1 up front doesn't work.

There seems to be a lot of people that are used to hoofball round here. I could be wrong.
The formation is new to the players, they will get used to it. I would imagine some tinkering is needed.
For me Jurado would be better where Ighalo is playing now as he is the 1 player that could actually play through balls.
In this formation our transition from Def to attack has to be quicker that means playing quick wide players.
And dare I say it maybe Ighalo would be suited better as the lone forward?
Everyone should relax a little so far it hasn't been that bad.

Not really. It's a thread in the section for Watford-related things on a Watford forum. I would've thought it would've been pretty obvious that it related to reservations about our current formation rather than a general critique of other teams playing one up front! The first post made it pretty clear that it was related to our current attacking issues too.

No actually there is a big distinction between:

    A) 1 up front doesn't work; and

    B) 1 up front didn't work yesterday, because Deeney isn't used to it yet.

It's not just Deeney who's struggling with the system. IMO, the players in the three behind him haven't been entirely with it either. Maybe that's got something to do with the fact that Layun, Anya, and Ighalo, aren't really suited to playing in such a role, and others have been deployed in the wrong place such as Jurado on the left, and Diamanti wide on the left.

Personally, I think Vydra and Forestieri would have torn Southampton a new arse hole if they had played either side of a centrally positioned Diamanti yesterday, and Deeney would have found himself with both support and chances. I think we can afford to be a lot more bold with Capoue and Berhami sitting in front of the back four.

    C) don't play a second center forward in the creative midfield role when you have 2 on the wings and 1 on the bench already.

What Jellyman said, there's a very big difference between the two, i.e misleading.

Sparked some debate though didn't it? 4 pages and counting.:mengoal:

To be fair there's not enough space to put the whole of the first post as the thread title but I'll make sure I'm more precise in future.

I would even suggest playing a 4-1-3-2, Deeney needs support there is no questioning his ability but he is going to look average against defenders in the Premier league who are alot better than the defenders in the championship. The only player i believe who suits into the midfield three at the moment is Jurado. Deeney is a strong centre forward but you can see he is getting frustrated already as he has to work harder than he did in the previous season

That's in the 5% of occasions where he beats his first man. Come on, everyone knows when anya gets the ball on almost every occasion instead of beating the defender and crossing he stops, either turns sideways or hesitates and hits the first man with the cross. People still are saying he "played well got in good positions but needs to work on his final ball" he is not good enough. I wish he was but he isn't.

    Goals win games.
You can't expect to 0-0 your way to safety.
Sure, be defensively solid and look to break against strong opposition (worked well at Goodison) but after the two home games and tonight's match against championship oppo without making a single clear-cut chance (bar Capoue's header from 5 yards) it's obvious to me that this system does not suit our attacking players.

The point is, most of our players are **** at crossing. The last decent crosser of the ball I remember us having was Cassetti and we moved him to central defence.

Cassetti was the best crosser I can remember us having full stop. Although also a Rolls Royce central defender (except at Wembley).

Abdi would be but he isn't a winger so won't get the opportunity too. Think diamanti will be a good crosser there were glimpses of it on Saturday. We still need to bring in a couple of pacey wingers who can cross imo

It's the right formation but with the wrong players

Deeney isn't a back to goal striker, his much more effective moving on to the ball. Inghalo is a poacher and not a creator. Both players have been use to playing a 352 over the last 3 years, a style that suited them.

Getting lots of crosses in isn't the answer either, neither are particularly strong in the air and even less so against 6'4" / 6'5" centerbacks. If we are going to have wingers they need to be very very pacey and pull the ball back on to on coming players.

The player behind the striker needs to be able to link the transitions of play, be a play maker with quick accurate passing. if they give the ball away then we are immediately on the defensive again. At the moment we have no link between defensive midfield and attacking midfield.

I don't think its the system, but the players we have aren't suited to that system

Personally, I just don't want this system. Maybe it would work with other players, who knows? Who cares?

Two up front please, it is what our forwards are used to, and been very successful at - and looking at the players we have brought in, those are the forwards QSF is relying on.

In my view, we have a strong enough defence and supporting midfielders to get the wins we need if we play Deeney, Ighalo and Vydra to their strengths.

    But it won't happen.

Three games in with a new head coach, new system and new players - we always knew it was going to take a while to gel but if this is us 'struggling' then there's no real cause for concern, give it 5 or 6 games and the results and goals will come.

Let's hope the more moronic members of our supporters aren't booing the players off after the Swansea game .

  27. hornmeister

Agreed. Results are not a concern. It's the lack of shots on target with little indication of it improving that is worrying and we've not played any big boys yet.

I think the system can work but the problem I saw against Saints was that we just weren't getting in behind them. We were standing crosses up from the edge of the penalty area which is bloody hard to score from. For this formation to work we need to be getting behind their backline and cutting crosses back in low or high across the face of the box. The one time we managed it Ighalo missed a sitter. However with Jurado/Diamanti/Layun playing in the wide areas of the 3 I struggle to see that happening much because they are relatively slow. I'd like to see it with Anya/Berghuis/Vydra and see if that gives us a bit more in behind, then Deeney will score.

Hopefully it'll come with time. If it doesnt then QSF gets the chop and whoever we bring in will go with 2 up top, so for god sake Watford don't sell Vydra.

  29. GoingDown

    GoingDown "The Stability"

Indeed, better make it 7 or 8 games in case we aren't ready by the Swansea one.

Incidentally, do we count the pre season games where he played this formation? As we might need to push the number out further.

Then you play a system that suits the players you do have, or at least be flexible enough to change things around if necessary. It's not rocket science. You don't achieve anything putting square pegs in round holes.

But surely if we dont have the players for the system then its the system that is at fault?
If we were playing Christmas tree formation it wouldnt suit the players but we'd want to change the system - why so wedded to the 4231? Just becuase lots of other teams use it?
So do we wait for players to adapt, which they might not and will take time or change the system which is instant?

This aint going to gel, there arent many games in the premiership. We need to make changes to the system now or it will be too late.

Its all very well waiting and being patient and looking at obscure stats about completed crosses and patting ourselves on the back. If we dont create chances we wont score if we dont score we can only draw or lose and then we are going down with a boring frustrating season in front of us.

Plus we have to watch our rivals Muff score goals

Or conversely, you stick with the system and get rid of the players that can't adapt, i.e. the square pegs.

Personally, I prefer the two up front system when you pair a strong physical player with a fast clinical finisher.

Jesus Man U, Liverpool, Arsenal, Villa, Newcastle, Southampton, WBA have only scored twice. Two of those are in the top 6.
QSF is currently unbeaten in the toughest league in the World. Southampton and WBA both came to the Vic after taking 3-0 batterings and it showed by the way they set up. It's all down to patients. Not that most of you have any.....
1 question to you buffoons would you all take a 0-0 Saturday?
