A lot of premier league teams lost preseason games to teams in League 2 and below. It's not like we're alone in occasionally not performing against lower level sides.

The important thing is that we played poorly and still won.

Exactly Hull and Wolves needed penalties vs lower league opposition.

I don't think it was as bad as some are making out, no. Please enlighten me on how it warrants a prediction of a miserable season of struggle and I'll be happy to reply with my in-depth thoughts on the game.

I am not interested in Hull and Wolves it was our performance that depressed me.

Very rarely do we play well in the first round of this competition for some reason. Remember we went out this time last year and our best season for a while so please don't read too much in to this.

The morons who booed on Saturday were probably the same morons who booed during Rodger's first game and most likely booed Boothroyd towards the end of his time when the football was atrocious, you can't have it both ways! All it needs is patience but some people are quite simply clueless and can't work out with their two brain cells that a new style of play, with a new manager and some new players, takes more than a month and a handful of friendlies to implement.

As if people are already booing. I'd like to give them a good slap and tell them to belt up... ignorant bas****s.

Is this for real? Please tell me no Watford fans were booing the first game? If so this is an all time low with our ridiculously fickle support.

It was very much a minority but it didn't surprise me when I heard a few boos. Unfortunately Watford seems to have acquired a certain type of fan since our last Premiership season, one which wants success immediately and isn't prepared to give players or management a chance! At least Dyche rammed it back down their throats last season.

OK our defenders were slow playing the ball out, our midfield was lightweight, our tactics? we went forward, then sideways then backwards then sideways then lost it, we regained the ball and once again played sideways, backwards, sideways, sideways again, switched to the other side, played it backwards again....but at no point did we actually look like putting the ball in their box and threatening their goal.
Fortunately the League 2 strikers were almost as bad as our striker so our goal wasn't really at threat though they did have the better attempts in the 90 mins.
The most frustrating thing was that anyone with half a brain could see that Garner was ineffectual we could also see big Chris warming up so what happens? we replace first ****inson (Forsyth) and the Doyley (Hodson).
If Chris had come on before we went into extra time it may just have been avoided.

For those dismissing this as a pre season game..it wasn't it was a cup competition and for those saying nobody is interested until the latter rounds, well you need to get through the earlier rounds to hold that interest. I was also there when we lost to Notts County and the difference being Notts County actually played their arses off that night and deserved to win, Wycombe were a poor side that we struggled to overcome by what was actually a fluke goal that bounced off Chris's shins.
I was really excited about this upcoming season, but if this is the standard of football we can expect, then we are going to be on the wrong end of a lot of bad results.
I really, really hope I'm proved wrong but I saw nothing on Saturday that gave me any confidence in that team.

And for the record I'm usually a glass half full kind of guy so you work out how bad the game must have been to make me such a glass half empty type.

I'd just like to remind you how we started playing under Brendan Rodgers. People didn't enjoy the early days - but once it clicked, we were a very decent side for most of the second half of the season.

We're currently in Zola's early days - be patient. As others have said, don't expect a flying start - we didn't have one last season, yet we were still in competition for a playoff place with 4 games to go under Dyche.

Yeah he went with a flat back 10, he practiced his tactics with Watford, got sacked by Reading, got lucky at Swansea, and I really hope he crashes and burns at Liverpool.

He inherited a team which was already on the verge of being something special and just got it past the finish line. I think it's fair to say that he got lucky getting the Swansea job despite failing at Reading because, if he hadn't, I don't think he would have been able to successfully rebuild a team (look at us/Reading). By getting Swansea promoted, largely through the work of his predecessors, he got the credit for the what was in a huge part the work of others and by that, yes, I think he got lucky. Liverpool is the real test for him - if he does well, he can prove he's a good manager and needed the right team to start off with (Swansea). If he doesn't, I don't think there can be many arguments that he was just fortunate to land the Swansea job.

I really think he'll regret taking the Liverpool job - should've carried on building at Swansea, or even just stabilising, before he could move on to Arsenal when Wenger retires, which would be a similar situation to when he took over at Swansea.

  32. Arakel

    Arakel First Team

The fact that he kept Swansea up playing possession football highlights he isn't a bad manager.

I think the 'pool job is perhaps too much too soon, but like him or hate him, the man is a decent manager.

With a squad built mostly by Martinez and Sousa, with the tactics these players had been playing with since Martinez and Sousa. I'm not, in any way, suggesting he's a bad manager, I'm just saying he had it laid on a plate for him and in that respect was quite lucky. I don't think he'd be able to get a team like us to the Premier League playing Swansea's style of football.

This is the litmus test. These fancy pants Jonny Foreigners are alright when the sun is shining, but a humid Monday evening in Bedfordshire and they curl up like turds.
