Who would have thought warming the oceans would lead to more and bigger storms with a wider distribution ? Politicians and big business are in a class of their own when it comes to money.

Looks like Chandrayaan 3 and Vikram are dead. Until such time in the future when humans can resuscitate them when they create a base at the south pole of the Moon.

Mission accomplished as far as the launch went with multiple rotations around the moon and earth's orbit. But yes, it does seem like something has gone wrong with the mechanics. According to a team member I work with, he thinks the Indian Space Organisation have put it into Sleep Mode, but if that was true, then they would have a module setup to "wake it up" so to speak. Personally, I think it's malfunctioned in the comms area and has gone into "Safe Mode" instead. Hopefully they can find some way to regain contact with the lander and rover.

I think it's broken down as it spent a fair few days in the bitter cold of the lunar night to be honest!

Yep, that is also a very valid reason. Not sure if the Indian Space Organisation are going to make a trip to try and repair it, that could be a bit more expensive than just sending another one when the time is right. Space is chuck full of debris that we have just left floating around, but hey it's not like we can take a massive hoover up there and clean it all up.

I know next to nothing of these subjects but I do find myself increasingly gazing at little dots of light in the night sky from my bedroom window. Wondering what the hell I’m looking at. Which are planets, which are stars, how can I see something that is so far away, and how can it be that the light/image reaching my eyes has taken god knows how many million/billion years to get here, so that whatever I am looking at may have ceased to exist millions/billions years ago and isn’t there now, ….as I look at it.
Then I go back to bed and sleep like a log.

Stellarium is your friend. ISTR they were going to do a phone version - I see that never happened...

    That’s brilliant thanks. So it’s Jupiter that’s
been shining so brightly to the ESE.
I’ll have to get my birdwatching telescope out one night.

Build your own James Webb Telescope and compete with NASA. Actually, a standard telescope can give you some pretty amazing views of a clear night sky.

Pretty amazing actually through the telescope. Only 600km away. Light only takes 33 mins to get here.

Jupiter is a beautiful planet. I love the different stripes on the surface that make up the gasses and elements of the cloud tops. Amazing how Saturn's rings look solid but are actually tiny pieces of ice, dust and rock particles.

600km? Think you're confusing Jupiter with Glasgow there

    Meant 600 million km !
It is however very frustrating sitting there for 33 mins waiting for the light to reach my eyes every time I look at it ;-).
And yes I saw the stripes, though not clearly of course. Thought I might be able to take an iPhone pic through the scope but, without an adapter to hold the phone in the right place in the dark, it proved impossible after 10 mins of trying !

It is but will be around for a fair few years yet. Amazing how large that actually is. You could fit earth inside and it wouldn't make much of a dent.

From the top down it looks like it has frozen poles like Earth. Of course it's just the methane colour mixing with the clouds to give it that hue.

Looking like the first stab at Starship Super Heavy flight 2 could be on Friday. Window is between 1pm and 3pm.

They are expecting/hoping for final FAA approval tomorrow.

License received from the FAA, full steam ahead now for second flight attempt on Friday. Excitement guaranteed from 1pm Friday it would seem.

Fingers crossed everything goes well. Hopefully the spend today doing last minute checks to ensure the deployment goes as smoothly as possible.

Scrubbed for tomorrow. Not sure why, maybe Saturday or Sunday weather permitting. Back to this is it isn’t it game.

I would of thought they have done some routine checks and found a fault. If they have set a estimate for the weekend then it's probably nothing major. Strange how if they had checked the weather forecast for a certain shuttle in the 1980's it could of averted a major incident...

Seems to be one of the motors on a grid fin for the booster that needs to be changed. Launch window on Saturday is only 20 mins! I suspect if they miss that no launch until after Thanksgiving due to first weather then the holidays in the US.

Twenty minute window....incredible. Beautiful thrust stream colour too :) Every booster fired, bit of ice but that's expected no dampers or mis-fires. Well done SpaceX and NASA.
Launch pad took a bit of a hit but no leaking which is good.

It did. So close to reaching shutdown as well! The Flight termination system triggered for some reason.

That was extremely successful. Can’t believe all 33 engines worked up to staging, then it staged fine. After that all is a bonus. So much better than flight 1. An amazing sight and all turned around after the serious damage done in April. Incredible really.

On the TV commentary this morning they kept saying the rocket was going for a 'soft' landing on the moon. What does that mean and why not go for a 'hard' landing? Surely any alien life forms that happen to be watching would be more impressed by a 'hard' landing

  34. UEA_Hornet

Aren't hard landings a bit... crashy?

  35. Lloyd

Ha ha! Is that right? A 'hard' landing means stuffing it into the ground?
