equalise if it had been Lootown and not muff?

Spot on. The only reason a (surely younger) proportion of our fan base even consider that Bournemouth are more our rivals than Luton is because there were no fans at the games this season.
I don’t like the way the Bournemouth team conduct themselves on the pitch and, during games against them, they really piss me off. But their fans are decent and after the match you would have been able to walk down Vicarage road together with no incident. Their last minute equaliser annoyed me “in that moment” but I got over it pretty quickly. As a club, I think of Bournemouth as being similar to us - punching above their weight - and I quite like them for it and bear them no ill will.
I don’t want to sound patronising but those who have never attended games against Luton have no idea what a genuine derby rivalry is if they think matches against Bournemouth are a comparison. The reason the match against Bournemouth was more needly on the pitch was partly because of the way Bournemouth play (regardless of their opponents) and partly because we see each other as promotion rivals. But I wager that the match against Luton would have had an entirely different edge to it on the pitch had fans been there.

You don’t just change your rivals just like you don’t just change the club that you support...

you would never get this “passion” in a Watford v Bournemouth game

We're behind Bury, Huddersfield and Blackpool in honours and the head to heads against Luton all took place a long time ago in a very different world. Luton's chances of being a more successful club than Watford in the future are as great as our chance of being runner-up in the top tier again.

Much as I regret the latter.

Yes, those other clubs you mention are also more successful than us in terms of trophies. We might beat them on head to head, I've no idea.

But the important point is, we're currently two points above the scum, and they are ahead of us in every other measure of achievement you can think of. To dismiss them as irrelevant makes no sense at all. Maybe when they were in the conference it did, but the current situation shows just how quickly things can change.

  13. I used to hate Luton, but they were so outclassed in our game that I came to a realisation they are irrelevant cannon fodder and I actually feel a little sorry for them.

Bournemouth have been cheating for years and it’s the duty of all football fans to hate them.

    I'm usually a big fan of evidence-based decision-making but I don't think I'll try this one.

Whole we're divided over which team we hate most, there's no doubt which club's fans we hate - and they hate us even more!

Agreed and I wonder if most would.
Dislike Luton fans, largely indifferent to Bournemouth fans
Dislike Bournemouth's team, management and owners more than Luton, although by association with their fans still a dislike

Who do we consider rivals? Luton historically and probably ongoing as we need to overturn their historical supremacy to us statistically. But Bournemouth, Id consider rivals more than say Norwich or any other top champo / bottom prem team. Went up with us as champions, came down with us, always cheat against us

Well this is a strange thread. Maybe an interesting poll addition would be to ask muff/luton but have
    Muff - and i’m under 30
    Luton - anf i’m under 30
    Muff -30+
    luton 30+

I expect that would massively change things.

Going back to the point Hogg-Deeney made, in the Fergie/Wenger years Man Utd would’ve seen Arsenal as much bigger rivals to them than City, who were pretty much an irrelevance to them at the time. Of course, the competitive rivalry will pass eventually as it did In their case but the ongoing traditional one will always endure, but their might be other rivalries that crop up from time to time and eclipse it.

I'm amazed that it's as close as it seems.
I have a range of dislikes for most,if not all football clubs and tennis clubs too come to that but Loon are irrefutably vile.
This forum must have a number of fans who,as HH24 says, have not witnessed a derby match, especially at The Kennel.

On the pitch - Bournemouth. As a team/squad it just now seems to be ingrained into them to be massive, cheating, diving, dirty c*nts and I absolutely despise them.

Off the pitch - Luton. Genuinely scummy, horrible fan base full of inbred d*ck heads.

No one will ever be a bigger "rival" to us than Luton, but I think right now it's easier to hate Bournemouth because it's so long since Luton have been in any way relevant to us and because Bournemouth are just such utter sh*t heads on the pitch. If we continue to play Luton when crowds are back it'll soon be easier to hate them in a way that you can't and never will hate any other club.

It is funny though - even though we have played Luton this is the first game we’ve had aggro on the pitch and even off it this season on Twitter after the game.

Luton fans were pretty quiet after they didn’t turn up.

Luton is and always will be our only Derby match, unless Hemel get up to the Championship.

Bournemouth are more of our rivals at present.

Don't hate either TBF although Saturday was incredibly annoying and I haven't got over it yet.

    I just love Watford.

Don’t disagree but the video was for anybody who hadn’t experienced that fear and excitement of game day against a proper rival where you never know what will happen on or off the pitch. In my view, that could never be replicated with any other team. I hate Luton’s female netball team more than I hate Bournemouth

I thought Luton were very harshly treated when they had that series of points deductions that got them relegated. I felt quite sorry for them. If I'd known how Man.City were going to be treated more recently, I'd have felt even more sorry for them.

    Just sayin'.

I've always wondered who that odd group of weirdos are who sing 'Are you watching, Luton Town' whenever we have some success. Thankfully this thread has let me know who to quietly judge.

Why do people care about them? Just because they hate us and are obsessed with us, that doesn't make them relevant. Just enjoy watching Watford and let them get on with their tinpot thing. That'd probably annoy them most anyway.
