Why is Deeney STILL untouchable?

Your post seemed to indicate Deeney needs both Gray and Delefeou to shine, so with Del injured and Gray having made himself unavailable though idiocy then presumably you agree we should drop him. You might be right, but at the moment Deeney is static and immobile so let's try something new?

That's up to the manager. As previously said we probably need a squad overhaul for something new to work. I could be wrong and Pearson might change half his team but it may backfire. If he drops his captain for example and the changes don't work he'll get asked why by the media and face criticism so will leave it up to him to decide if the bench players are up to it. The media like Deeney from what I've seen even if some of us here don't. We are just armchair supporters its easy for us to say "lets change it what we got to lose" but for managers its their jobs and they will be held accountable for their decisions.

Well I seriously doubt the media have watched as much of Deeney as we have so not sure what your point is? He’s been awful the last three games (and longer) so we really do have nothing to lose. Pearson is equally held accountable for sticking with such an underperforming declining player.

I think it relates to his image in football and his fitness to be club captain and the face of the club. He comes accross as a loveable rogue and shoots his mouth off about being a tough guy but he attacked a student who was already on the floor. If he went to jail after putting someone tough like Andre Gray in hospital after a fight Id say fair play. But Troy went to jail for kicking a student in the head when he was on the floor. That's not what I call hard.
Regarding the Championship, Im not taking anything away from what he did for us then, in the 1st season in the PL, the 2 winners he scored in tight games just after Javi started and the occasional match winning performance. I dont dislike Troy but I think his influence on the club is way too much for someone of his performance level.
I strongly disagree with what you say about it being unlikely we would be in the PL without him. With Ighalo amd Vydra up front we wouldnt have missed him at all.
It was Ighalo's goals that kept us alive before we clicked under Joka and the signing of Ben Watson that gave us the midfield steel we needed to go up. Having a Premier league quality goalkeeper gave us a massive advantage too. I view Troy's biggest contribution as being during the Dyche season. The club was hanging by a thread and we really needed people like Troy to keep us afloat. I really appreciate his contribution but to have this non goalacoring no. 9 with such a questionable temperament, character and moral compass having so much influence is a big mistake. The Troy Deeney era at watford has been a great era but unfortunately it lasted too long and will end in relegation. The Pozzo's biggest mistake regarding the squad was not signing Ake and building our defence around him. The 2nd biggest was not signing a quality centre back 3 years ago (and continuing to repeat the mistake up to today). The third was giving Troy that huge contract. He hasn't got anywhere near repaying the £13m he's been paid in wages since then. Since he signed that contract he's averaged less than 5 league goals a season from open play. We shouldve sold him to Leicester for £20m when we had the chance.

You sound like a total d*ck to be honest.

    Firstly, he was 23, he's now 32.

Secondly, his brother was attacked and he was protecting him. I don't know about you but I'd kill for my little brother if needs be.

Your point is also even more pathetic when you go on to say, "tough guy like Andre Gray" so are you unhappy with the nature of the attack or does the word "student" just mean the guy Troy attacked was 4"11 and skinny?

Furthermore, you must be deluded to think Troy didn't get us up. We had four different managers that season and Deeney rallied everyone, constantly saying we will get promoted regardless.

    12/13 - 9 assists
    14/15 - 10 assists
    15/16 (Prem) - 8 assists

He supplied Ighalo & Vydra massively.

I'd say that those players also need Deeney (or another target man before the screaming starts) to shine with the way we currently play. What is certain is that something needs to change - either the style, the personnel or both.

I know it isn't popular to some on here but whenever Deeney and Gray have played as a two we've looked far more attacking and created more. Deeney or Gray alone - waste of time. Deulofeu/Pereyra without someone to play off - waste of time.

I'd play with a two for the rest of the season and I'd make it Deeney and Welbeck to start with the option of putting Sarr or Pedro central if needed.

Yes, Im unhappy about the nature of the attack. If 2 street fighters go head to head and one ends up in hospital fair play. Attacking a student on the ground wasnt protecting his brother. It's a bit childish to call me a '****'. There are different schools of thought within the fanbase about Deeney, we happen to belong to different ones. I think the fact that you are quoting stats from over 4 years ago before Troy signed his megadeal and switched his attention to media work kinda proves my point!

