Why is Deeney STILL untouchable?

Err no. Just making a joke out of the fact that some idiots have taken to listing posters who they deem too negative. And now you are giving Burnsy grief for no reason whatsoever.

Perhaps the knee injury might have something to do with it. Hence the surgery.

Deeney has not been as good in the last year as previously and his actions to get sent off were silly, but they did not cost us the game.

Also your comment about " struggling to get in the box and on the end of crosses" I don't recall us putting in many good crosses that Deeney or anyone struggled to get too.

The whole team has dropped in standard, Deeney being the captain and vocal draws more attention/blame than he deserves.

There really is no point in debating with someone who thinks that was giving grief. He said so himself afterwards.

Grief is hardly a serious word you drama queen. Accusing someone of always being negative is “grief” only in so much as my wife
gives me “grief”. Get over yourself ffs.

Of course he is. The longer he's injured, the more people will forget how **** he is and the more he will improve as a captain. That's how it works.

I think I can say something more succinct rather than endlessly debate average stats etc over many back and forth posts...

I was a major supporter of Deeney on these pages 18 months or so ago. I felt people unfairly laid into him and recognised that while some wanted him replaced, he scored 10-13 goals and that’s harder to acquire in the PL than people think. But crucially my view was based on that he gave more to the team than just goals.

His goals aside last season, he didn’t do any of the added things that made me believe that he was a key member of the starting XI. His hold up play and lay-offs are lower than average but are heightened in some fans eyes because they literally have no comparison anywhere in the squad. I expect that to change with Welbeck who is a better player in every department in the pitch. Deeney just does not fit into a team that employs one striker.

He is our best leader at the moment. And that makes me shudder. Because I don’t see him as an example to others on the pitch anymore. I don’t think he sets a particularly high set of standards which others dare not drop below. I don’t think he’s capable of that anymore. That’s what I mean by ‘can’t keep to standard anymore’ on the pitch. In my opinion he’s fallen into the gap that clubs operated in the 80’s and early 90’s where they had a club captain (Deeney) and a team/First XI captain (also Deeney) - he should have been eased out of his role of the latter.

You’ve gone on to say why not put him on the bench and go from there - that’s fair enough. No qualms with that. But that flies in the face of the original sentence that drew my original reply - ‘we need him more than ever’.

One thing Deeney does do is get the crowd going.

Puts in a shift, doesn't shirk anything, incites the crowd into noise when it's falling flat. Name me another Watford player who will do that right now. He has the crowds backs and they love him for it.

And once the crowd are incited, the team starts battling. So indirectly he does have an effect on the team.

Win the crowd and you win your freedom.

That makes no sense at all. I watched gladiator last week.

    In summary:

    Deeney - crowd - team - win.

Who might they be then? Any 'lists' have only been of those who are constantly negative. Which is boorish.

The opposite of these people is apparently another group who are never negative and always look on the bright side. They have been described as 'happy-clappy'.

I haven't been able to identify them though. Maybe you could provide your own list to assist me?

Nice to see him chomping on a lovely match day snack yesterday in glorious TV closeup.

Mouth stuffed full and puff pastry flecks all round his gob and down the front of his track suit.

There is a new vid on the official site with Deeney doing light training, Says he has been doing pool "activities" and is feeling "like it's a new knee". Good news, hopefully should have him back waving his arms around in no time.

    Pool activities my arse.

Riding about in his tinted window Merc with loud hip hop playing, elbow on the windowsill, sunglasses on his head while munching a Gregs pastie.

I wonder how many new belly rolls he's got to go with that new knee?

I'm partial to a Greggs now and then - but much prefer their sausage rolls over their pasties. :D

He has stunk the place out for about 3 seasons.
He is hardly a prolific striker anymore. He is old and slow, likely to be more so after injury.
Clutching at straws if we think he is turning our season around.

    And still, nothing changes.

There must be something in his contract, genuinely.

The problem is no one has come in a done any better. An improvement is needed, but we don't seem to have one.

We have Welbeck, Pedro and Penaranda, none of which have even been given any sort of a chance (at least not up front in Welbeck's case).

They may also all prove to be crap, but I'm confident they would at least move more than Deeney does, which would be nice.

We were lost without him when he was injured if you remember so unless we spend the cash and do some sort of squad overhaul we will have to make do.

Well Success was supposed to be the replacement and Welbeck used as a very good option but hasn't worked out like that.

    Here we go again...

Our defenders when pressed will lump it long. Deeney isn’t the best, but we’ve all seen attempts at lumping it to others and Deeney is the best at holding it up. He plays because there is nobody better at being the main centre forward and bringing others into play. This is a squad full of absolute pussies like Pereyra, Deulofeu, Sarr - they don’t like going in for headers, let alone trying to win them.

    SSDD.

He’s arguably the best of a bad bunch. Personally I’d stick Welbeck up top and try to teach the defenders how to play out so we don’t need a target man, but here we are. If we can move Deeney on and sign some ball-playing defenders in the close season we should, regardless of what league we end up in.

Deeney has been poor today but it's so clear he needs someone playing upfront alongside him for him to he useful. Persisting with 1 up front is making us so easy to defend against. Literally relying on Sarr.

Yep. Deeney has won next to nothing today and when he has Pereyra and Sarr were nowhere to be seen. Change of style required, and some of our ‘flair players’ (LOL, etc) need to step up. The truth is this is a really poor and imbalanced squad full of hype and little substance.

The Pozzos see Deeney as a way to keep our profile high, he’s essentially our PR machine.

So he gets paid loads and they don’t want to sign players to replace him. So managers pick him continuously.

We will never progress until he is taken out of the team. Will take a brave manager to do that.

Well if he wasn't playing, maybe our **** defenders could pump it into the channels and at least get the opposition facing their own goal once in a while. He demands that it's hit at him as he stands still and loses header after header.

More pace in garden snail. Gets picked time and time again for no reason. We need 2 upfront and who are mobile. Pedro and Welbeck. Pereyra/Doucoure in behind. Sarr and Pussetto wide. No. No.No. Same old sack of ***** from NP. Imbecile.
