I just can't understand British people and animals. Why are animals worth so much more than humans? Here are some recent news stories:

A missing dog has been found after 5 months living wild. The poor thing has ensured "storms, freezing temperatures and heavy rain". Awwwwww! But now, it's celebrations! It was "lured into a humane trap" using chicken broth after having been spotted by the lost dog drone search and rescue service.

But you can relax now, although the poor dear animal was reportedly "a little bit tatty" he is now recovering from his terrible ordeal in some centre or other. He has mostly been "crashed out sleeping and relaxing, knowing he's safe". Thank god!

Next another animal outrage. Someone left a guinea pig in a comfortable special cage at a London tube station with a 'please adopt me' note. Something the RSPCA has described as "incredibly cruel". Awwww poor thing! “A guinea pig can develop abnormal behaviour and may suffer if they are left without company of other guinea pigs,” they explained. Imagine the terrible cruelty! Abnormal behaviour! Suffering! Poor rodent!

Still it's lucky @Otter 's compañeros didn't find it or it would have been flame grilled on a skewer for lunch.

Meanwhile, in other news a brief note in the independent observes in passing:

"A second man believed to be homeless has died after parts of the UK were gripped by freezing temperatures over the weekend.

Police were called to Bloom Street in Manchester city centre on Sunday morning over concerns about the welfare of a man found in a shop doorway.

Officers and paramedics attended but he was declared dead at the scene, Greater Manchester Police said in a statement.

On Friday another man, also thought to be homeless, died in Beeston, Nottinghamshire. Police were called to Dallas York Road at around 10:30am following reports that a man died suddenly."

There was no space to give the names of these two humble humans who died from storms, freezing temperatures and rain, nor to note whether they were tatty or not.

Nobody gave them any chicken broth or took them to any warm centre. Nobody worried if lack of company affected their mental state at all. Presumably the lost person search and rescue drone failed to spot them. Nobody seemed to think it was incredibly cruel.

There wasn't even any space to give the two gentlemen the dignity of a name. But the dog was called Costa and the guinea pig was called Disco pig. Awwwwwww! So glad they're safe and warm.

I don't understand either. The RSPCA (£152m) has double the income of Shelter (£73m) and the Donkey Sanctuary (£57m) has double the income of The Samaritans (£23m).

Possibly the reason is that a human being can look after themselves , usually.
Whereas an animal not necessarily so .

Makes you wonder how they ever survived before we domesticated them.

I presume it's because humans are complete c unts.

    Whereas animals are cute.

Think about films what films make you cry:

    1. Films where the animal carks it (or nearly does)
    2. Films where the robot carks it, or nearly does (eg short circuit, batteries not included, the iron giant etc)

    3. Films where humans cark it.

The 5 month lost dog seemed to be doing ok, but admittedly I'm not sure how long Disco Pig would have lasted down the Jubilee line tunnels..

I've walked the Jubilee line, it's not in the same league as the Central line down near Shepherds Bush.

I don't think being kind to animals and caring for the homeless are mutually exclusive. I can't understand why anyone would be cruel to a pet or why anyone has to be homeless

In those two stories, people were being incredibly kind to those animals. Too kind. Over kind. Chicken broth! Hamster loneliness! Fa fack's sake!

My point was not about don't be kind to animals, it was more about the complete contrast society has between an animal and a lowly human being. Honestly those two men would have been way better off to be a dog or a hamster it seems.

My guess is that there's a perception, probably wrongly, that a homeless human has at least some control over their situation and ability to seek help whereas an abandoned cute pet was helpless and its predicament is entirely down to its human captors.

People can be a bit soppy about animals, I agree. And the lack of empathy with the homeless is something I just don't get. The view that homeless people have, in all probability brought their misfortune upon themselves, is utter cr@p. The reality is there but for the grace of god go most of us. Homelessness can happen to anyone - all it takes is a run of bad luck or a couple of silly mistakes and even the most secure can find themselves without a roof over their heads - which in a country where a football club is prepared to pay 100 million for the services of Jack Grealish is so f***ed up it makes my head hurt just thinking about it!

I agree, although I’m not sure how legit some of the “homeless” sitting outside the M&S in Guildford with their “hungry and homeless” signs are. I bought some sandwiches and a bottle of water and offered them to one of these men. He turned me down, saying he already had plenty of food in his bag and could I give him cash instead?!

Recently when I told a homeless person that I was sorry, but I didn't have any spare change, he whipped out some kind of credit card scanning device and said 'that's Ok, I take plastic'.

My 17 yr old daughter was at Waterloo station on her own last night waiting for the 10.05pm train home. She was approached by three different men, all asking for cash. When she explained she didn't have any, one of them wouldn’t take no for an answer and demanded she went and got cash out from the cash point. She then had to explain that she doesn’t carry a card - uses her phone for everything. Unfortunately, she hasn’t been going in and out of London on her own for very long so doesn’t always know when to engage with someone or not.

People project human sensibility onto animals all the time. A dog observing normal pack behaviour must actually love us. They are loyal and kind etc. Rather than them simply behaving according to a mix of instinct and training instilled through repetition.

Animals are food, leather and labour for developing farmers. They can be companions too. I have rabbits, and I treat them well - make sure they are warm, have good areas for exercise and heathy food, but if there's an apocalypse, I'm force feeding and eating their fluffy little faces. Actually I couldn't. Dammit I'm as bad as the rest of you.
