That was a very gracious speech from McCain.

But Obama's had a puppy in it.

Indeed I thought it was a good speech, gracious in defeat.

I am pleased that Obama won, but will need to read some more of the analysis I missed while sleeping last night in order to participate fully in the political discussion.

That is indeed true, much like there is only one Aidy Boothroyd, Ray Lewington, Graham Simpson, John McCain etc etc etc etc.....

 

It is an unusual name.

On the other hand, I bet there are hundreds of John McCains.

 

Now I come to think of it, I think there might be few Barrack Obama's.

 

I was impressed by McCain. Very gratious in defeat and also very open to cooperation it seems.

Obama's speech was very good - and very scripted I feel. The puppy-line was ridiculous.

As you should be. I know I felt a huge sense of relief, not because I feared McCain but because the prospect of Palin becoming president when McCain dies (he won't last 4 years) was just too scary.

 

It was the start of his re-election campaign. He just won the vote of every 14yo girl in the country.

 

So Obama enters his Schr*dinger's Cat phase. Roll on January to see if its alive or dead.

 

I have just read that Rahm Emanuel, the proposed Chief of Staff, was the original inspiration for Josh Lyman in the West Wing. How amazing is that?

It's pretty interesting...I see it as a temporary setback, since it will be challenged on grounds of discrimination, AGAIN, and be overturned, AGAIN.

It was just a way for the Mormons to spend some of their money on internet ads.

By the way, EVERY SINGLE TIME I came to this thread over the last week, it had an "YES ON PROP 8" banner ad at the bottom. I clicked on it each time just to get some Mormon money into the WFCForums coffers.

 

you would of thought google of all companies would of been more selective in their adverts. i'd expect this kind of shennigan from yahoo, but google?

 

Mormon money is still green...so to speak.
Political advertising, pro or con, is HUGE business. I don't think anyone takes it personally, to be honest. It's not like Google was advocating for prop 8, just selling ad space.

10,246,434 voted on Proposition 8 (99% precincts reporting) and 9,996,437 voted in the Presidential election (97% precincts reporting). So basically, no, it seems pretty much everyone who went out to vote in the General Election marked the Proposition 8 box too (and 61% of them voted Obama).

I am always interested by the comments such as the one in the inset:

I see the US differently. I feel we have a terrible problem with racism we are actively and contantly trying to come to grips with, whereas most European and Asian countries that traditionally view themselves as very racially homogeneous have a terrible problem with racism they deny or passively try to stifle any meaningful discussion about.

About Prop 8, I am also a little confused as to why that played out the way it did. I think it was a surprise to the anti-8 people. I think that many of the new energized voters are far more socially conservative than anyone realized. It's important to note that in one of the debates, both candidates were quick to say they were not in favor of sanctioning marriage for same-sex couples, so this is technically NOT inconsistent. However, it certainly is not liberal at all, is it?

Still the proposition, which will amend the California state constitution, looks to be challenged on the grounds that it conflicts with specific wording in the constitution of the state of California that prohibits discrimination of any kind against anybody, and it is meant to be very liberally applied.

In the end, it won't make it into the constitution (Which begs the question "why the hell did we vote and argue over it in the first place?"), but it will be interesting to see what mandate can be taken from the vote results.

It's this illiberal attitude that I don't understand. It's not like legalising a class of drugs where there's an argument that people may be hurt by it. How does a legal partnership berween consenting adults hurt anyone, even if you don't like the idea of it yourself?
