[SIGNED perm] Ashley Fletcher

The five year contract is a particularly strange one. Surely we were far and away the best option on the table from his point of view - did we really need to entice him with such a long deal?

Would have made a bit of sense if it was Assombalonga as he's at least home-grown and has a very decent goalscoring record.

The more I think about it, the more I think he's been signed for Udinese or to be loaned elsewhere. An a backup player in case we go down. He's unlikely to be in and around Watford's first team next season.

On a different note, we know Gray isn't going to get any better. He is what he is, a dreadful finisher that frustrates everyone because he gets into promising positions and misses sitters.

His expected goals this season was the highest in the league!! So that tells you how bad his finishing is.

 

Deeney knows everyone in football though, so not much of a revelation.

I have no doubt that Fletcher will do just as well if not better .

Then again Fletcher's a cracking little player, can't wait to see him unleashed in the Prem - don't forget that in different situations, different players in different positions at different points in their career have very occasionally been brought in by the Pozzo and been somewhat more successful than they were first expected to be for a while, so you'd have to be a hysterical lunatic to react to this signing based on the actual context of it, or all historical evidence of the player themselves and their career to date. There are gonna be some old duffers laffin' their arses off at you here when he's banging them in like the little cracker he is; mark my words.

Surprising, and largely underwhelming signing. Have to hope there's more to come, and this is with a view to getting Gray/Deeney out the door ASAP.

Would be a terrible signing if he wasnt free. He's a punt. If he does not work out I doubt he's on huge money and can be shifted if so.

You’re also completely ignoring the fact that Warnock loves a striker (it’s been a football joke for years) and has had plenty of prolific and successful ones work under him over the years.

Never ******* heard of him, but he looks ace from this, and can get on the end of corners which is something we've been crying out for.

I'm going to reserve judgement until he puts on a Watford shirt. Some of the reactions on here are funny, he's 25 and on a free transfer, fairly low risk for me. If he shows a smidgeon of hunger, he'll be better than Deeney and Gray put together.

 

This is a heads gone signing. Not good enough to start for Boro last year, and a questionable attitude- anyone who agrees to sign and then rows back that on a verbal agreement isn’t someone we want. If he was average and 19 then it would be more understandable, but at 25 this fella isn’t getting any better.

 

Why would a player and more specifically, their agent, agree to compromise the 5 best earning years of his life, by spreading 3 years worth of wages out over them?

I can see the argument for 32 year olds, but not someone who is 25.

After some thought I'm giving Giaretta the benefit of the doubt on this one... provided we see a quality 9 arrive this summer

Fletcher (imo) is better than Perica and will contribute more than Success ever has
Fletcher will at least fit a 433 in a way that Gray never will
We all questioned it but Giaretta got the January window right
If he turns out to be **** Gino will just loan him to the Somewhere-Istan league
