Why is Deeney STILL untouchable?

That was the worst performance I've ever seen. It wasn't just the usual (being a crap target man, never getting in the box etc) - he was walking the whole time. Obviously the whole squad have no confidence but there was a game plan there to stay compact and shut people down. Every other player was working hard in that first half to get into position or to chase back. Deeney was strolling around. It was awful, whole passages of play of two minutes or more would occur without him even breaking into a trot, whilst people like Hughes and Doucoure had made 3-4 short sprints.

He's limited anyway and 32 years old now but he is so unfit, it's beyond unprofessional. It's a ******* disgrace that no-one in the club can stand up to him and stop him from starting games. He's an arrogant ****, he said that he wasn't bothered about not having much preparation as he only needs two weeks to be match fit - a direct contradiction to the season where he was injured at the start and it took him half a season to get up and running. He's admitted in other interviews that he has had times where he's played overweight. He's an unprofessional loudmouth whose continued presence in the starting line up is a millstone around our neck.

He is unfit, unprofessional and slower than a slow thing and I hope he leaves in the summer. He might have a good game occasionally but no longer offers enough over a period of time to justify a place in the squad.

Troy may be well past it and stinking out the club right now, but lets not go back and re-write history

He was an absolute monster in our promotion season, a complete number 9

He may very well realise it,given his reaction to being substituted.
Let's hope Pearson, Molly Rush or whoever is selecting the team does!

Welbeck did more than enough tonight to warrant a place in the centre if attack instead of Deeney.

If Pearson doesn't see that and make that decision then we're f*cked.

If Deeney starts the next game, I’m paying for a plane to fly over Vicarage Road, carrying a giant LED screen, with Welbeck’s spin from tonight on repeat.

If at 5pm on Tuesday evening the teamsheet comes out with Deeney’s name on it, sack Pearson immediately and give someone else a chance at picking the side.

Genuinely wouldn't even have him in the squad. Rather see Penaranda on the bench.

Why not bring back luther? He was instrumental in our rise through the divisions and our 2nd place finish. That was just a few decades ago. He's definitely more mobile than Troy.

Unless the formation changes Deeney will start v Norwich. Hoofing up to Welbeck or anyone else in a 4-2-3-1 won't make any difference. I'm afraid Pearson doesn't strike me as being brave and making wholesale changes.

Troy was injured at the start of the season, hardly surprising that we started the season on fire. He came back after his injury & the decline started.

I think the first game he started that season was Stoke at home, were incidentally he got a three match ban for grabbing Joe Allen's face. Pretty sure that was before Silva started talking to Everton but I could be wrong.

Deeney’s history shows as clear as day that he has to be in absolute tip top shape to be effective. A decline in his fitness leads to a disproportionate decline in his contribution.

So for him to rock up to training late citing some total bull about protecting is family was disgraceful and unprofessional. The guy just cannot commit long term to what he needs to do - his commitment is up and down like a bloody yo-yo, and he makes sure he announces in the press or social media every time that “this time it’s for real” .

After a lay off like that it takes him weeks and weeks to get back to anything like what he needs to be. I know it’s tough, Troy - but that’s what the money’s for.

I love Troy for everything he has done for the club but I am afraid to say he is only fit enough for the bench at the moment. He prides himself on battling for every ball off the pitch but lately we haven't seen him even contest a ball let alone win one. It's a painful decline that has happened the past few seasons with him looking less of a threat and less influential on the pitch.

We looked much more potent last night when we had a striker who moved about looking for space rather than one who Huff's and puffs his way into the box and attacking either the penalty spot or the far post.

    It's a damn shame.

I wish him well. He's an icon and a legend at the club.

But all good things end and his time is now. He doesn't want to be playing, he's not fit, again. He's only interested in preserving the brand. It's time for a new Captain and a new style of play.

Deeney doesn't "attack" any spot in the penalty box - once he's finally managed to get in to it, he stands around hoping the ball will just land at his feet.

Exactly this. It's cowardice. He runs into the centre of the box next to his marker and then on the rare occasion a cross is near him, he tries to beat them from a standing jump. If he does manage to do this, it invariably results in a weak header as he's got no momentum. He's never gambling across the near post, nor is he peeling to the far post to go up against a smaller full back in the air.

What he does is continually put himself in a position where the cross has to be unbelievable to even give him half a chance and then he complains about his teammates. One of my favourite Deeney goals of all time was the one away at Wigan in the promotion season where Guedioura hung up a cross and you could see Deeney steaming in with a real air of inevitability about it - everything was ending up in the back of the net, the ball and the defender.

Despite all his bluster, I don't think he actually believes he's good enough for the Premier League and takes the easy option of hiding behind a marker so he can blame someone else.

I wouldn't say it's down to "cowardice" , it's more because he hasn't got the pace, agility and sharpness anymore to either gamble effectively or escape the attention of any marker.
