I don't see it that way TBH mate. I questioned the signing of Iwelumo at the time, but was hoping to be proved wrong. His track record was average at best in the Championship and his legs were going. Burnley were desperate to off-load him, as he had 2 years left to run on his contract, and they knew he was in decline as a player. He's never scored many goals, and if you look at his record for Burnley last season he scored just 11, of which included a freak late hattrick against Preston and two goals against us!!. I think he's proved to be even worse than anyone would have expected though and I dont blame Dyche in signing him, as he was probably the best, on paper, of what was available at the time. He's turned out the be a real noose around Dyche's neck though, as he is the club's top earner.
If we lose Mariappa then we need to reinvest, but in the strikeforce, not on defenders. If we don't we will get relegated. FML.
I think 11 was a pretty good return from him last season! 11 goals on top of Rodriguez's goals turned out quite nicely for Burnley.
http://www.watfordobserver.co.uk/sport/9487855.Watford_rebuff_Newcastle_bid/ Newcastle United's initial bid for Adrian Mariappa was rebuffed by the Hornets as it was well short of their valuation for the player, the Watford Observer understands. The Magpies enquired about the centre back but we understand their first offer was not even considered by Watford as it was substantially less than what would be required to take Mariappa away from Vicarage Road. The 25-year-old, who has made 244 appearances for Watford since graduating from the club's academy, has 18 months left on his contract.
Yes, 11 was good, but I think that total was artificially high, meaning it was unlikely to be repeated this season. I watched the hattrick match on TV and he scored 2 in the last minute to beat Preston 4-3. It was a freak result and situation which happens every now and then. Two of his other goals were actually against us, and my nan could have scored against our defence last year. Going by that, I would expect him to score around 7 goals this season, which was never going to be good enough anyway. His stats so far show 22 appearances, 1 goal and no assists, which has been very disappointing indeed. On paper I can understand why he was signed, but unfortunately the gamble didn't pay off.
Second bid received? Hopefully just bad wording from the wobby! Pardew won't want to pay too much for a backup so keep the rejections coming!
Can you PM me your source mate? I know you can't say on here because all the plebs will ruin the deal.
What I think is more relevant is that most of the 11 goals were scored in the first part of the season. His performances over the second half were disappointing. We signed a 31 year old..clearly on his last legs..who'd managed 1 goal every 4 games at his previous club. Not good enough.
http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/newc...rst-offer-for-adrian-mariappa-72703-30184690/ "WATFORD have turned down Newcastle United's initial offer for Adrian Mariappa. The Magpies are believed to have bid in the region of £2million for the 25-year-old. However, the Herfordshire outfit are holding out for more, and have placed a much higher valuation on the centre-back." Good.
If Mariappa goes and Dyche does get a fair chunk of the money to spend, how confident would you be that it would be invested wisely? So far he's shafted around 750k on the likes of Iwelumo, ****inson, Yeates and Garner.
£2m and we turned it down? For Mariappa? Either Watford are bluffing and have grown a big pair of balls, or someone's on drugs. £2m for a player who's error prone and is an average Championship defender would be a steal for us.
To be fair he's also signed Hogg, Prince and Nosworthy - all doing well. Yeates and ****inson aren't all that bad really either. We've signed a lot worse for a lot more in the past.
£3,000,000 would constitute good business. He's been excellent for us over the last two seasons, and he's definitely one of if not the best defender outside the Premiership. The errors in our defence usually come down to the inability of our keeper to communicate or take the pressure off the defence by coming for crosses! If Mariappa goes this window, then SD needs half of that to re-invest.
To be fair, I think that whilst ****inson, Yeates and Garner are not exceptional, the fees paid probably reflect their actual ability. Every manager will get some purchases wrong, although Dyche did make a massive blunder with Emu particularly as we are lumbered with him for another year.
I will say we will get about 2.75 mill and he will be gone. As for the errors in defence, though Loach is to blame for the majority, Mariappa always seem to be there or thereabouts as well. I also think the Bennett and Thompson should be given the season as replacements with Taylor not being fit. No point us splashing the cash and then getting relegated and both have proved that they can play in the Championship previously.
There are some players that even teams like little old watford shouldn't sell unless for big big money, for us, that's mapps. £4-5mil or no deal!
He still brings him on to no affect every week! I'm not sure Dyche has given up yet but every fan can see he has nothing to offer
This reminds me of the famous quote "Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result." Albert Einstein
Looks like we have turned down a £3m bid for Mapps, but I think that's unlikely TBH. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/fo...Alan-Pardew-fails-3m-bid-Adrian-Mariappa.html
I think Mariappa is not worth £3 million as a player, but he is worth a lot more to us as our stand in captain and consistent performer. He does make mistakes, but nobody is perfect. I don't think Watford should sell him as without him I think we will suffer. Same for Sordell, lose our main goalscorer and we will have no defence and no goal threat. Every1 has their price, so if Watford do sell we need to re-invest in players of the same calibre and not development players or journeymen.
I agree, if that is true then they really are playing hard ball, but I heard they had dismissed the offer "out of hand" and didn't even discuss it as it was well below the club's valuation. It never got to board level, so that's why I think the offer was much lower than £3m.
Why should that be so? Mariappa is possibly our best player, and therefore is worth a lot more than £3m to us, so what would be the point of selling him for that amount!!! To make it worth while selling him we would need to get enough money for us to purchase a decent replacement for him and at least one other decent player, preferably a left winger or striker.
I am not saying the club wouldn't refuse £3 for Mapps, but if £3m had been received as the first offer, then no way would the club dismiss it out of hand without even referring it to the board, because it's hardly derisory. This is why I think the offer had to be much lower.
When it comes to refusing or accepting offers , i think the board would get involved at all levels , if it isnt the board refusing it , who is ,the receptionist ?
Each player has a valuation and it will be someone like the club secretary who will look at an offer in the first instance. If the offer is well below the club's valuation for that particular player then it will be refused. If it is within say 20% of the club's valuation, then it will be presented to the board. I'm pretty sure that's how Watford are operating, from what I've heard in the past. They now have a structured system and it's the team that is just below the board level that filter out transfer offers and either pass on or refuse. This is why I'm thinking the offer must have been well below the £3m that has been quoted.
