Do you regret defending so passionately the worst goalkeeper we've ever had?

 

The only thing I defended - which I will never regret - is the right not to have his personal life and family abused on social media. That was very wrong, and although there were only a few such comments it’s still a few too many.

I’ve no problem with criticism of performances, decisions, games etc. Everyone has a right to air their opinion. But not personal abuse.

I’d also say he’s not the worst. We had some shockers in the 90s.

 

Have you got any links or evidence showing this at all? Genuine question as I saw no evidence of personal abuse aimed at either him or his family and I looked fairly hard when the claims were made.

 

Yes, although I’m not going to share them and bring it back to the surface. I certainly wasn’t making it up, put it that way. I challenged a couple of people who had tweeted, and also warned them that (in my opinion with what I know libel law) what they had written was potentially actionable. At least one then removed their comment.

Like I said, comments and opinions on a player’s ability, performances, suitability are pretty much fair game. It comes with the territory, as it does for other high-profile professions.

But casting totally unfounded and incorrect aspersions about someone’s personal life is simply wrong.

 

We have had some brilliant keepers in recent years, so unfortunately Bachmann isn't going to compare well with them...
