Once again, you are talking rubbish. There is not one example, in 000's of years of a successful nation that has survived, much less thrived, through a socialist philosophy. Take a look at how the peasants in the USSR were getting by, despite their Country being the most natural resources in the world. Only the head honcho's in their party were living well. Ask how the Chinese were getting on under Mao or the Cubans without all the aid from the USSR. A nation needs entrepreneurs to create jobs. If everyone takes, there is nothing left to give. And those that believe otherwise are idealist idiots.

You misunderstand or misrepresent what I said in my quote. I havn't said that the poor and unemployed enjoy living off he state. Some do, but most don't. What they would like is a business starting up down the road that will employ them. They don't need people like you bringing out all your little gems of jealousy, envy, and sanctimonious bull**** discouraging success.

By the way, I dont believe the "state" contributed to my success in any way. My education was pants, with left wing teachers spouting "b****x for years, more interested in getting their petty views over than teaching me what was in the curriculum. Weeks spent on Wat Tyler (you would have loved it) was apparently far better spent time than learning about modern politics and how the competing polarised political systems were fairing. That is the left wing way - avoid the tricky matters.

I've just seen Moog's response to your earlier tosh. So you believe that if there is high demand for food then the food prices will come down. Well that is a clear indiaction that you definitely do not know what you are talking about.

Pretty much, unlike you I haven't had all day to type up my views while belittling anything that I don't agree with. The stalking was in fact much quicker and a lot less effort. I'm sorry, but your picture lacks guerrilla leadership so unfortunately I can't.

No, you're just not as good at the belittling as I am. Probably because you're not as clever as me.

So, if you went around letting off bombs, killing innocent government workers to get over your political points of view, you would also be a terrorist. Mandela has never denied orchestrating such a bombing campaign.

Sometimes, I despair at people like you- picking out little soundbite gems and ignoring the overall situation. The Poll Tax charged people rather than property. Why should someone living in a big house and skint, pay more than someone living in a smaller house on that earns far more money. The world is full of these "unfair scenarios and no one tax can fairly deal with them all. But the Duke and dustman question is answered by income tax, capital gains tax and inheritance tax. If the Duke earns more, then he pays more on all of those taxes. Taxes serve different purposes. Plain and simple. Are you suggesting that a Duke should pay more VAT on his pint of lager than a dustman should on his?

Also Clive, again, you are wrong about the Income Tax. There was a total top rate of tax of 83% on earned and a surcharge on investments (adding it to earned income) taking it up to 98% in all. So at a certain stage, if Elton John earned £100,000 at a concert , then he would have actually collected £2,000. Please try and get your facts right, at least, when trying to justify your delight in someone dying.

Like all forceful personalities some will like her and others will dislike her as was shown by opinion polls at the time of her resignation.

Yes in hindsight is a wonderful thing. This should have be done this way and that way. My own personal opinion is that parts of the coal, steel and other sick industries could have been saved and remained competitive. It is a bit of a mockery when we for example are having to import coal now from Poland rather than mine the still viable seams we have both of anthracite and lignite.

Those communities have never recovered and are still blighted by numerous social problems as a result of high male unemployment. They have my full sympathies and empathy.

And the decision to sink the Belgrano remains controversial because the ship was sailing away from the exclusion zone at the time. Several of her ministers at the time and since have voiced their disquiet at her authorization to HMS Conqueror to sink the light cruiser.

On the other hand she made the world take notice of GB. History shows us all great powers rise and then they fall or decline. Ever since the twenties we have been blighted by a lack of financial muscle with devaluing of the gold standard and the pound, lucrative Empire trade and a failure to invest and modernize in technology in the factory system.

We were in an even more invidious position post the Second World War on the brink of bankruptcy. Our infrastructure was already lagging in terms of rail and road say compared to mainland Europe. Shipyards failed to adopt new technologies and unfortunate circumstances which seemed minor at the time like the failure of the DH Comet handed America an edge in aviation. Not to mention a failure to capitalize in computing. We virtually passed all the valuable information gained from machines like Colossus and handed it to IBM.

Management and the unions were at loggerheads for decades over work practices which further undermined competitiveness and productivity and which also harmed our export abilities and place in the world market. Something had to be done to break the power of the unions.

While we have been declining militarily on the world stage she at least made the voice of the GB count. Be it at the UN or in the EEC of the time or indeed Commonwealth she was not to be trifled with and she gained the trust of both Cold War adversaries and helped in the thawing process that saw nuclear armageddon turned back.

Certainly none of the buffoons that have come since can hold a candle to her as a PM. She at least spoke her mind and had the courage of her convictions unlike the present motley crew who pay obeisance today , but who themselves are like candles in the wind , swayed this way and that by lobby groups and what they perceive will get them votes.

