I was 17 and wore the lucky clobber I had worn to every round of the cup - trainers, drainpipe jeans and huge jumper favoured by the likes of U2 and Big Country.

It was so hot, I left the jumper in the Flag - and that is why we lost!

Me and my old man were most probably the only fans let in for free that day. His good mate was the head of turnstile security then and we were quietly let in through a side gate just before the turnstiles opened. What a feeling it was getting smuggled in. We made our way stright up to the front row of the upper tier behind the goal. I was 13 then and we went to quite many England games in the same way through a side gate. Happy days.

One of my main memories was seeing Luther down on the pitch in his suit before the game and everyone chanting his name. Such a shame he was with AC Milan that season.

I take your point but I'm afraid you'll never change my mind about Gray!

The fact that he has since proved what an odious little **** he really is makes it easier to dislike him!

The cap thing seems like a bit of bad luck but then looking at mine, which I still have somewhere, I think you got a lucky escape!

Not something I would contemplate ever wearing these days!

Saw Luther at the Open Day last year and we both agreed we may well have won in 84 if he'd been playing.

Wow, it's all coming back. I'm yet another who was in the last year of an apprenticeship, how odd! I remember the build up to the game itself through the week was so much better than the actual match, in which the 2nd half was a non event. Queuing for tickets for hours was great fun back then when you knew it was for a cup final, remember seeing Luther and the chants, played football with some Everton fans before the game outside Wembley. Remember the rivers of p*** running out of the toilets, the smell of smoking and burgers, being rammed onto a terrace and the noise, which was incredible.

Apart from what sdc says above about Luther, I also feel that if Wilf Rostron had played it would have been a different game.

Yes true.. Mr.Gray has many things other than that goal to dislike about him!

The cap.. I see someone is selling one at the moment.. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Watford-F...a_Football_Memorabilia_ET&hash=item4180f23623 and looking at that i cant believe i ever wore one. In 1984 i was a Pringle jumper & Farrah slack wearing casual.. what was i thinking wearing that on my head! Would have still made a nice momento though.
PS What was the name for those caps?

I know :dismay: Guess i just got carried away with the occasion.
