He does a lot more talking than walking, which makes sense because he’s a keeper..

Not my choice of Captain, but what do I know. I had Porteous nailed on Captain and leader on the pitch.

Evidently William Wallace isn’t the national brave man leader type that VI wanted. He’s opted for the Austrian shouty shouty, pointy finger type of leader… Worrying times ahead.

 

Must be a joke surely?

 

For the good stuff that’s happened this week with the club, it has to be balanced out with something negative. We’re not allowed to be totally happy as Watford fans.

 

Hard to imagine a more odious terd.

 

A sh1t keeper who negatively impacts every facet of our play, makes his defenders anxious, can’t control his emotions and in general seems like a bit of a pr1ck.

5 year deal and given the captaincy. Unbelievable.

What have the Pozzo's seen in him to warrant a 5 year deal and being made captain? Being a good shot stopper is 10% of a goalkeepers job and doesn't automatically make you a good keeper because there's so much more to it.

Can't believe I have to watch him flap around for another 5 years.

 

5 years is insane. Even if they fancy him give him 3 years till 32 years old like any normal club.

I’m ok with Bachman being captain, IV has had the time to assess the squad and picked him so no concerns there. Not overly pleased with a 5 year contract mind you.

 

Baffling choice to be honest, we're not exactly saturated with leaders but surely Porteous, Sema or Sierralta would have made better options than Bachmann.

Captains, fundamentally, need to be calm, collected and galvanising. We know by now that Bachmann is none of the above, and I can't see anything but an increase in histrionics as the added responsibilities of his new role are piled on top of tasks such as 'coming off the goal line' and 'catching a football'.

 

What a disgraceful decision.
He should have been sold or released this summer.

He will cost us goals and for all the reasons l have posted on here before and those by other fans.

When the ref asks for "heads or tails", Bachmann will just shout "away".

5 year contract to a player most fans would have been glad to see the back of. A crazy deal.

The 5 year deal shows us that Manga and Costa are having zero input and are out of the decision making process.
Same old Pozzo and Duxbury. They will never learn.
This deal and appointment is a warning to all the fans who believed Pozzo/Duxbury at the fans meeting at LC.

It could be the making of him.

 

Let's give him a chance. Him, along with a lot of other players, would really benefit by having a head coach who actually coaches the team into unit that is disciplined and organised. Early signs under Vlad are good on this front. Let's wait and see before we get the burning pitchforks out fellow hornets!

 

My favourite of the histrionics is undoubtedly whenever he has to dive at an opponent's feet. Every time, he'll roll around as though he's been shot, there'll be a lot of finger pointing at the attacker and complaining to the referee.

Then when you see the replay, you realise they either didn't touch him or there was the slightest bit of contact on the way through. It's really bizarre and not even particularly useful gamesmanship as referees never send anyone off and very rarely book them (mainly because they haven't done anything wrong).

Can only conclude that he is equally as terrified of diving at a player's feet as he is of coming for crosses. He's the goalkeeping equivalent of the Lion in the Wizard of Oz and we've just made him captain.

 

I don't fully understand the nuances between club Captain and team captain and if it is possible to have a different person for each role.

Like others I don't think GK is best suited to a leader role on the pitch. However, if club captain is more about off pitch leadership and club representation than I think this is OK. When I've seen Bachman in interviews he has come across as personable, eloquent and likeable. He also seems to care and be willing to take some responsibility - after some appalling performances away last season he went and spoke to angry fans when it would have been a lot easier to slink off and hide like most of his team mates.

 

I'd have been quite happy to never see him play for us again

European coaches do not hold as much importance in their captain, They usually pick the oldest or longest serving team member which he has done. What he has done though is pick a leadership team, so in theory he will have a captain/leader in every area of pitch except striker, but they don't understand football anyway.

 

Think we as fans should get behind him and give him a chance. What good will ridiculing and calling him out just before the season start going to do? It’s only going to knock his confidence further when we haven’t even given him a chance as captain yet. 5 year deal is excessive but I also believe he’s completely serviceable at this level, we’re quick to jump on every mistake he makes but forget the good he does sometimes, we’re a championship team not champions league, most teams in this division would happily take an Austrian international in their net…
