That’s the thing, there are plenty of clubs like us, Sheffield Utd, Bournemouth, Huddersfield etc that got promoted without parachute payments. The clubs who have been moaning about them who may all of a sudden get a bit more money and end up getting promoted will soon start moaning the minute they get promoted, and don’t have the safety net anymore.

It’s flawed anyway, because if there is no safety net most promote clubs like us won’t be able to afford to gamble and will just bank the money. We’ll still have way more money than the rest of the championship so they’ll still be moaning anyway. It will just mean a less competitive PL at the bottom.

I knows what you mean .

On a general football form and there is one Forest fan who is always moaning about parachute clubs.

You’d think they had draw at Liverpool or Man City the other night the way he was talking about a draw at out of form West Brom.

Not anyone else’s fault his team have had even more managers than us and probably players too without coming close to promotion.

Whilst others have got promoted without them or come close.

Of course if less money/turnover was spent on player wages and agents clubs might be more sustainable at all levels of the game but guess no controls on that spending will come in.

That isn’t exclusive to the Premier league as UEA says .

Another reason the second half will be easier is that we'll have a top head coach throughout (we hope).

    All true.
Maybe an idea would be to get the players to agree a relegation clause in their contracts? Why hasn't anyone thought of that before
Or would this mean teams would lose their definite EPL quality players to star for other teams?

The problem is that relegation clauses, if you can get players to sign them, work as it stands because you know with Parachute payments you’ll at least be getting 55% of your income if you’re relegated, so you can tailor them to match you’re new income.

Without knowing what will replace parachute payments, but assuming it will be some sort of merit based payment based on league finish, then you’ll have no control over your income the following year and you could be left with a huge gap even with relegation clauses. So where would you set them, and how would you get decent players to agree to them?

At the moment championship prize money is five million a year, it doesn’t really make any sense to make 1st and 2nd place in the championship worth the same in prize money as parachute payments are, because those clubs will be leaving for at least one year and earning the £100m PL money (or maybe those two and the play offs winners just don’t get any prize money) So you can only assume it will be something like £30m gradually decreasing down, so if you get relegated and finish 12th you’ll be in a whole world of trouble relegation clauses or not, unless you just don’t spend a penny of the PL money.

Who has had longer to work with squad with possible additions in January.

If we can get 2 wins in next 6 games we'll be on 19 point which puts us on track at halfway stage.

I've just looked at the league top scorers and Dennis, King and Sar are all joint 6th with 5 each.

That is another horrendous indictment of how utterly woeful our defence is and how terrible we are at the other end of the pitch. Our front three all doing a very decent job of putting the ball in the back of the net whilst the back four **** the bed and piss all of that good work out the window.

Parachute manufacturers will go out of business if no one pays them. Has anyone thought of that?

There would be skydivers splatted all over the place. It will be utter chaos.

Draws all round would suit us in the games happening today.

The longer Newcastle can go rooted to the bottom, cut adrift, the better it is for all concerned.

Only 50 world class players available. Not sure how they’re going to cope.

Never mind, they’ll all suddenly be fit for Saturday.

Very much looking forward to Newcastle Norwich, a draw would be best but a Norwich win would be so hilarious.

Yes, hopefully a draw although I can definitely see the funnyside of a Geordie loss. Although we could probably do with someone popping Norwich's bubble soon to be honest.

I’ll basically be happy with anything but a Newcastle win.

Dean Smith isn’t a great manager and had lost five on the bounce with Villa. Norwich have by far a worse squad than them, so whatever points they pick up now I’m confident it won’t last.

This is a good video on parachute payments, very balanced. It touches on how some clubs that gambled were 1 game away from achieving their goal… but ended up bankrupt with no stadium.

It's going to be absolutely glorious watching Newcastle go from the elation of the dodgy takeover and talk of signing Mbappe and Haaland, to the sobering reality of spending the 22/23 season in the Championship.

Howe getting a taste of his own medicine, having to play most of the game against 10 men after a harsh sending off.

Not a good omen for Newcastle.

“Newcastle United have not won any of their 18 Premier League matches (D7 L11) in which they received a red card at 0-0”
