Absolutely. I was exaggerating to an extent by including them with Arsenal and Swansea.

Barcelona-esque football only works if you have 11 incredible players on the pitch. Otherwise you just go backwards.

Absolute shocking price i would have held out for at least 5mil. We have had bids from 3 different clubs whats the point in accepting an offer like that 4 days into june. Rogers is a canut.

I wonder if the ACTUAL release clause was £3.5 million...

    Just saying loike.

p.s. still haven't actually seen it confirmed that we've accepted it, just that we are considering it...

:sign15: finally someone in this thread talks some sense.

i dont know for sure, but the general consensus is that there is a clause. anyone saying we should hold out for 5m minimum is leaving in a dream world.

i like danny but to be quite honest, i wouldnt pay 5m for him to bring him to my club. at the start of the summer i said i reckoned 3.5m was a fair price for danny. he is not proven at the top level, goes through barren spells and is not getting any younger.

is this is 3.5m up front with add ons i will be rather satisfied by the deal.

Personally I think £3.5m is a fair price for a player with only 2 seasons playing at Championship level & maybe a handful of games in the Premiership for Middlesbro'.
For any buying club he represents a risk at a higher level as the price is based on one exceptional season. He's 24 I think so not a promising youngster as such.

Millwall are selling Steve Morison to Norwich for £2.8m. He has one season in the Championship and 15 goals but his price will be pushed up as he's played Internationals (7 caps 0 goals for Wales). He's 28 so approaching his prime. We're getting £700,000 more than an International player if you look at it that way!

James Vaughan is going for a reported £2.5m to Norwich from Everton. This a 22/23 year old with over 40 games in the Premiership and a number of U-21 caps for England. He has a scoring record of 1 in 4 in the Championship, has played at a higher level than Graham as well as being younger and we're getting £1m more.

Craig Mackail-Smith is quoted to be worth £3m to £3.5m. Another player who the selling club can claim to be an International (albeit only 1 or 2 caps) and who scored 1 in 4 in the Championship for a relegated side and has been pretty prolific in League 1. Should probably be valued about the same as Morison.

Shane Long, same age as Danny Graham, has 19 caps for the Republic of Ireland and scored 6 times as well as having a 1 in 3.9 scoring record for Reading which includes playing in the Premiership.
At £5m he's worth an apparent £1.5m more than Graham but does have more experience at higher levels. £5m is probably a fair price tag.

Statistics can be made to read however you want to read them I suppose but in view of what I've written above I reckon £3.5m sounds about right.

Some good points made, with a nice touch of research, but the facts will always remain though. Danny Graham was the Championships top goalscorer. He's only 25, and there is more than one Premiership club interested in him. Watford have no other saleable asset of such worth, so it's a one time deal to try to sort themselves out. They seem to have jumped at virtually the first opportunity to sell. They have all summer to do a deal with Graham and it's only 4th June. A screwed club would play hardball and say, if you want our prize asset, you will need to pay over the odds for him, especially if your name is Brendan Rogers!!. I can accept Graham going if it's a great deal for the club, but it's not. To me this is the same as when WBA stole Robbo from us.

You are in possession of the contract are you? Where have you seen Danny Graham has a £3.5million release clause or are you making things up?

ahh yes you see danny asked me to file it away somewhere safe for him :dismay: pathetic. i got this info from someone whom i trust. if you dont trust me then fine, but don't accuse me of making something up, thats not who i am.

Optimistic Hornet is right, the release clause is £2.5m

Had Graham been the top scorer in the Championship for 2 seasons running then his price would be more but as I said in my original post his price is based on one exceptional season.

The one thing I left out of my original post regarding why I thought £3.5m is a fair price was our financial position and your point about Robinson reminded me of this. Clubs will try to get a cheaper deal because we are desperate. We didn't roll over at the first offer though and two bids of £2.5m and one reported to be £3m were refused.
Maybe if 'bigger' clubs were to come in for him then we might've gotten more but only two newly promoted clubs and one middle/lower Premiership club have bid.

We also need to raise money through player sales to exist so to run the risk of pricing our most saleable asset out of the market and leave ourselves with a financial shortfall would be daft.
This way we get a fair price (in my opinion anyway!), money in the bank early and time to go after any transfers of our own with a known budget.

