Why is Deeney STILL untouchable?

When he stops playing he could quickly have the physique of John Barnes.

Speed of foot is great but speed of thought and reading the game, the geometry, gambling on a move is better. Deeney hasn't done this for a few seasons,if indeed he ever did.
Sheddy Terringham wasn't quick but his football intelligence was superb.
When any athlete hits thirty it is harder to recover,we lose muscle density ( don't joke!) and slow down.
He's a shadow of his former self and I think he knows it.
Happens unless you have a portrait in the attic.

It's true that he didn't have much speed of thought to begin with, sure, nor did he ever have that much speed of foot. Now he still doesn't have much speed of thought, and any remaining speed of foot has disappeared.

    This one?

The difference in his physique is unbelievable! Yes it's 6 years ago but he's a 32yr old athlete, there's just no excuse to be the way he is now - I know you're not suggesting he's any good, I'm just amazed just how much bigger he is.

It wasn't that one actually! It was the one on this link:

Both very similar though, a hung up cross and him steaming in.

    It is unforgivable.
The modern footballer has nothing to do but remain fit for football.
They are rewarded,at least in the PL and Championship, beyond the comprehension of most mortals.
How a player can be overweight, unfit for the job is pitiful. Match fitness takes time but if you haven't got basic fitness levels then go on tv or radio...oh hang on.

Pukki or Deeney in a foot race? Might find out tomorrow.

Good points - but as good as Teddy Sheringham was, he was never a lone striker. He'd be the withdrawn 10 playing with a strike partner (Klinsmann, Shearer, Cole/Yorke/Solskjaer, etc). When Troy has been in a partnership which has been given a decent run, it's usually been successful.

If our system determines we play one up front, then sadly the most he should be for us at this stage is a supersub.

Danny Ings and Southampton proved you can upset the odds with team spirit and hard work. Can you see Deeney putting in a shift like Ings did last night?

I think the saddest thing is that, whilst yes, a fair few of us have been complaining on here about Deeney (and in particular the ludicrousness of his weight and fitness issues) for several years, there was a time when he would be the very first person you'd turn to to see a player of ours putting in a shift. The way he seems to function, he's either at 100% match fitness, at which point he's running all game (except when we're attacking and he could draw a defender away or make a run into space for the ball...) or he's anything below that, and he's essentially rendered completely useless.

Taking that into consideration, it's madness, and so disappointing, to see the way he has consistently mucked about with both fitness and body composition; turning up to pre-season embarrassingly overweight, even refusing to start training at resumption now whilst claiming he'd only need a short time to recover. He has to be aware of this relationship himself, and it doesn't matter how many videos he's posted of him doing private training with some 'velocity' bloke in a warehouse when he can barely get himself about the pitch.

It really is difficult to avoid the conclusion that he has genuinely let this constructed image of himself go to his head, to the point that it's affected the very way he plays the game. Constantly doing interviews going on and on about 'being a big guy' and 'knowing how to take care of himself' whilst essentially spending 90 minutes trying to engage in a wrestling match with the opposition centre backs, to the delight of the middle-aged pundits on Match of the Day, but to the detriment of his team and its results. My question is, where is the coach, and where is a psychologist of any description in all of this? Where is anyone pointing out to him that he's not even that big and that physically he's barely effective? Why is he constantly allowed to just go out and do whatever he likes, particularly when the role he's being asked/forced to play is never one he's shown himself capable, let alone now at 32 (that of a lone striker). We talk about his headers a lot, but where's his hold up play? If he's so big and strong, surely he should be bringing it down and shielding the ball, back to goal, and bringing in others to play? Success, who is a insane wasteman, is visibly superior to him at this, and yet he can't get a game because he's so weak in every other aspect. Okaka was also far, far superior at this; how has this not become an aspect of his game?

I just don't get it, as a package. It doesn't make sense to me. He's letting himself down, and the coaching staff and seemingly club hierarchy are also letting him, and us, down, by allowing him such untouchable status even as he repeatedly flouts it based on whatever he feels like at the time.

Not forgetting that the only two players he's really gone to take out in recent years were Joe Allen and Lucas Torreira.

    Good analysis.
His overweight issue was after coming back for preseason 3? years ago having pumped iron all summer and bulking up to look more like his boxer mate.

Why he did it who knows but too much muscle weight just made him slower, much less nimble and with poorer acceleration.
Sadly he hasn’t been the same player since, no matter what he’s tried to do to rectify things imho.

Some brilliant stats on Twitter regarding Deeney.

    Make for shocking reading really.

So Deeney starts again tomorrow. As reids has said and we all can see unlike almost every other team in the land statistical analysis is not used at this club.

Just some fat fraud who poses as head of recruitment and his immense and invaluable intuition. Tossers.

In reality, since our first season in the Premier League he has been pretty crap. He's had the odd purple patch, but he hasn't been good enough to be a PL starter for a long time.

Clearly doesn't care as much about the club as he likes to let on - far more interested in his image and his post-football career in punditry.

Dropping him is the very least that should happen. If we had a single player who acted as a leader I'd take the captaincy off him too in order to 'take him down a peg'. Sadly I can't think of anyone to replace him as captain.

Thing is Deeney probably does care more than his back up striker Mr Gray ..

So basically we have 4 strikers.

2 have minds in other things like speaking in the press or having parties mid season before vital games.

A striker that clearly isn't trusted to play a whole game otherwise Welbeck should be in the starting line up each week as he is actually a very good player if fully fit and would play with Sarr very well.

    Then there is Success...

Could count Pedro but he is young and probably hard to rely on him expecting so much..

Despite all the PR hype when he came in.

Best thing is he gets injured so he cannot be picked as default. No matter he cannot run. Is bumchum Filippo thinking the season is long enough for him to get match fit ? Moron we have 270 minutes to save our status. Bunch of *****s.

On that note, just saw another tweet stating:

"Good to see Troy Deeney get another start. Has the lowest pass completion %, fewest dribbles completed, most 0.00 npxG games in Europe’s top 5 leagues for a striker with minimum 10 starts this season"

If Deeney was the legend that many Watford fans see him as, he’d put his hands up to the manager and say “look gaffer, I know i’m the Captain but it’s clear as day to all that my form has been atrocious in the past few weeks. Perhaps put me on the bench this game as it’s pretty bleedin obvious that im holding back the team at the moment”. Deeney’s ego’s too big for that though

Sky have just shown a picture of Jamie Vardy warming up, he's 33 and has 21 goals this season the third season out of six in the Premier League that he has hit 20 goals, and he looks fit and ready to go. Deeney should be ashamed of what he has become since promotion, he is a parody of a professional footballer.

New castle would be the time to drop Troy and Welbeck up front. If we are winning with 20 to go and Welbeck is tiring we can bring him on even if just to defend set pieces. It's sad to see the decline this season as even last season, despite his critics, he got 9 goals and 5 assists from 32 games. It's not prolific but just over every two games he was involved in a goal. this season it's six goals and two assists and absolutely nothing since the break. He clearly is not fit which is the bit that annoys me more than anything and is completely unacceptable.

He had no shots (on or off target) in a really open game against the worst team in the league.

Offers zero goal threat so the rest of his game has to be really good to make up for that as the main striker. Unfortunately, rest of his game is garbage too.