Time is a great judge and it will certainly rank her above the men in beige suits that went before and came after her. She also trailblazed the way for female politicians and that in itself was a historical first.

I have to agree with zztop regarding Mandela. I just simply cannot compare him to someone like Mahatma Gandhi a man who never resorted to violence in his struggle for Indian independence but with whom Nelson is ranked (presumably because of the fight to free an oppressed majority from minority rule).

This is ridiculous. The problem we have is 2 differences in ideology and therefore when one person thinks something is right, another will think it's wrong. That's politics for you and is everything Maggie was, she divided the country on politics. I admire the fact she stuck to her principles, I just think that they were wrong.

To those of you celebrating her death, that is pathetic.

And to Pugnacious, stalking Moog is a particularly sad thing to do. Perhaps you would like to share your personal details including your weight? Grow up.

I put it in the hate thread, but one thing I can't stand is when people state an opinion as a fact, then mock others who have different opinions. Debate is fine, that isn't.

I think some people on this thread have selective memories when looking back at how life was before Thatcher. Has the Winter of Discontent of 1978 been re-written from history? Half the country on strike, not satisfied with a Labour Government's recommended maximum 5% pay rise, rubbish piling up in the streets, the dead not able to be buried. Yes of course Thatcher had her faults, and probably remained in power too long, but lets not look back at Britain in the 1970s before she took office as some sort of utopian paradise. Thatcher took on the unions so Britain was never again at the constant mercy of strikes and walkouts disrupting our daily lives. She enabled the average man or woman to own their own home and buy shares in the de-nationalised industries. Her Government's first budget reduced the basic rate of income tax from the 33% it was at the time, meaning we all kept more of what we worked hard to earn. She put Britain back on the world stage, and helped to defeat communism. She stood up to Europe, supporting the EU as a free market trade organisation but opposing it's desires to become more than that.

To describe Britain as a much kinder and gentler place before 1979..where no doubt we all drank lashings of ginger beer and doffed our hats to strangers in the street..is to forget it was a country where the trade unionists did all they could to cause maximum damage to the lives of innocent people in the pursuit of their own greed. Hardly a kind or caring place.

And she's not getting a state funeral either, just to correct that one. But as somebody who was Prime Minister for 11 years, surely she can't begrudged a decent send off.

Also..we live in a democracy. Thatcher won 3 elections. She was voted in by a majority. Dislike her memory as you wish, but never forget that. Unlike the unelected Head of State and all her entourage, Thatcher was the result of the ballot box.

I am glad you think I would need steroids to look like this. I'm clearly cleverer than you though, evidenced by your incongruous posting of profile facts from a different forum I use as some sort of rebuttal to my points. Congratulations. You can use Google. Here's a peanut.

    throughandthrough - agree truce.

It's an emotive subject but I disagree with your point of view. However that's never going to change. What I can't take, however, is the attempt by Clive and Pugnagious to contend that somehow people who are not socialist are somehow devoid of any humanity or empathy. As if socialism is the moral high ground. If Pugnacious was any good as an internet stalker and knew what I did as a job, the way I live my life etc. then perhaps he'd be better placed to judge, rather than assuming that just because I go to the gym and I don't like high taxes, that I'm some form of anti-human hater of people.

Maybe those of us right of centre actually believe that the best way to ensure standards of living raise is not necessarily to just tax everything and then run everything from central government.

Nobody's won or lost! If we all agreed on everything, the world would be a boring place. We live in a democracy and therefore have the right to have beliefs and express them. Don't let it get too personal eh, we're all Watford fans and should be capable of having a decent debate. I've enjoyed reading the anti Thatcher views as much as the pro ones, and have found it useful to learn why some didn't like her.

Even the Argies admit that sinking the Belgrano did help end the War a lot more quicker and in the long term saved lives, although this cant obviously be proven.

Just out of interest what do the lefties think about her stance on the Iranian embassy terrorist attack and how she dealt with the IRA on the Rock? None of our so called Leaders would dare take responsibility for those sort of actions now, will prob give them a job in the cabinet as a sign of tolerance!

Interesting to compare the reaction from those who were 'anti-Thatcher'. A big difference between saying 'I disagreed with her immensely but respected her lots' and celebrating her death.

It's fair to say the latter are utter scumbags

If only there were more politicians nowadays who weren't afraid to stand up for what they really believed in.

It's hardly brain surgery that there is so much disagreeing on this thread!

If you're a Tory, Thatcher was probably the best thing since sliced bread.

If you're more aligned to Labour, you're hardly going to look back fondly at her 11 years in office.

And as it's an internet forum, it's no surprise there are plenty of insults and dubiously bad taste jokes appearing too.
