Our comically amateurish privately Care company has disgracefully made no mention of the royal passing. Absolute silence. Nothing at all amongst the long list of threats, admonishments and decrees in the "Staff Minuets" (sic) email that we was sent out to us three times yesterday (first two efforts with inaccessible and unreadable attachments). On enquiry I'm advised that there will be NO enhanced rate of pay for working on the bank holiday Monday. There will be NO additional day of holiday at any other time. There will be NOTHING. And think yourselves LUCKY to get that! Well, if she knew the way I feel about royals, I'm sure it's what she would have wanted.
Yes, after going to Public School - current fees £36,570 pa for boarders and £20,985 for day pupils in the senior school.
I heard on the news the other day that actually both the Queen and Prince Charles are/were "socialists"! That was the actual word they used. Yes, I was shocked too. According to them, they were moved to intervene with dear old Maggie Thatcher to try to restrain her from some of her crueller and harsher hammer blows against the poor at the times of her worst excesses. Not exactly socialism in the way I understand it, but certainly more than the Labour Party has done for us in recent decades.
Wonder how many of those councillors will still be alive in a week ? Wonder how much of this Ukrainian fight back is western propaganda?
That's the thing about war, you never know what's true or not. It's usually only the piles of bodies and where they are that tells the truth. Genuine question to @Clive_ofthe_Kremlin though - do you think that Russia are carrying out a legitimate "special operation"?
It really amazes that despite the UK being notorious the world over for its unkindness and intolerance of refugees that so many are prepared to row across the channel on a li-lo every day in a desperate attempt to get here. Maybe they are just looking for a free flight to Rwanda
Nooooo! I certainly don't. It's just playing with words. I think both sides are letting off bloody bombs (again) at the bidding of politicians and generals at the expense of ordinary poor people.
Blimey! That reply is a shock - I was bracing for my computer's built-in 'whataboutism meter' to be rapidly overloaded.
Same this morning: I just flicked on the coverage and caught the changing of the guard - which I watched twice.
Well the troops (and hordes) are slow marching (in Westminster Hall) - but the crowds are a real, representative, cross section of our society. It's hypnotic, particularly after watching the videos and images of the various MP's and members of the media/slebs grief-whoring for all it's worth, it's really interesting/humbling to see how dignified the actual public are... EDIT: Guard change now - next in 20 min.
I don't know why. There seems to be this misconception that I somehow support Russia and/or Putin. To emphasise yet again that I don't. The fact I point out feverish and silly pro-ukrainian propaganda does not mean that "I love Putin" (as I've been told several times!). Nor indeed, do I support Russia because "it's communist and you're a communist" as I've also been told many times. In fact one mouth-frothing arguer wouldn't accept it at all when I pointed out that Russia hasn't been communist for more than 30 years. He just wouldn't. When I said it's not communist, he just said "yes it is" over and over again. There was nothing I could do to dissuade him. Propaganda is very powerful stuff.
Clive I don’t disagree with some of the points you make regarding the monarchy but, for someone who keeps professing how much they dislike the fawning coverage, you seem to catch an awful lot of it. Why do you keep watching it? I think you’ve contributed more to this thread than anyone else on the forum!
This really belongs in another thread. But do you also point out silly Russian propaganda? If not, why do you feel the need to fight the Russian side? I never see you take differing positions on here to create balance in arguments, if they don't comply with your base values. I imagine what the poster is actually pointing at is that there is probably more of an affinity between you and Russia/ the USSR than you're letting on. As there tends to be with other communist/ far left empathisers. I'm sure there are hypocritical things that we say about some of the worst dictators. But pointing them out without context supports the obvious aggressor's key tactics against the victim: in this case to stop people trusting the Ukrainians and therefore stop supporting them. Point out truths, but put them in context.
I agree. Our reputation of being tolerant of refugees has sadly depleted, and being the 17th best country for the elderly isn't good enough given our relative GDP. But there is absolutely no link between having a monarchy and these metrics. 8 of the top 10 ranked countries for elderly life-quality have a monarch.
Without question the so-called anti-imperialist left are soft on Russia. They are fake lefties who should have their lefty badge taken away. But the biggest group of Russian State sympathisers are currently to be found on the MAGA/radical right, because Biden etc.
The queue is nearly 5 miles long now, just shows how much Her Majesty was loved by the nation. It doesnt get more British than British people queuing to see their departed Queen laying in state does it. I feel sorry for the guard that passed out overnight but he did her proud by being there. He went down quite hard so I hope he is ok.
Some of her best work here https://thenewdaily.com.au/news/world/2017/06/22/the-queen-hat-brexit/ An outward looking and inclusive Queen.
My favourite part is telling people who don't know that there's a 24h stream of the coffin in state, and you can watch people nodding at the queen. Watch their face as they laugh, look at me as if I'm insane then tell me I'm joking... Then realise I'm not, then "What? Why?".
Just weighing up whether to join the masses and spend the day standing in the queue to see Her Maj in her box. I don't mind the idea of standing about for 10 hours - it's the thought of joining in with the 'camaraderie' of my fellow queuers that's holding me back
Barry who's come all the way from Canvey Island in front and Emily and Maureen from Virginia Water behind you for 8 hours plus. Lovely.
5 miles ? What’s the protocol if you need a wee? Just stand there and point away from the road ? If you find a public convenience what happens if the people in front and behind you, who you’ve irritated for the last 3 hrs, claim they’ve never seen you before when you return to re-take your place in the queue ? Are there strategically placed portaloos?
You could swap plans for where you're going to get your Queen Liz II tattoos? Maybe even friend each other on Facebook to share thoughtful memes?
