Leventhal reporting that we have agreed a deal in principle. Anyone know if he’s any good still?

He's still amazing, that's why he's coming to us for nothing.

I was all for this a couple of seasons back but not now!

I thought this was the exact type of move Duxbury said we were getting away from? Anyone still believe a word he says?!?

You’d imagine this means there’s no chance Young is coming back and probably makes Doig like less likely too - unless Masina is off, which I guess is a possibility.

    Pretty crap signing.

A player long passed his best, hasn't played in a year, questionable attitude and turns 31 in a couple of weeks.

Would much rather we signed someone like Doig (who I assume won't be coming if we have Rose and Masina)

Well nobody can as he hasn't played for a season! On the one hand, I seem to remember he was alright for Newcastle the last time he played any kind of senior football, but didn't he turn us down one season? On the pitch, I guess it's a relatively low-risk deal, him and Masina tussling for the LB spot could get the best out of them, but is he the kind of character we want?

Crap signing and a player i've always disliked due to obvious poor attitude

Happy clappers will be pleased as they've heard of him and hes high rated on FIFA

I'm not #ITK or anything, but seeing as the Young move has always been mooted, I don't see how this impacts on the Doig deal? Surely he'd have had some idea that he'd be one of 3 players tussling for the LB spot

I don't mind moves for experienced pros in isolation, we did very well out of Behrami and Holebas when they came in 2015, but someone who hasn't played for a year and who has a reputation for being a difficult character? Yeah, I have my doubts about this one

This is a horrendous signing. He’s rubbish and old and will be on a tonne of money. As Burnsy says, Duxbury said just days ago they’d learned not to make these kinds of deals. Absolute b*******.

Probably means Young isn’t happening (who is older and also on a tonne of money but better and, crucially, offers set piece expertise that we desperately need) and Doig isn’t happening (who looks like a great prospect on much lower wages).

We're being very strict with wages so don't really think this is a bad idea at all seeing as Masina was a disaster last time he was in the Prem. Experience is important and this is a guy who has 31 England appearances and is only 30. Most of his lack of form was based on things out of his control off the pitch rather than physical deterioration and Xisco could certainly have him enjoying football again. Much better signing than Young.

Wouldn't surprise me if we sell Masina back to Italy and get Doig too.

What was the info you had when you said "Doig is also done"?

I'm probably clutching at straws but hoping we still sign him and loan him out.

But would Doig have come if we signed Young instead of Rose? Don't think it would've made a difference, imagine we would've loaned Doig out for a season or 2 if he were to sign which is why we were after Young (in competition with Masina) and Doig at the same time.

Yeah but he played for Spurs and was above average enough 5 years ago to play for England because he played for Spurs.

    Clever bit of business this

The claptrap Duxbury spouted was just a smokescreen, anything he said was just with a view to managing expectations not actual truth. He just wanted to get across that we won’t be spending much and we might get relegated again in what he thought was the most palatable way possible, truth was an irrelevance.

    I doubt we'd be spending £4m+ on a 3rd LB.

I suspect that the Young deal was attractive to a point because he's a very versatile player who can play a variety of positions - Rose is just a LB or LWB.

Honestly think Rose coming in would mean Doig is no longer happening - unless, as I say, Masina is off. Which would not surprise me one bit as he was a weakness last time around at PL level. If we can get decent money for him, I'd take it.

As for the difficult character bit - a lot of Spurs players have praised him recently after leaving so I think that side of him has always been a bit overstated. I think he had a year where he got a bit above his station saying he wanted to win things etc etc - but stands to reason if he was an England international and Spurs weren't winning. No one is battering Kane for the same opinion!

His attitude doesn't concern me one bit - the fact he hasn't played for a year does.

I mean I have my trepidations about Young as he's 36 and more of a wingback these days than an out and out winger or full-back, but a year out of football and with his supposed attitude problems, it's a bit of a red flag isn't it?

Goes against what Duxbury said about not signing older players on big contracts but if it's a short deal then I'm all for it. I doubt we'd be offering him anywhere near what he was on at Spurs either. Signing players thrown on the scrapheap by Spurs has worked for us so far!

  21. YellowKicks

Young would've been an awful signing given we play a 4-3-3! I think the attitude problems are drastically overblown and probably more to do with Mourinho than to do with Rose. Most who work at Spurs only have fantastic things to say about him.

Admittedly there's no history of murky business between us and Hibs, or us and Doig's agent (I presume!), but we're no strangers to buying young players as an investment rather than as a first choice starter

Tbf Duxbury did say we’d still sign 1/2 older players, just not on big contracts. Doig could still come in, just sent on a season long loan to someone

Doig to the Championship or Udinese would make sense if he came here, then next season whatever division we're in, he can start for us. How much would Rose be on? I don't suppose he'd come cheap when it comes to wages!

Admittedly I probably jumped the gun is going that far - but as has been pointed out over recent days by others, only passing the info along that I get told. And I was told we'd been allowed to speak to the player (after their cup final) and that barring any last minute snags, the deal would be completed. Fee agreed, and just its structure was left to sort.

I'm in no way saying the Doig deal is off. But I can only see it happening if Masina is off personally. I think thats far more likely than us still signing Doig for over £4m to just loan him out. Unless we leave him at Hibs for a year I guess.

Surprised how negative the reaction to this is. He was the best left back in the league a couple of years ago. Also Holebas was 31 when we signed him and had 'attitude problems' and he was one our best PL signings. I'd say Rose's ceiling is much higher than Holebas's.

So the comments about him spending more on a night out than the fine they get are fine are they?

Saying he can’t wait to get out of football, when he’s in a massively privileged position?

  33. Didn't realise he was only 30, thought he was way older

IF Xisco can get into his head this could turn into a smart bit of business

Length of deal and wages will be key. If it’s 2 years on a free then it’s worthwhile and probably as good as we will get. I thought Leventhal said we were going to bring in young players with a few older heads - so it was never all young players?

Was Holebas known for having an 'attitude problem' at Roma? I thought that reputation came about because of the rather murky way in which we signed him? He couldn't have been that much of a bad egg at Roma if he kept Ashley Cole out of the team, and the bloke always had that never say die attitude with us (even if he were a moody so and so at times!)
