Agreed, but I guess the point of the post was that we can almost rule out 90% of rumours straight away if there would be a fee involved. Of course they may change tactic but they do seem to be quite rigid with their transfer work.

 

They do. They are profligate or tight. I think they flip a coin to decide which on any given day.

 

And now we're back in the small time, with Premier League wages dotted around the squad limiting our options in the transfer market. Look who arrived in the summer to bolster the squad - Troost-Ekong, Sierralta and Perica on permanent deals, Garner and Murray on loans. Ngakia seemed to have been sewn up before relegation and our first signing in the winter window is a free.

That's our lot now I think - Udinese players, loans and frees - exactly as it was last three seasons we were in the Championship. I suppose there's a chance we might pay a small fee this window but I don't think we'll be spending much. Guessing this chap would cost £2m+ and don't think we'll want to spend that.

 

I think that’s right. There is a possibility it may have been different, but our poor finances and Covid have put that to bed. Worryingly, have Udinese even got the depth to help us this time around?

I’ve banged this drum for so long, but this really would be stupid to miss out on him.

Don’t tell me we don’t need a LB. we have one natural LB at the club and Kiko who can fill in. Ngakia is woeful at LB.

Blackburn Rovers have bid for Crewe's promising left back Harry Pickering.

Tony Mowbray wants to strengthen his defensive options, and it is believed the 22-year-old could cost around £750k.

• We probably had initial discussions but it's not a priority.

• How do you know we didn't try and sign him?

• Low xG.

• We have Masina back now and he looked decent.

• He's not good enough anyway.

• No Champo experience.

• How do we know he can step up? Lower league players never step up to a higher level.

Although this might mean they are sending Barry Douglas back? And let’s face it, he’s class...isn’t he?

Or maybe they are keeping Douglas and still signing Pickering, thus making sure they have depth in every position. Can’t imagine any club does that though...

 

The way I see it, the Pozzos refuse to take risks on defensive players. Every signing they make has one eye on profit and they still have it in their heads that only strikers/wingers will be able to fetch big fees. 10-15 years ago they’d be right but these days the big clubs are happily chucking £50-80m at defenders too.

Pickering is probably viewed as a gamble due to the level he’s previously played at and even a small cost is not seen as a worthwhile gamble.
Pozzo would rather spend £5/6m on another no-mark striker who’s not good enough for League One and add to our pool of awful forwards who can’t contribute and we can’t get rid of.

 

Reality check. We can't compete with huge clubs like former Prem League champions Blackburn. Know your place.
