Quite. If ironic. Always look to your playmakers first. No offense meant towards Cathcart who has been an honourable servant in our cause.
All we can hope for is that Deeney is only starting until King, Dennis and Cucho are all up to speed. Surely any of them start ahead of him normally.
But of course, our enormous, seismic, cosmic, fully 900º sea change in form was totally down to Xisco's managerial and dressing room genius; it was always his plan to change the team at that exact perfect moment, as we can see subsequently - it had nothing to do with Deeney getting injured, whatsoever. We wouldn't at all have watched him continue to huff and puff us out right out of the playoffs had that Coventry hero not conspired to save our club. We're lucky to have this kind of an innovator in charge, that's for sure.
Don’t mind heavy rotation and a mix-and-match approach while we have so many injuries and players coming back from internationals over summer. Just getting minutes in legs and building fitness. However, from this weekend onwards (assuming we find an opponent), I would like Xisco to start playing the more senior players together. Time to start developing understanding between players and letting the interplay build. Of course he may already have been playing his preferred teams in the friendlies so far, in which case we’re in trouble!

Wow so much for my wild prediction regarding our savior. Good goal from King Ken. Awful positioning from Troy, keeping up with play is one thing, knowing where to make the runs is another. I really hope he's benched v Villa.
The great thing is, him stinking out the place in the friendlies will be dismissed because they’re only friendlies, and because he’s not match fit… but him stinking out the place last season in the championship will also just be completely ignored for some inexplicable reason.
Well 2 of the midfielders from last season might have kicked their last ball for the club which won't help. I expect Sarr and King will be in the starting line up.
With Mebude joining the list, I make that 6 first-team players currently not available due to injury. In pre-season. But that’s somewhat generously not counting TDB as he mustered a start for the U23s against St Albans. I hope for the young lad it’s nothing too serious and they’re just being cautious but it doesn’t sound promising.
Doesn't sound good for Mebude at all. Sounds like a serious injury for one of our U18s at Royston tonight as well. Hopefully both are ok and back soon.
All signs so far point to an immediate return to the championship this year unfortunately. We can’t get rid of the crap, the players who should be staying are most likely to leave and Deeney seems to be our number 1 striker again. The problem with Deeney is with every season past his prime he is losing his legendary status and I’m forgetting what all the hype was about in the first place… except the Leicester goal obviously.
Get a new signing, get him injured. At this rate we will be fielding as much of a wonky team as we put out vs Boro' last season opener. It's good to hear TDB is almost back at least.
By the sounds of the social media team and people off Twitter who were there, it sounds like the second half with all the kids on actually wasn't that bad, which is nice to hear I guess, but we'll be starting the season with a lot of our starters being ******* strangers to one another ffs
This has to be the strangest pre season ever. God knows who starts vs Villa but Deeney starting tonight does not mean he starts against Villa. If you go on that logic it means Sarr doesn’t start vs Villa
Yep. Results don’t matter but we have injuries, players not getting any minutes, chaotic team selections, trialists all over the shop and a cloud over Hughes and Chalobah. Complete shambles.
I know we love to criticise Deeney but for the goal he moves in to space to receive the ball in the box but the ball is crossed instead. No problem him doing that if somebody gets in the box to score which happened tonight
