On TV again, Dennis and Sarr get another chance in the shop window. Hopefully they will come at us and we can take advantage with a great counter attacking display and rip them a new one. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I wonder how many of you remember Nigel Callaghan's stunner up there from the 82-83 season ?? (watch from the 4 minute mark if you can't be bothered with the whole highlights of our 3-1 away day in the West Midlands sunshine .....)
Yes, very clearly and without checking I can remember the WBA fans on the terrace openly clapping it. In all seriousness IMHO the games tonight and Friday are massive and will have a huge bearing on how this season pans out. Two wins would be a huge boost, an amazing start, and the squad confidence in themselves and Edwards methods would be sky high. 2 defeats against promotion rivals would be a helluva blow.
If Edwards wins the first 3 all against fellow promotion rivals , we will be installed as firm favourites. The media upswing around the manager will swell to such an extent that we will be referred to as Rob Edwards’ Watford , the highest honour to be possibly bestowed by the Sky minions of his Majesty Murdoch.
Still won't be at the same level as "Wayne Rooney's Derby". Sporting media loves to put us down, and to pick us up around something we actually do deserve praise for gives most of them a headache.
We won our first three games in the old Division One under GT (I always have a reminder of our opening day win at Portsmouth due to a scar on my leg after stacking it down some stairs). We then went on to lose our next three games - but still got promoted regardless. So, yeah reasons to be cheerful.
Yep. We were even 1-0 up at Sunderland against "Peter Reid's Sunderland" featuring Kevin Phillips in the 4th game and dreaming of winning our first 4, before they turned it round and thrashed us 4-1.
That was the hottest ever I'd been at a match, the seats were bolted on to the old terrace and with no roof the early August sun cooked everyone in the away end.
The A5 is a criminally underrated road. I once went to Wigan away on a Tuesday night alone (2015 during the promotion run in) and I was mortified to find the M6 closed after the game. I therefore had to take the A5 all the way back and it was a pleasure. Was home in good time. The fact that it is essentially a rebranding of the legendary Watling Street is a bonus. Interestingly, one theory is that Watford is named after Watling Street. Also hoping Gaspar starts today. MUST WIN.
I heard that Watling Street was named by the Romans after the mighty hornets (or "potenti crabrones watford" as they were then known).
Amazing to see how small crowds were in that era - less than 12,000 at that game (West Brom were mid-table) and I’m sure the Hawthorns had a higher capacity in those days. A rare glimpse too of a svelte Martin Jol. Also nice to hear a blast of the Watford fans’ version of the Kinks hit ‘Dead End Street’: “What are we living for? See L*t*n in Division 4!”
Wasn’t around back then but wasn’t the lower attendance a direct result of football hooliganism which was rampant back then?
I have just met a dog named Dennis whilst buying another feeder, thanks to the blasted squirrels. I hope this is a good omen.
Ironically the A4 road is exactly half the length of the A5 to the nearest mile. You couldn’t make it up.
I had a bad experience doing this years ago. Got a police ticket for not leaving my lights on when parked in a 40mph zone. Someone must have complained because the scores of us affected were all let off. Anyway always parked on Halfords Lane after that in one of the businesses that charge to use their car park. (For 30 years I lived a few miles away so it was a fixture I rarely missed. Best memory was singing ‘we’re going to win 5-4’ during the 4-4 comeback draw and actually believing we could do it.)