Who knows, maybe we needed to sell Graham early to guarantee any incoming targets already identified?

That's why we turned that offer down. Yes, the release clause MUST have been £2.5m then :forehead:

I have people close to the club too who know nothing about a release clause. I'm not accusing you of lying, but I suspect your contacts are guessing as only a few "key" people actually know this.

    Top scorers since 2002:

    Tolerov (or whatever) - free

    Andrew Johnson - £8m

    Ellinglump - £3m

    King - £3m

    Cureton - £825k

    Ebanks-Blake (twice) - £1.5m

Nicky Maynard/Whittingham - still at their clubs.

£3.5m seems to be there or thereabouts the going rate. I'm sure all the fans of these clubs thought they could have got more.

Ron, I'm not trying to belittle you, but dont you know how a release clause works? If the club in question offers that amount, then the selling club HAS to sell at that price, unless the player doesn't want to go. The fact two clubs had this offer turned down proves there was NO release clause for £2.5m. If I were you, I'd get new sources.

£3.5 million is still a great price, but i think 4 days into june is a bit early to let your most influential player go when 3 clubs possibly 4 are interested in bidding for him. I recon £4 million would've been fair but at the end of the day if the club needs it then fair enough i would prefer to see Graham go than us get into trouble when the new owners have just come in. Aswell other clubs now know our guidelines so if anything we won't get anything higher than £4m. But if Graham does want to go to Newcastle and back up north he could reject swansea's terms to try and get Newcastle bidding for him for the move to an already established premiership club.

to clarify i believe his release clause to be around 3.5m, i fear you have been taking ron seriously.

Just to clear things up, the post by wfc4ever has me quoted as saying...

this any club will struggle and eventually we will be relegated. It's no coincidence teams with money succeed and teams without struggle. We need to be on the right side of the fence

...which was in fact said by hornetboy1

We all knew that DG would be leaving, although all of us are probably dissapointed to see him go and especially to BR/Swansea.

I don't think that it is REALISTIC to suggest DG is worth 5mil. IMO he is worth in the region of 3-4mil. 3.5 mil is a fair price.

As others have suggested 3mil is about the going rate and DG has only played two Chump seasons with only 1 of them being exceptional.

If this is true and DG is leaving, no one can blame him for wanting to play at the top level and at a club were he will play most games. Good Luck DG, thanks for the time you've been here :sign15:

but we had a situation previously when people were cacking their underwear because we hadn't bought any players as such and the season started in one week -and were moaning we had lost our potential targets....

maybe this season we want to be in a position to sign the player or players who we CAN AFORRD within the wage structure and budget and get thenm in pre season and working with the suad for the start of the season.

What ever the board, the owners or who ever do - fault will always be found because basically, humans are scum canuts and bears rule!:sign15:

But despite the awful spelling of Delly263, he actually speaks a lot of sense - it shows other clubs what we are looking for and £3.5m is a reasonable return for his talent in my eyes. It would be nice to be in a position to get new players in for the full pre-season, maybe this is what we are trying to do for a change.

As you say someone, somewhere will pick fault - but that's there problem...

Because if you say yes at the end of August you have no money and all of your targets have gone to other clubs.

Not yet Snowy, appears to be speculation that has been universally accepted by the media through SSN. £3.5million is a fair price for him, would loved to see get a bit more for him but it's better than nothing. Other clubs have yet to put there oar in so Monday will be a big day in this saga with the possibility of more bids coming in.

Btw is it coincendence that Joy Division- Atmoshphere came on whilst reading this thread?

I can see why some if not most of you are expecting more money than the rumoured 3.5mil however you can't always link it to other transfers. I meen he may not be in his prime but i saw today Joe Cole looks likely to be moving to tottenham for 3mil, 500k LESS than Danny Graham is worth if you look at it like that. Each club is different and has different needs for the money, so therefore some will accept lower. As gutting as it is, we brought him for what, 250k a few years ago? Couple of good seasons in the championship, was our best player, and sold him (potentially) on for 3.5 million, not bad imo. Having said that, i do think it is essential that we have a similar bargain in line, as quite obviously the majority of money will not go towards players, but at the same time if he goes we do need a replacement.
