I think it can work, as it does for many other clubs. This is a new formation in a new league, so everyone's adapting. I just hope Quique perhaps uses the international break to look at tactics and analyses the previous performances to try and get the best out of the squad.

Yeah we would and the tactics he has used for all the proceeding games is probably the right one here, I dont think many would disagree.
What do we do when City score though? Keep going and defend our 1-0 defeat?

Ill be interested to see how he adapts. It works in some situations, not all

If we do play one up front then the onus is on the AM or number 10 to at least take pot shots at the goal, from any knock down. They just want to play 'RayWilkins' side passes. Jurado for one is a culprit for this. Cuts inside from the wing qnd passes it. Try shooting or at least go through Into the box and have a pop.

I wish they'd all stop ******* about with it and have a shot!!

That takes time, you're essentially building a team from scratch. And if there's one thing you don't get in football it's time.

The lack of fluidity from the three behind Deeney is the issue. This is the same system Flores used at Getafe, Valencia and to a lesser extent Athleti. It's just a few teething problems, not an issue of personnel. Unfortunately Vydra or Forestieri would be instructed to do the same things if they we're playing.

Once the three start ticking things will look drastically different. It's a slower possession game, one which we would have seen last year under Garcia. Our players will adapt. We have been undoubtably more solid this season, the first thing to get right when building a new system. It will come. I'm sure we will also see a 4-4-2 in the coming weeks.

We'll obviously be culling the square pegs, but the plethora of midfielders that we've signed have presumably been bought because they CAN play in this formation. Yet they're crap, so far at least.

I am always surprised (I shouldn't be) by how negative people get so early on. It's obvious that the team has been focused on defense first and foremost; look at the defensive players brought in quite early on (Pr*dl, Capoue, Behrami, Holebas, Nyom). Berghuis, Diamanti and Jurado all came in later and 2/3 are definitely not fully match fit. Given that most people pegged us to crumble with the new players, we have in all fairness, exceeded expectations.

Attacking cohesion will come in time, just like defense did. In my opinion though, Ighalo is not right to play in the center of the attacking three, particularly at home. While he is strong and agile he offers no creative threat, many times Jurado would be in a wide position and feed the ball into the center only for it to be rolled back to the DM's and recycled back to a wide player. Ideally we would have a creative player (Jurado) in the center that can exploit the space between the center back and full back caused by the wide players.

Had Capoue or Ighalo put away their chances against Southampton people would have an entirely different view, the formation has been fine it just needs fine-tuning and more time to improve.

Start with Deeney as the lone striker, then if we need a goal replace him with Ighalo for 15 to 20 mins, and also bring on Vydra if a goal is still needed in the last 10 to 15mins.

It's hilarious. I don't know how some have the gall to - after previously being knee-jerk & embarrassing themselves - criticise & overreact.

  25. People need to get real, in the championship you are up against flawed opposition and you have lots of chances to win games. In the prem you are up against quality opposition and you might only get 1 or 2 chances. On Saturday we created 2 really good opportunities and had either gone in no one would be moaning. I really don't think we are far off.

You say that; but 3 games in I haven't been overly impressed with the standard. Could've beaten Everton having led with 5 to go and then both WBA and Southampton were there for the taking! So many people on here are over awed by the teams we're playing but in reality they've looked no better than any of the top championship teams on a good day.

We're creating as many chances as we're giving away, against teams whose level we're aspiring towards.

  28. That was also my first reaction but having watched both home games in full back on HP with an open mind I see how good defensively the opposition are. We are used to seeing Deeney dominate championship centre backs but he is now up against guys as quick and as strong and very well organized, Fonte blocked/stopped Deeney pulling the trigger twice that last season would have ended up in the back of the net.

I was happy with the 2 draws in the first 2 games. But after the Southampton not so. The lack of willingness by QSF to change the system after it was clear not enough goalscoring attacks were happening left me the most frustrated.
If he played 2 up top in the last 20 and we still hadn't scored fair enuff at least he tried. But to be honest no shots on target at home isn't on.

  30. Like I say having watched the game on HP with an open mind I've changed my opinion, we had 2 clear chances where all the ball had to do was hit any part of Ighalo and Capoue to go in, plus 5 or 6 half chances including 2 blocks by Fonte as TD was about to pull the trigger in the 2nd half. On another day with the rub of the green we could have won by several goals.

  31. You say that, but you completely miss the significance.

We made made three established Premier League teams look no better than the teams we played in the Championship. All three teams were decent, and we ended up on equal pegging on each occasion. The one team who weren't playing to hold out against us, we scored two goals against, at their place.

We need to score goals, certainly. But please don't suggest that Everton, West Brom and Southampton are of a Championship standard. We have done very, very well to maintain an unbeaten run to date in the BPL, and for some reason, as the pundits and nebobs that follow this league are starting to change their mind about our survival chances (because they have actually seen us play now), some of our own fans are changing their minds the opposite way.

I understand pessimism, but I find denial of what is in front of us quite incredible.

People will be saying we don't play the ball long soon! :naughty:

And yet, if we did go two up front, you would be first in line to criticise if we went on to lose 1-0.

I wouldn't criticize because we tried to change it. Thats my point.

The speed of centre backs in the PL compared to the Champ is a big difference. Fonte is a huge unit yet over the distance of 15 yards he closed Deeney down to get the blocks in.

I think it's more of a case of us looking up to their standard, we have quality in our team even if it's not fully flowing in the attacking sense just yet. This is one of the hardest working Watford teams we've seen without the ball and we're still waiting for the rest to click. You build a team from the back. And that is what we are doing, building a team.
