Thinking about it, to me what it shows is that when the sums of money get bigger Gino isn’t any better at picking a decent player. We have many more duds than successes, but when you’re only spending around £5m max, maybe even £10m occasionally you can afford 4/5 failures if you get one that pays off and you can them sell for £2o/30m. If you have the same ratio when you’re spending £18m/€35m then it all falls apart as you can’t afford to have any failures, let alone 4/5. Basically he isn’t actually great at spotting a good player, it’s just a numbers game that works at the lower level but as soon as you start spending larger sums it all falls apart rapidly. Spending more money should bring more success, but not when Gino does it.

True, but I reckon most clubs struggle to find the gems they're looking for even at the higher end, Everton are a prime example.
There's prob a dozen top world players who could rock up at any club and look brilliant, after that there's hundreds of over rated overpaid Flash in the pan average players that clubs think will turn their team into something great.
Players like lukaku..... One season wonders who then flit around clubs but never really deliver, for a number of reasons.?
I still don't understand why GP doesn't jump in for decentish home grown young players (Ferguson / Doig types) but I'm guessing that right now we just got to offload Sarr and Dennis first.?

True. When you are spending £20m or so on a player, you have to ask "why are they choosing to come to us ?". Generally because no bigger/better club wants them ie they aren't that great..... A bit like Arsenal trying to buy their way into the champ league places by spending £50m+ on players that the top 4 or 5 didn't want (eg Pepe).

The footballing landscape has changed significantly in that time which means it's much much harder to do, the bigger clubs no longer want to spend £30m on a youngster so aim to get there before they're worth £30m (see Chelsea + City etc with their stockpiling of youngsters for some examples) and it's a model that a lot of clubs are now trying to copy, with pretty much every league having at least club that aims to buy low, develop and sell high - this increased competition along with Gino not being massively rich has severely impacted how effective the model can be.

Technology also plays a part - back in the days of the Udinese TV room streaming football from Colombia/Chile etc used to give them easy pickings on any talent that most European clubs simply didn't have access to. Now with the advent of WyScout and other similar video platforms you can filter by age of anyone making their debut in any part of the world (so I can literally say I want to see a list of anyone who's made their debut in South America this season who's 17 years old and then watch clips of them in 5 clicks of the mouse), which again adds another layer of competition.

There's of course young talents out there that want to join us but we need to move super quickly (making the transfer riskier) in order to get it done (like buying Asprilla after he'd barely played 10 senior games, Joao Pedro before he'd even made the step-up to the Fluminese first team, Cucho at 16 years old)

Not to forget the game Football Manager. The database on that ‘game’ is immense. Even scrubs like me, who have precisely 0% experience in football scouting, are able to analyse and look over leagues across the pond and pick out up and coming South American players with promising stats!

Definitely - some football teams even pay SI to get an early glimpse of the upcoming releases database before it's released to add an extra layer to their recruitment. With Miles being a Watford fan and our partnership with FM I'd be surprised if Watford weren't one of the teams to benefit from that!

Didn't offer the right money to the Hibies and they turned us down. These are some of the multiple opportunities on young players Gino Pillock in his infinite wisdom has passed on.

All of whom would gave turned a very tidy profit. Look at the dregs up the road. While we may be chasing yet again OTH players they ate looking at Holmes and Abbey at Reading.

    Young players with real potential.

He doesn't seem as if he's really pulled up trees at Verona and isn't a guaranteed starter, and Marseille are paying £4.3mil for him which isn't exactly a huge fee. In fact, Verona bought him for £3mil themselves and Hibs have a 25% sell-on fee, so Verona are hardly making anything on the deal.

Marseille in Ligue One isn't really much of an upgrade either from Serie A. Really this is a bit of a sideways move.

We did end up buying a relatively young defender from Hibs and he's been meh.

Verona are only making £1mil profit on the Doig deal, which while not nothing would not be the kind of return the Pozzos would probably aim for from a young player. It's not indicative of the transfer having been a major success anyway.

We did sign Porteous from Hibs though, who is also a bit meh.

    Gotta agree with this.

Maybe missing out of Doig allowed us to get the Kamara deal over the line, and we sold him for a huge profit after a couple of years putting in stellar performances.

Just wait until people find out how well Lewis Ferguson is doing and the price he’s being touted to Juventus for - still, I’m sure some will say it’s a sideways move and it allowed us to buy Juraj Kucka.

Saying we shouldn’t have bought Doig because we got Porteous who has been average - thank god we never signed Brian Laudrup, as Charlie Miller was terrible.

Still, all’s well but ends well. Thank god we avoided this clear disaster.

i thought David Jurasek was going to Marseille. I suppose we will just have to get him on loan :p

Not me, that's a different player and Kucka was cack. If there was an event which you wanted to turn in to a wider then you should have bumped the Ferguson thread, rather than over-inflating this not particularly good example.

Simply not the level of return Pozzo's look for in a young player mate. If we can't show the kind of returns made on Okoye then they aren't going to waste their time.

Fee isn’t high enough m8. Not worth getting out of bed for less than £8m on a player we’ll loan out next season.

Wasnt it Ferguson and Doig who where two of the players we potentially missed out on because what little transfer kitty we had got wasted paying £4mil over his worth for Bayo?
