CARLISLE United and Watford are close to an agreement over Tom Aldred’s move to Vicarage Road as manager Greg Abbott revealed he is searching for a replacement for the young defender.

A compensation package is on the brink of being settled by the two clubs, allaying fears that the matter would have to be resolved by a tribunal.

A Football League panel had to set the fee for Danny Graham’s move from Brunton Park to the Hornets last summer but a more amicable solution is close over 19-year-old Aldred.

United boss Abbott said: “I think we are more or less there with an agreement.

“We wish Tom well and we move on with what we have got left.”

The package is likely to be linked to the number of appearances Aldred makes for his new club, with a sell-on clause also expected to be written into his contract.
