I randomly saw him at some youth hostel near London Bridge once. He was running through gags in preparation for his Edinburgh show and so we were in an audience of about 15 people. The support act was a weird sketch comedy duo called Two Episodes of Mash, one of whom turned out to be Joe Wilkinson. They weren't funny.

Victor Willis, who wrote the lyrics to YMCA by Village People, insists that the song is entirely heterosexual – and anyone suggesting something to the contrary should “get their minds out of the gutter”.

Willis says that the line “You can hang out with all the boys” is “simply 1970s slang for guys hanging out together for sports, gambling or whatever. There’s nothing gay about that.”

It had previously been assumed that the song's lyrics advised young men who were new to a big city to head to the eponymous men’s hostel and gym, where they might find likeminded friends in the communal showers.
