Anyone Here Ever Snapped A Tendon?

    I have. Don't know how.

Do a thumbs up. See that big tendon that stands up on the back of your hand? That one. Snapped it clean. Thumb no longer works.

I have to have an operation and while I'm waiting for that, I'm at home on no sick pay and SSP only.

Anyway, they say they might have to take another tendon from another finger to replace the broken one. It doesn't sound a nice operation. Has anyone had anything similar?

That's awful Clive, I wish you all the best.

I was going to give you the "thumbs up" emoji, but thought it may be in bad taste.

How the blazes did you snap that one?

Really sorry to hear that, Clive. Sounds utterly crap.

Ouch. Hope you get sorted out soon. The whole tendon replacement thing probably sounds much worse than it is. It's amazing what they can do these days.

Yep, that was the start of it. I got pushed over from behind while trying to shepherd the ball out and put my hand out when I fell. It never really got properly better and I think I finished it off when I was showering a bloke and went to put the shower head back in the holder.

I could understand you snapping a tendon in your middle finger but not the thumbs up.
Hope it’s not too painful and is fixed soon.

Best wishes Clive. I snapped the tendons attaching my knee to the tibia when I broke and dislocated knee. It was a long road back. Bit of physio and I reckon you'll be fine

Can't you loop an elastic band round your thumb and wrist instead?

Ouch. My dad had to have his knee caps removed after a series of football injuries, such were the advanced surgery options available in the 50's and 60's.

The plus side was that he won the "Knobbly Knees Contest" at Butlins several years in a row.

Id recommend not snapping tendons. Did you physically hear it snap? They can be surprisingly noisey

No, they asked me if I felt it pop, but not really. When I was doing the showering I mentioned, I put the shower head back in the socket and it gave me such a belt of pain up my wrist and arm, I had to turn around and hug myself while doing little jumps up and down. As I say, I think that was the moment it went.

They say that if the tendon gets ripped away from the wall it's supposed to be attached to, then you can lose blood supply to the tendon and it gradually dies off until it eventually snaps.

Surely we must have some sports science students on here can tell me more about this?

I tore my hamstring once, the pop was very audible, and the pain excruciating. Was playing Rounders at the time and everyone just laughed :D

Operation due on Friday. It sounds like almost certainly it will be a case of taking a tendon from my index finger and grafting it in. They say the broken one will be like a rope that gets frayed, so that explains how it went bit by bit from the original football injury.

I then didn't rest it for enough time to let it recover and heal properly and was harried back into work and off the sick. Then I properly did it in. It "pinged apart" the doctor said. Me, of all people, allowed myself to be brow beaten by some stupid fly by night boss. Let that be a lesson and an example. Now I will be disfigured for life. Good job it's my left hand I suppose.

Still. Great news for @zztop and the boys at the chamber of commerce. My ability to point an accusing finger at the bosses will be permanently reduced by 50%.

Mate of mine snapped his banjo string while getting ridden by a girl he met in adelaides in St Albans.

It's a truly chiling tale and not appropriate for this innocent forum.

Snapped my right achilles playing football 22 years ago....I knew it hurt, but didn’t realise I’d snapped it, but knew I’d need intensive physio at least. At that time, my company’s private health care provider would only open a claim if you’d been referred by your GP, and as I’d done it on a Sunday, I couldn’t get an appointment until the Tuesday, so drove from Northampton to Essex and back for work. It was sore. The GP sent me to physio, who after about 5 minutes said he was certain it was a complete rupture and sent me back to the GP, who sent me to a specialist to confirm the diagnosis.
I was in hospital within 2 hours but he couldn’t operate for 2 days as there was too much swelling and congealed blood.

And about 5 months later it went again under rehab, and that was more painful than the first time!

When I asked why it had snapped, the specialist just shrugged and said ‘well, they’re only a sort of elastic band.’

I did the same thing about 17 years ago playing astro turf football with mates. Exactly the same sensation in not realising that I had snapped it, but very painful. Had the operation and was in a cast for 3/4 months, whilst my wife was pregnant with our fourth and last child. I didn't get much sympathy. Really bad luck for you to snap it again. I, thankfully, did not have that do deal with that, but my football playing days had come to an end.

I was 42 when I did it and didn't play again for 2 seasons, but then got talked into signing up for a mate's club playing in the local Veterans' League. I didn't realise the qualifying age was 35, so there I was playing against some players who were younger than in the 'normal' league I'd been playing in when I snapped it! It was a strange mix of 35/36 year olds who were still quite speedy and hared around everywhere & some 'old heads' who'd obviously played at a high standard. They didn't do much running, but could kill a pass to them stone dead & you had the devil's own job getting it back off them before they hit a 25-yarder into the top corner. Had an enjoyable couple of years before doing serious damage to my hamstring, so packed in then. The residual effect of the achilles injuries had forced me to over-compensate onto the other leg, weakening it too much.
