It’s like you’re stuck repeating this “yes, but player trading” line.

How do you square the “excellent” player trading model with the fact that the club is in ten times the debt it was when Pozzo took over?

Not sure where you’re finding the Leicester City figures, perhaps you could provide a source, because a quick Google tells me their debt is around £217m and that in February the owner effectively wrote off £194m in one go by converting it to equity.

Hey guys, I’m great at gambling! I won £10k on a horse race the other day!

I lost £100k betting on all the races I lost, but that’s irrelevant.

Gino is obviously so upset about how the players have let him down that he's overlooked this. In fact he's probably seen them as the queue jumpers they are and put a stop to their underhand ways.

    Give him a break James.

I’ve asked you more than once to explain the difference between ‘player trading’ and ‘recruiting players for the benefit of the squad’. It seems to many that the former is prioritised over the latter to the detriment of the good of the club as a whole. Available funds are used on players that are not required at the time (if at all) whilst urgently needed squad reinforcements (eg CB for many successive windows) are ignored. The fact that we are now millions in debt owed to parties from whom Pozzo has successfully created adequate barriers to protect his personal interests and liability suggests that such activities are not designed with the interests of WFC in mind.

Player trading is part of the Pozzo model. Sometimes we see the players and they do well for us and then get a good move for the club. Pedro, Richarlison, Dennis etc and others they go out on loan and hopefully do well and we sell them on. Without that model debt would be well over £200 million.

Of course I want to see the strongest team on the field, we all do surely but the model also allows us to get players like the above on the promise that we will not hold them back. Udinese have been doing it for years

Shame we have wasted so much of that money gained from player sales really and in big debt .

Saying we might be even worse debt wise isn’t really much of a complement!

The Dennis money was probably spent on Bayo and the Nigerian keeper who cost 6 million and not played a league game .

Plus paying agents and compensation to managers.

I assume that Duxbury intended to give Edwards time but if the guy is having blazing rows with senior management something has to give,

I would have sacked Gieratta but I thought Manga now has the responsibility of buying our players doesnt Gieratta make the tea.

I am not a luton fan but there were many teams in our division last year whith much less skill but a lot more commitment.

We all like skillful players but I would take someone with the right attitude and commitment every day of the week.

I agree and I had hoped Gieratta would be gone, hopefully Manga has the authority and the skillset to sort it we need players that care and have commitment. The fun needs to come back into being a watford fan.

Yes, it’s just a shame the players you end up with are totally random and the person who buys them has no control over their character etc. isn’t it?

I have spent quite a few days looking at other clubs and quite frankly some of them make Gino look like a really good guy,

The player trading model is not understood but has kept us out of more serious trouble.

You don’t seem to understand ‘cause and effect’ that well. The reason why we have been relegated from the EPL twice and so lost the large amount of income that guarantees, thereby resulting in the massive debt we now have, is BECAUSE of the player trading model. Had due priority been given to the immediate needs of the squad after the cup final season we’d still be in the Prem and the debt would’ve been nowhere near its current level.

It’s totally disingenuous to say the debt would have been higher without the impact of player trading being 1st, 2nd and 3rd on Pozzo’s list of priorities; the fact that player recruitment to meet immediate squad needs is so far down the list is the very reason for most of the debt.
The player trading is clearly aimed purely at benefiting Pozzo and not WFC. I agree there was a time when the player trading tended to benefit the squad as well, but those days are long gone. One impact of the current model would seem a lack of funds to buy Toney for £5 million only a year after wasting 6 or 7 times that on a luxury winger we didn’t need and the HC who’d just been given an extended contract didn’t want.
But still, carry on believing Pozzo is doing it all ‘for the good of WFC’.

Pedro was a good player and did score some vital goals. He was our PotS last season and for good reason. Unlike most of the spineless shirkers in that squad he actually gave a damn. I was sad to see him go, but also excited for him to see how he can adapt to a side that work well and listen to the manager and have a clear goal.

You can look at other good signings Pozzo has signed off on, such as Kamara (at first) and even Louza was seen as a real gem. However, these few gems pale in comparison to the amount of duds we have had since. We all know who they are so I won't list them. Player trading was a fantastic loophole when the Pozzo's first got involved. We were the envy of most Championship clubs for a good while, however the EFL closed that pretty soon afterwards and since then we have struggled to attract any good young talent (Pedro aside), and totally take no notice of what once was a brilliant academy system. Look at Blake for example. He was a promising striker who hardly got any game time and quite rightly refused to sign a new contract at the club. Instead of using what player trading and transfer dealing we could do, we continue to offer contract extensions to over the hill past it players. The very fact Cleverley was being discussed as an extension is a prime example of this.

Get rid of Bayat, use our academy prospects and focus on our future, which is youth. Cathcart, Kabasele etc. have been great servants to the club but it's time to move them on. Realistically, they should of gone three seasons back when we could of gotten something of worth for them. I am under no illusions that Manga and Costa are good agents, but Gino needs to take a step back and let them do their jobs. Without Bayat playing the wild card of a "cheaper alternative" which gives him a massive cut.

Player trading exists at most clubs. It's the way most clubs survive. What other clubs do better though is also buy for the here and now and that's where we fail too often. Last summers transfer action was off the scale bad and we again wasted £6m on a keeper not ready to play straight away. It just seems to that we are interested in greasing the palms of one agent at the detriment to the club.
Buying for the future should clearly not be ignored but we need to have a happy medium which looks at the future but also the current

I've just seen this now, that is just so... Watford 2023. Did the volunteer's require a fire safety certificate? Is that why it was stopped? Kudos to James and his brother and others who have taken time out of their day to do such a kind and loving gesture to people of the community who need a little extra help. I personally thank anyone who has done this and still does it now, it just human nature to reach out. Awful to hear the club have stopped a tradition I am sure GT would be proud of to this day.

Pedro, yes, is an example of a player who met both criteria. One swallow does not make a summer, and the rarity of that success when set alongside the wasting of money on such as Pusetto, Bayo, Okoye, people like Kalu who have barely kicked a ball….the refusal to attempt to acquire a real upgrade at CB when we were still in the EPL; that’s a clear indication of where the problem lies. Sarr cost what appears to have been most of our transfer budget that summer and he’ll be sold for less than we paid for him and all we’ll have to show for it is a great performance vs Liverpool, the minimum level of return expected of a £30+ million player in the Championship, followed by 2 seasons of apparent lack of interest and corresponding lack of impact. The player was not needed at the time but was purchased as part of the ‘player trading model’ and is axiomatic of the flawed nature of that model.

I’d say a hit rate of JP and Dennis in a 4 year period containing numerous punts is pretty damning.

    So
Maybe but then why didn’t he get rid of Duxbury too if there was a disagreement?

Think everyone agrees that would be more deserving for Gieratta than getting a 3 year contract ..

Sounds rather like job for the boys TBH.

Maybe Manga will have the big say now but based on the January offerings that doesn’t fill you with total confidence really ?

As you suggest the culture has maybe become too pampered to players and they don’t have to work as the manager is the one who gets sacked

The point people are making is who runs all that and is the head of the business/club - Gino .

We just buy whatever shiny toy we can (as well as some not so shiny ones who happen to be represented by Bayat), regardless of age, and regardless of style of play or anything, Gaspar could have been a great signing under different circumstances, but we signed him when we needed a flying machine for example...
