Erm, where do I say that?!

I say that our attack was good enough to compensate for our terrible defence to just about scrape us enough wins.

Having Sarr was enough of a difference.

We scored 47% of our entire goals for the season in just the 12 games up to him getting injured.

    As I say, deeply confused.

You’re making arguments based on two players replicating form in a tiny window for the entire season, that isn’t how football works.

If my clear and concise argument somehow confuses you then I can only conclude that you are deeply stupid.

Again, strike that 5 goals out of your list right now, because you're surely not still pretending the Everton game was anything other than a clear indictment of Sarr's performances and attitude at the time - you cannot possibly use it as any kind of evidence for how much better he made us, or more of a threat we were with him - the opposite, in fact. It exposes the entire argument. #Context

It’s not worth arguing with Rousey boy, he’s got some weird fan boy crush on Sarr which is directly opposed to literally everyone else in football, hence why he’s still our player and we can’t even shift him for £20m.

There is no point in presenting facts into the argument, Sarr was our saviour and a tiny bit of form against and out of sorts Villa on the first day, and a Farke managed Norwich who won 5 premier league games is a enough of a sample size for him to draw all sorts of crackpot conclusions.

Why do you need to make a statement like that ? Why can't you just accept that you hold a different point of view to "Rousey" and others without hurling insults ? It's possible to have a good old debate with the likes of Jumbo and Burnsy and end up agreeing to disagree but you always have to ramp it up with insults which makes the exchnage a thoroughly unenjoyable exchange.

    Again, erm, how?!

For instance, I can completely understand how after their respective seasons Dennis would be a more easily saleable asset. Plus I have absolutely no idea how Sarr could be effectively utuilised under Edwards if we had to keep him.

Because your arguments about him are not in the least bit logical and completely contradicted by your other posts. The only logical conclusion is your judgement about him is clouded because you want him to be a player he just isn’t.

You've not even come close to attempting to demonstrate this.

Simply saying something is "illogical" or "contradictory" without being able to point out how, where or why doesn't function as an argument.

Interesting how only good results can be ‘freak results’ as long as it fits someone’s argument.

Norwich at home comes to mind straight off the bat. And every game where Sarr played and we lost is a ‘freak result’ in my book. Our true position when you adjust these to wins was a top half finish.

The point is some opponents play worse than expected and some play better and over the course of the season this will generally average out. You can’t pick and choose which results should count and which don’t.

As you can't completely ignore the context of the position in the table or positive results. It's childish to talk about results 'counting' - that's obviously not what's up for debate. It's an analysis of what you can draw from one result to another, based on the various contextual factors. You can't just say 'you win some, you lose some' and draw from that that it will/would all be fine. It literally never is for three teams, for a start.

Personally I'm not sure how Norwich at home would count as a freak loss, either, except in the way that 'freak' is used as an insult rather than an adjective. It shouldn't have happened, but there was nothing in the game that suggested we deserved not to lose, or that we had any special excuse for doing so (other than being an utterly shyte team, of course).

Norwich had 2 shots on target in a 3-0 win, and an American scored his only 2 goals in the entire season, one of which being a scorpion kick. It was a bit of a freaky day

We also had a relatively easier start to the season, we weren't playing particularly well even when we were picking up a decent amount of points on paper. Sarr played fantastically against Villa...but outside of moments where he popped up with goals or assists, it's difficult to remember many games where he actually played well

No, absolutely, I agree, it was freaky in the way it played out, but not when it comes to the actual reflectiveness (probably not a word) of the result - we were comfortably the worse side and the writing is really on the wall when, as you say, you allow Josh Sargent to score multiple goals against you. We offered almost no offensive threat and crumbled against the only team worse than us in the league.

I only remember it vaguely but I thought we offered more than them, but their two shots on target went in and we stuck one in our own net. Just had a look and we beat them on xg too (1.31-0.93)

An obvious response but I feel like I recall a fair amount and we did the classic Watford wind-down in playing increasingly shambolically, including the floodlight failure and Dennis' eventual idiotic red card. Hope my memory isn't playing tricks.

    Yes you must.

As the rest of us said at the time, the performances, the nature of the opposition and the fixture run up after that point made it absolutely clear we were in deep ****.

The sacking of 2 managers and the relegation that followed was on the cards, but some of you didn't see it.

We stayed up for several years and managed to swallow the damage done by signing Gray.

A terrible, terrible signing, but if you look for a sliding doors moment as to why we are where we are as a club now, it's that summer we neglected the rest of the team to sign Sarr for a massively inflated fee.

When we bought Gray we at least needed a striker, we just bought the wrong one. Our defence wasn’t as bad then, but it’s essentially the same defence we have now and by the time we bought Sarr (who we didn’t need) it needed major surgery.

Sarr was crap all last season and we were going down whether he got injured or not. There are also some people who kid themselves into thinking we would have stayed up if Deulofeu hadn't done his knee against Liverpool.

We were going down in both seasons regardless of those two players getting injured.

  32. Carpster

    Carpster Squad Player

Disagree. Especially on the Deulofeu injury. Sarr was poor for most of the season agreed, I only believe he really showed up under Xisco. Villa home he was unplayable at times, Norwich away too. He just didn't use his God given ability. Can and has won games on his own.

  33. a19tgg

We were only a point behind Villa in 17th in 19/20, I think there is certainly a chance that a bit of Gerri magic in just one game that was a draw gets us an extra 2 points, although I’d agree it was by no means guaranteed.

Agree though that there was no way in hell we stay up even if Sarr was fit the entire season, yes he had more of an impact before he was injured than after, but he was also massively ineffectual in plenty of games in that period too. You can’t extrapolate form from a small sample size and assume it would be replicated over the rest of the season, especially when he did actually play games after his injury and was awful.

Sarr was crap at Norwich. It was two absolutely dreadful teams and he scored (twice I think) but he was absolutely shyte and was getting plenty of pelters from the away end because of how disinterested he looked.

I think we always have to remember the following when discussing results against a Farke managed Norwich as well:

    Matches 49
    Wins 6
    Draws 8
    Losses 35
    Goals For 31
    Goals Against 101

We had a 100% record against Farke and they were utterly dreadful under him as a PL team. Sarr was great for us in the championship and he did well for us against a championship team playing in the PL too, how much can you draw from that? it’s hardly any basis to say he would’ve done just as well against actual established PL teams, with much better managers and win records better than 10%, in the games he missed whilst injured.