What’s that got to do with anything though? You don’t know what the student did before then. Say in the midst of a brawl he got pushed fell over and in the moment Deeney struck. You have to take into account emotions, alcohol, adrenaline, you can’t make a sweeping judgement on his character based on two minutes given all the external factors.

I made those points based on you saying Ighalo & Vydra would’ve got us up. I wholeheartedly disagree.

Has Troy been finished as a starting striker for the last two seasons? Yes.

I'm not saying I am in full agreement with Moosegasm's take on Deeney, but come on mate, come off it. This is a very childish and naive description of the situation, and not one that reflects the reality of the action he took. You only have to read the judge's comments in sentencing to know that, and it's not like they've never been posted on here before:

There was a time when Deeney was incredibly important to the club on the pitch, and that should be recognised, but that time is long since past and unfortunately the influence he clearly has now stops coaches from being able to recognise that, too. It is, of course, combined with a shocking and repeated failure of recruitment from upstairs and a lack of any leadership from the rest of the team; it's not all Troy's fault. But it's just like with Pearson: it's not all his fault either, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't hold him accountable for his failings in the areas that he is directly responsible for.

We also need to recognise the reality that, on-pitch at least, playing aside, Troy doesn't provide any leadership. He spends a lot of time throwing his hands up in frustration and getting vocally annoyed, with quite a poor record of losing his discipline at times, but we don't see him having much of a positive impact on collective or individual attitudes during a game. Once upon a time he might have dragged us through a tough match with a battling performance, but nowadays he's just barely dragging himself through an invisible layer of treacle.

Deeney and Welbeck have started games already, and so far it not worked and we is running out of games. Need something to happen soon or we've had it.

Think it must be in the dressing room. All the 3 managers we've had this season have said something about his leadership this season, if it isn't on the pitch it must be there.

Just to clear up any confusion that I may be defending Deeney too much i'm not. I'd love a squad overhaul, new players, and different football style/philosophy just like most of us but we can only use what we've got at the minute and that is up to our present manager.

My assessment of the season and what we should do...

GK - couldve done with a keeper in his mid to late 20s really, Foster getting on now.
LB/RB - none of them are good in my eyes. Replace.
CB - none of them are good in my eyes at defending. Especially Dawson. Replace.
CM - Doucoure is ok to keep and Chalobah is ok as a backup. Replace Hughes and Capoo and Cleverly for better players.
AM - If we are going to play 4-2-3-1 get someone decent that can play just behind the front man in the 3, someone with technical ability, goalscoring ability and workrate (not you Pereyra). Keep Delefeo and keep Sarr for the flanks.
CF - Replace Deeney a new style would be welcome, replace Gray, keep Welbeck as a backup in case he is good after all. Get in 2 strikers of quality who can score goals and they can fight for the one spot.

Subs/ remainder of squad: Send the decent young bench players out on loan if the above were ever to happen, and sell the dead wood.

Replacing Capoue is harsh after the last 2 seasons but I can get with it on age grounds. Replacing Hughes is bonkers! Agree with the rest, but it's a pipedream so we'll need to prioritise. If we go down then we'll just have to mend and make do.

They're not known by Giraldi the Gormless apart from seven. The other four are young players with plenty of promise. One Calabria is experienced enough with Milan two others are still very young but cracks for Argentina at u19 and u17 level. So no chance of signing any of them.

What an even s h I t t e r alternative to Deeney. If Wet Spam showed us anything it's pace that will cause the most problems. Gray isn't even that fast. I would gamble on Wellbeck centrally with Sarr busting a nut to join him.

But yes he won't be much of an improvement as he won't keep the ball.

Of the many disappointments with the Gray signing, this is probably the biggest one for me. When we signed him, I wrongly believed we’d signed a pacy, physical presence, who would stretch opposition defenses and create space for our wingers and midfield to exploit.

I can’t remember who it was against, but I firmly remember the feeling of dread I experienced during his debut, when he chased a ball into the channel, and was convincingly out-paced by an older defender, not known for being particularly rapid.
