Just seems like a crazy amount of money to spend on a player who relies on one sole characteristic (his shooting). If we do have that money to spend we should try and spread it across a number of acquisitions (though I recognise that would require higher salary costs e.g Ahmedhodzic (3m), Whiteman (5m), Davis (5m) and Archer (loan)). Piroe also isn’t homegrown! I reckon Piroe will have a good career just doesn’t seem like a good use of what we can presume to be fairly limited funds.

10 is a sort of attacking midfielder/playmaker - very different to any of those sort of players (but you're right in the second half of the post - I think he'll most likely be dropping deeper)

Mitrovic, Toney, Deeney and Solanke are all 9s.

10s are Bruno Fernandes, Mason Mount, Kdb, Bergkamp etc.

Of course it is, complete brainfart, thanks. I played number 10 in sunday league but was a 9, so instantly think of myself rather than fat Ronado (not that we had anything in common whatsoever).

Yeah he did, think that's probably his best position - he doesn't have the pace to be an effective wide-player and lacks the finishing ability to be a pure striker. Imagine he'll be a #10 this season with Asprilla probably on rotation (or maybe Quina if Asprilla isn't up to standard yet and gets a loan)

Not a phucking chance we sign this one, but it’ll get the masses on Twitter excited. Job done.

If we really want to pop this all on one player surely Semenyo at Bristol City is a better fit in the same price bracket. A much better all round player and homegrown too (I think).

Yup, i've been singing his praises for a while now. Would much prefer him - versatile as well so if we decide on playing with wingers we've got options other than Kalu/Hungbo.

Ah yeah, forgot about Baah - although I wouldn't be against a loan for him. He's barely played (even for the U23s) since he signed for us and think he should get a loan so he can get some proper football under his belt.

Perhaps they didn't anticipate getting such a big offer for Cucho, which now puts Piroe on the table. Lots of possibilities, really.

I'd love to be wrong, but Piroe would need to be our third most expensive signing ever - just can't see it!

Where did you see that? Wyscout has his xG as 13.43.

Aside from being homegrown why do you think he'd be a better fit?

Would be a shift for sure. Probably worth noting, though, that whatever Swansea are publicly saying they want likely isn't what they'd accept. Only poor salesmen start the bidding at the lowest price they'll take. I'm sure they're padding it by a couple of million at least.

Statsbomb (a much better xG model that WyScouts - WyScouts only takes into consideration the location + whether the shot was header or foot)

I think Reids’ post above as well as the radar he shared were very on point. Piroe is excellent at shooting and had historic levels of overperformance of his xG. That’s not really sustainable. I think intuitively we think of players as good finishers but no player has tracked at almost double their xG across their career so that will likely revert to the mean at some point.

Aside from the shot over performance issues, I’m not really sure what other qualities he brings. He isn’t particularly good at hold up play or passing or in the air and has to play a specific role (number 10 or deep lying forward in a two) that is quite restrictive. Semenyo could play in a two, on the wing, or perhaps even as a lone striker, and is just an excellent all round player. Excellent in possession with his passing and one of the best pressers in the division too.

I think it all comes down to how we want to structure our front 2/3. Archer/Davis/Piroe are all very very different. Perhaps Rob has said to go and get quality forwards and he’ll figure out how to make our forwards complement each other afterwards?

Aside from not really wishing to play on the wing I think Gyokeres has an even better all-round game than Semenyo, as well as most importantly being a better goalscorer. Semenyo's pressing might be a tad more, but Gyokeres isn't far off and it's not enough of a difference to make up for Gyokeres' superior goal threat.

I agree though that Piroe doesn't seem to offer a huge amount more than his goalscoring, though it's not as if his all-round game is completely terrible.

As I've said earlier in this thread the biggest bonus with him is that he's left footed and so prefers being more on the right side of the pitch. It does make sense to sign someone there for Edwards' front 2 given that Bayo and JP are right footed and prefer the left flank. Otherwise we could end up with two CFs who step on each others' toes. For this reason alone Piroe does seem a better fit than many of the other options, even if he isn't necessarily an all-round better player yet.

Piroe is still young and could improve other aspects of his game anyway, and if the quality of his shooting this season isn't a fluke then I don't think many will care about the rest of his game so much.

That rules Semenyo out of the conversation entirely then.

    Nein.

I think that sums up the move entirely - if it's not a fluke and he can repeat it then it it looks a great transfer. If it is a fluke then it's an expensive mistake to make. For me the risk (the cost) vs the reward isn't justifiable.

Don’t know where Gyokeres came into the conversation but Semenyo had 20 G/A in 2100 mins versus Gyokeres’ 22 in 3500 mins.

Semenyo is the same age as Piroe so just as likely to improve.

Piroe’s left footedness does seem an asset but not really enough of an asset to make up for other deficiencies in his game. Don’t get me wrong - a great player - but I think we can do better at the price.

Piroe looks like he's as comfortable on his right as his left.

Yeah he strikes the ball well with both feet. Doesn’t do too much else though.

Stats are so useful, but still, it's important we're not too wedded to them without actually watching the player, OK, his overperfomance on xG is pretty spectacular, I don't expect him to outdo it by THAT much every season, but as has been mentioned here, he's a great striker of the ball so I think he might be something of an xG buster

This is why I’d completely avoid Gyokeres — whilst he’s a mobile target man, his ball striking ability and composure in front of goal is eek to say the least. Piroe has great ball striking ability, that won’t change — what will change is if he can keep up the wonderstrikes, which isn’t sustainable unless you’re Messi esque. But going from 20 goals to 11 goals Isnt awful — but is it worth £12m+? I personally would take the risk, but can see why clubs wouldn’t

  35. Hogg-DEENEY!!!

    Hogg-DEENEY!!! Squad Player

Highly doubt we go for either given funds, but we've already signed one 'big man', so I would guess we're more in the market for a smaller striker/number 10. For me, Piroe is already pretty good, but who's to say, having found his feet in England with a team who were a work in progress, he can't go on and improve and become someone who will bag 20 goals a season without a massive overperfomance in xG?
