Also don’t understand how it can only be a good thing. We could sign some guy who was Isthmian PL Top Scorer last season - his club’s fans would be gutted to see him leave…doesn’t mean he’s good enough. I understand there’s a certain level of adaptation to be done in terms of expectation when you get relegated. But this looks like another dip into the Bayat little black book rather than any planned out scouting. Culture change indeed.
Considering his career record, it wouldn't have been a surprise (rightly or wrongly) to see Bayo sign for us in the Premier League. It seems obvious, but it's worth saying - the Championship standard is a long way short of the PL. We were a mess throughout pre-season and for most of the 20/21 season, yet ended up comfortably holding most teams at arm's length once we got our act together. Of course we want to be building a squad that could take the step up, but the threshold for a good signing is a fair bit lower than it was 12 months ago. It seems like he has a decent chance of being a success in the Championship.
Yes I know, but I added him as well as the other two because he's the player who others in this thread have mostly been moaning about us not having gone for instead. I do think that Davis and Bayo would also compliment each other quite well in Edwards' front 2, but that seems unlikely to happen unless Davis goes on loan again or we're willing to splash the cash (though as I've added before Gyokeres > Davis, and he'd prob be an even better compliment considering he's a bit happier drifting to the right flank than Davis and Bayo seems to prefer hugging the left).
A good sign. Nothing more. It’s certainly better than if there were a series of comments that he “flattered to deceive” or “mercenary - good player but poor attitude” etc. Of course no guarantee that he’s going to be a success but reflects positively on him nonetheless, no?
That's not what they said would happen though. Edwards says the kind of player he wants and the club go and find players that fit that description.
Those comments are based off 1/2 of one season though. I suspect comments will be far more varied from fans of his previous clubs. I imagine Millwall fans would be gutted if they lost Afobe for instance.
That’s always how it worked though. So it’s not a culture change or any real change at all in that respect. And that’s what we have been told would be the case.
As per my post for Marko, I added Davis because he's more the other who others wished we'd gone for instead; while I picked the two others because out of the 9 available forwards I'd listed as having looked at the stats for they were the most similar (as you'll see in my first post in this thread my initial impression of Bayo before having even checked out any comparable stats were that he looked like a quicker Ross Stewart, and the stats seem to reflect that).
I know. And I have real doubts if this guy is Championship standard. And if we are taking your above points into consideration, we must also consider we had been told we were keeping Sarr last time round and had Hughes and Chalobah too.
What level of English football do you reckon the Jupiler Pro League is comparable to? Also, have you looked at his highlights vid/goals from this season?
The good thing is that we have such a good track record with forwards coming in from the excellent Belgian league.
No idea who this chap is but looks decent on video clips but so do lots of players to be fair. I would prefer this kind of signing from a lower league that has scope to be sold in the future at a decent profit than Afobe for instance who at 29 is probably past his prime. Is this actually happening and anybody ideas on price. Is he a bayat client?
Outside of the top sides, I think it’s lower half Championship/L1 level. Maybe he will surprise me and be better than I expect - but I have my doubts.
Oh really? That’s just great! So Edwards says he wants XYZ and the club then just limit themselves to Mogi Bayat connected players. You should have said so before and I would have danced into the street at this double Bayat brother signing as a sign of a bright new dawn.
Alternatively, Edwards is told 'we've a chance to sign this bloke for a reasonable fee; have a look at the video and tell us if you like the look of him'....or, possibly, 'have a look and tell us if you think he's garbage'. There may be some truth in that if Edwards has asked for a mobile, strong, target man. Of course he may have said 'I'd like X, Y, or Z' and he's been told 'well, you're getting this guy cos he's that sort of player.' EDIT: posted before I read Jumbo's post.
At the end of the day, all we as fans can do is take Duxbury at his word that lessons have been learned and we will change the way we do things as a club. ... until the hierarchy react to the increased scrutiny by somehow managing to become even more obvious and conceited in their transfer dealings. Then when that happens just mock and gaslight your fellow fans who don't have their heads in the sand and excitedly post videos on Twitter of him scoring for fun against Union Waffle in the Belgian second division. All you can do is shake your head and laugh at this stage.
You initially said that Edwards would not have been talked to about signing this player and I just replied with what Duxbury said. It may well be rubbish, probably is but it's all we have to go on. Who his agent is has nothing to do with whether Edwards had asked for this kind of player
Lukebakio who basically never kicked a ball for us? How about Perica and Oulare? Even Okaka was mostly dirt. All this is is yet another Bayat palm greaser that has a very good chance of adding to the ever growing completely inappropriate signing pile.
Yeah.....a Kalu was a really weird signing.....similar to Pussetto. We didn't need him when we got him and we still don't need him. Wasted £3m too. Can't see him being part of the squad even in the Championship.
