Righto, we will keep him in the championship and let his contract run down. £25m isn’t below his market value anyway with 2 years left on contract. How much do you think he’s worth?

If Wood goes for £25m and I know it's Newcastle who are like a kid in a candy store currently but surely Dennis is worth at least that? If he ends up with 10-15 goals and 10 assists then we must be looking at over £25m easily especially if we stay up

Yeah bit of a winter window panic buy that one. Summer and us being down is a different story. Agree if we stay up much better prognosis.

It's two years still. Maybe one year puts us in a bind but it won't come to that realistically.

Chris Wood is 30, had a contract till 2023 and still Newcastle forked out £25m for him. You're purposely making these players seem essentially worthless despite being proven Premier League players in their early 20's.

The £25m for Wood is only relevant if Newcastle are one of the bidders for Dennis.

Chris Wood is a total anomaly, I’m not sure why people keep using such an extreme yardstick to measure against. It’s only relevant if Newcastle want to sign these players from us.

Well what about Benrahma or Watkins? I know it was pre COVID but we will surely be in a strong enough position to hold out for similar prices for Dennis who will have multiple suitors

Not sure it as an anomaly. Clubs in the past have paid over the odds for players they think will get goals and we may have a proven player at this level. Brewster for £2om springs to mind and there are many others especially from abroad. If we have a player who has scored 10-15 goals and 10 assists in the Premier League this season then surely that will put the price up. Could see him going to Arsenal or Spurs (although Spurs will probably offer £30) for north of £25m

Benrahma was £20m, Watkins is young and English, so his price tag would have a massive premium on it because he’s home grown, see also Jack Grealish.

The Wood comparison is completely pointless unless we’re hoping Newcastle will buy all of our players, if not the usual rules of economics apply.

It is an anomaly. Newcastle are owned by the private investment fund of Saudi Arabia, they also happen to be in the relegation zone staring down the barrel or relegation and their only decent striker is injured.

If you looked up the word anomaly in the dictionary, you couldn’t find a better way to explain it than Wood to Newcastle for £25m. If Newcastle hadn't been bought by someone 10x richer than Man City’s owner, who are you imagining would he spending £25m on Chris Wood?

Brewster is young and English so not even remotely comparable. Wood has no upside potential or resale and isn’t homegrown, yet was still more expensive so if anything that makes it more of an anomaly.

I mean if people want to use him as a yardstick then that is completely up to them, but unless Newcastle ignore all the other players on the planet and just want to buy relegated Watford players, you’re probably going to be very disappointed.

I think Benrahma is a good example. They sold him for 20 mil and he had 0 PL experience. Yes he was pretty good in the Championship in a team that usually dominated the oposition, Dennis showed he is very good in the PL even in a struggling team. I'm sure we can get more than 20 million for Dennis.

Lots of teams spend over the odds on lots of players but especially players who score goals. Ok I kind of get the Newcastle argument to an extent but many teams before them and in the future spend more than they want to get a player who they think can score goals. We have a 24 year old with bundles of ability who in the Premier League is scoring goals in a side that is struggling. teams will bite your hand off that kind of player whether it's Newcastle or somebody else. There a lot of teams in this league with an abundance of money, not quite in the Newcastle amount, but still with plenty to spend.
When you have clubs desperate enough (Newcastle currently) then you will get teams spending way more than necessary.

Almost entirely irrelevant to the point, but I believe Chris Wood is homegrown! Came over here when he was 17 so spend those vital years in England!

The club do lots wrong, but they aren't in the habit of giving our players away for bargain fees.

There are plenty of examples Like Doucoure who they ended up selling for a lot less than they could have previously.

Let’s also not forget they gave Chalobah away for free, when some fans on here were saying he could be worth £50m one day.

Doucoure's price only dropped as we held onto him for too long. Something about trying to retain a prem squad rather than just player trading :)
Chalobah looked a great signing until that early injury. Called up by England, Deeney raved about how talented he was (and may have quoted that £50m?). That injury just seemed to kill his confidence and his potential. Sad to see how his early promise has fallen away to very little.

  19. Knight GT

Hughes wanted to go/refused a new deal and nobody else wanted him. Sometimes you have to accept what's best for all. A free transfer for Chalobah is a bit odd though

The club were also saying that.

Chalobah was clearly a talented lad, but a career threatening injury saw that he was never likely to be worth anything close to that.

We don’t always get the best price for our players, the reasons why are irrelevant. We can’t use Chris Wood as a benchmark for what we should be selling players for, and then just ignore the ones we could’ve sold for more than we actually did. It works both ways.

Can only assume people are purposefully ignoring the point that players' values will drop significantly if we are relegated again, and clubs know they can hold us over a barrel because the players they want will not be prepared to play for us there - particularly in the cases of players like Dennis and Sarr (given that Leventhal again referenced an essential agreement that he will be allowed to leave this summer in the Athletic live he did last week).

Doucoure's value dropped largely because we were relegated, not because we 'held on to him too long'. It's an incredibly basic fact of transfers - we will not receive the same value for any of the players we wish to sell for a profit if we are doing it from a position of incredibly clear weakness.

Easy to say things in hindsight. Had Chalobah not had the injuries and been developed properly, he may well have been worth lots of money.

This guy was part of a very successful Trencin team in Slovakia who won everything a few years in a row until the squad got picked apart. None of them have gone on to achieve much outside of Slovakia tbh. For 500k he's worth a punt but he's mostly going to add to the depth rather than improve what we already have

Tamas Priskin was playing for Slovan Bratislava at the time and was outscored by a guy called Gino Van Kessel who ended up as a flop at Oxford United
