Most PL footballers are the exact same, and I say that as someone who regular works with them and sees what they're like behind the scenes. I think Danny Rose just doesn't give a **** what people think about him anymore.

 

Why would we choose to get rid of an improved Masina to replace him with someone who has not even played a minute of football for the entirety of last season?!

This surely means that Doig is not as much of a done deal as you've indicated and Rose will be our back-up LB instead.

I wonder if one of the reasons for going with Rose over Doig though might be not only because Doig has had other offers, but also because the club might have wanted to offer Tomas Galvez a clearer route to the first team in the next couple of years in order to persuade him to stay, and having two relatively young left-backs in Doig and Masina might have blocked his progress. However, Rose will clearly be a relatively short-term backup meaning Galvez should have the opportunity to be second choice in a couple of seasons.

That would make little sense - Rose is near-enough a has-been and Doig is still pretty raw and untested. Masina is probably better than both at the moment, in the statsbomb thread he certainly came out ahead of Doig in their stats comparison.

 

Interesting idea, I like that. Although I'd be surprised if we were that forward thinking in terms of player development!

 

Because Masina was poor in the PL last time around and improving in the Championship was to be expected surely? Not sure it's a guarantee that he's become a better player...

Mourinho seems to be a common factor in players with perceived 'attitude' problems.

 

He might not have had a scooby as it was totally under wraps. Not like anyone else was reporting it.

Maybe the clubs were in talks with Doig, Young and Rose and the other two fell through.

He may well have known and the club asked him not to say. He is clearly briefed by them and I assume that him not saying certain things is a condition of that briefing.

 

Indeed, Rose wasn't even on our radar or being monitored yesterday. Worrying.

 

He has improved over the course of the season, not only because of it being the Championship. At 27 now he has also just reached his prime. I was desperate for us to replace Masina in the PL before we got relegated, but I think there's a chance things have clicked for him.

Given he didn't have a single minute of football last season that'd be an even bigger risk than sticking with Masina. If he starts as first-choice it should only be after they've both had some of pre-season to show what they can do; to make that call already seems nuts.

There was a photo in one of the twitter links above which made it appear as if he might have spent some of his time out on the Deeney diet as well. Though of course TD will give him all the tips he could need on how to get back in shape in time for the season.

 

Our players who improved in the championship can be attributed to being in the championship.

 

Incredibly underwhelming. Assume Young isn't coming for sure then ? Wages won't be cheap. Would much prefer Masina as LB than this guy, who was never much of a defender even at his "peak", just looked good going forward in an attacking Spurs side.

 

Seems like a decent signing to me. His attitude seems to come from not being picked which for me is a good thing. Only 30 so not that old and we need experience as well as youth. I didn't think Masina was that good last season and this is most definitely an upgrade. Hasn't played for a year but hopefully kept himself in shape and has two months or so to get ready. If this is a five year deal then clearly we've gone mad but a 2 year deal for an experienced Premier League footballer seems a great idea

Re-read what I said.

I pointed out that he improved over the course of the Championship season, i.e. it wasn't only the case that he immediately looked better because he was up against inferior opposition, but that he looked even better against the said inferior opposition at the end of the season than he did in his earlier games against them.

This is different to, say, Kiko, who immediately looked a level above relative to the opposition in his first game and basically stayed at the same respective level across the whole season.

As I've mentioned elsewhere, only Masina and Chalobah seemed to actually end the season playing much better than they started it.

 

Quite impressive that a thread about us signing someone took less than two pages to turn into a thread about people being angry at a young black man for spending his own money.

Decent signing btw. I know a lot of Spurs fans and they absolutely love him.

 

I'd include Sarr and Sierralta in that conversation.

 

Yeah I'm on the side of cautiously optimistic with us signing Rose. Has a lot of PL experience. Hopefully the contractual term will be short.
