If it was announced we had signed him, all those being derogatory and saying they are not bothered would suddenly be saying, great signing, glad we have beaten Villa to his signature etc. For the record I'd still like to see us go get him, and Guads for that matter.
What a stupid thing to say. You can't possibly claim to know everyone on here in the 'thanks but no thanks camp' so well that you think I, along with the others would would retract my opinion. I will not lose any sleep if Villa sign Gestede. I think £7 million is way too much for him, and thankfully so does Pozzo.
Agree that £7m is too much and am glad that we haven't splashed out that much - although I do think he would have been a good fit for us.
Quoted as £6m on BBC. If that had performance related elements within it, he might have been worth a punt at that price.
We could genuinely have been after him. However, Villa would still have been a bigger draw than us - particularly as they have less real competition for a starting striker spot at the moment. I'm disappointed we've missed out - I still feel we need one more quality striker addition who gives us something a bit different.
I don't really rate him personally, but if our scouts rated him enough to sign him I'd have bowed to their superior expertise. They're far better judges of players than I am. Maybe he'll prove me wrong this year and if so, fair play to him.
Have you forgotten we have Troy,Vydra,Soulman&FF all good enough for the prem. With all the other quality players added to the team aswell.
Think he is a good player if you play to his strengths i.e play the ball in the air. Given that we wont be playing hoofball I dont see this as a loss, and we would have had to change our style to get the best out of him.
Fantastic business from Aston Villa in my opinion - getting £32.5mil for Benteke and spending £6-7mil on a slightly worse and slightly older player leaves them with a huge amount of profit to reinvest in the whole team. I fancy Gestede to be an excellent signing for them and think he'll be almost as good for them as Benteke was. Saying that, my justification for that mainly lies in the style of football they are used to playing - whilst Benteke is more than capable with his feet, they did tend to get a fair few balls crossed in for him. If he had have joined us, I'm not sure he would have been as successful.
Gestede and Benteke are worlds apart, and it'll show this season. 15+ goals for Benteke and Villa relegated.
Agree with this, I'd have spent £15 mill on Austin if I were Villa However, I would be very happy if Gino decided to spend £10 m + some performance bonuses on Austin, he can fit a short passing game and is proven in the prem
Again, to get Austin and Gestede for £20mil(ish) and to sell Benteke £32.5mil represents an excellent deal for me. Benteke's a good player, but seems to go through spells where he's a world beater and then bollix. Austin has been prolific for a good few seasons now, in a variety of leagues, and Gestede would be an excellent partner for him. Can't imagine many defences would fancy playing against the two of them.
According to WD Sport we wanted him but wouldn't go above £5mil and Villa offered more - I hope this doesn't come back to bite us in the a***
