This has the potential to be another thoroughly underwhelming signing (Perica, Fletcher etc) acquired through more dubious means and showing once again that however many decent players we allegedly get linked with from the English leagues, our default setting is always to fall back on one agent of dodgy background and generally uninspiring back catalogue. In a week that started with us having to swallow the fact that we are going to lose players we didn’t automatically assume would be among the most certain departures, it continues with today’s underwhelming addition. There’s very little about Watford right now to give any of us much hope or cheer. The miserable summer continues, and not even the words of Mr Permanetly Cheerful Edwards can lift the gloom very much.
This maybe true but we have had success with players from the Belgian League. Perica didn't come from the Belgian league
Yes, he did. He spent the season before we signed him in the Belgian league, with almost exactly the same record as this bloke. A whopping 15 appearances and a whole 7 goals in a league that is genuinely probably somewhere between League One and League Two standard.
The point is last transfer window we limited ourselves to Bayat clients when paying any fee. Our first signing this summer is a Bayat client. Any input from Edwards/Ranieri is largely irrelevant if they are determined to put everything through Bayat. Nothing has changed so far. I have no idea why you are so determined to defend these people when their behaviour doesn’t change.
Absolutely. I find some of our fans baffling. There attempts to justify the owners in the face of all evidence is bizarre!
Well a significant proportion of his goals came against Mechelen, Genk and Cercle Brugge, who were all upper-to-mid table (7th, 8th, 10th). so on your basis that's probably about lower half Championship level. And he seems to have been Charleroi's best player and they finished 6th. Because his stats compare very well to how the likes of Ben Brereton, Elijah Adebayo, Lucas Joao, Jonson Clarke-Harris and Keinan Davis will have done against such standard sides last season, and also better than Ross Stewart who would have been playing at a similar to even lower level. That level of striker is of the type and minimum level we'll generally need to have to challenge for promotion, and some of those are the ones who we've been directly linked to recently as alternatives. Having looked at his stats and a decent amount of his highlights I see no reason why he can't be at least as good as any of those strikers listed above in the Champ next season, and there's a chance he could even be more lethal.
I'm not defending Duxbury and have more than once said I can't stand him. I'm not defending Bayat either. All I did was disagree with you about Edwards having no input
Looking at Charleroi and they played with 3 at the back last season, often using the same 3-4-1-2 as Edwards. Wonder if we are actually looking at the systems players are performing well in. Probably not, that would be too sensible for us.
538's team ranking model provides a means of comparing team strength across leagues, and in short the Jupiler league and Championship are pretty much on a level. Perhaps the Belgian league has a slightly weaker tail, but is also stronger at the top of the division. (NB. the number on the far right of each table is the SPI/team strength). https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/soccer-predictions/global-club-rankings/
True but it’s a bit predictable where the signing is from . I mean sure everyone will give the bloke a chance to see how he plays .
Well hopefully. The last £7m of Bayat signings were so woeful we didn’t even get to see them play really.
Have to begrudgingly admire the faith of those defending this signing by pointing to the relative success (we still got relegated and he probably contributed to the negative atmosphere in a significant way) of Dennis, and completely ignoring the likes of Kalu, Kayembe and the other host of absolute shyte Mogi has sent our way. Maybe, just maybe, Edwards was given a list of players that fit a profile he requested, and maybe they weren’t all from Mogi but this guy was the one he liked the look of, but it all seems a bit far-fetched at this point, especially when you know this guy is a double Bayat-bonus payment. If the double Bayat-bonus doesn’t scream red flag to the COGs, nothing will.
You can’t make this up. More dross that lines the pockets of our friend mogi. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Thanks for this, I remember their data has been decent in the past - so based on that he's coming in as the best player of a club comparable to Middlesbrough, and in his last 2 games, which were both against a side comparable to Bournemouth, he had 2 goals and 1 assist.
I'm beginning to wonder if Mogi Bayat is Gino Pozzo's alter-ego. Has anyone ever seen them both in the same place at the same time?
