Spot on mate! He is doing nothing wrong. Very few if any GK's would have saved that header or even cut out the cross, so why are you insinuating that Ben should have done
I don't think any keepers would have saved that header if they had charged out of their goal and left it completely open. Which is the point being made, it was yet another mistake from him. Foster makes mistakes, Bachmann makes mistakes, Elliot probably makes mistakes. There's nothing wrong with pointing that out.
Why are you guys so keen to slag our GK off all the time even when we win a game away from home like we did yesterday, just WHY FFS?
The header that went straight into the middle of the goal at waist height? Yeah, no keeper in the world would save that.
Because winning a game doesn’t mean it was perfect and a GK making so many mistakes is unsustainable if we want to stay up. Pretty obvious really - so I’m not surprised you can’t see it. The thread for pure, unbridled joy about yesterday is the match thread. This is for chat about Ben Foster. It’s quite remarkable how some people can’t grasp that simple fact about the forum.
Dropped on YouTube casually after United are also dismantled by Liverpool. We see what you’ve done there Ben.
Thats where I think you are all wrong, he does not make so many mistakes as you guys claim, he is a ******* good GK and I don't see why you lot can't see that
Maybe in your opinion, but I suspect I am not the only person who would disagree with you on that count.
Because he makes mistakes week after week while actively putting away supporters in the home end? He’s a poor player and also unprofessional.
It’s been clear as day and often talked about! Came out for the catch/punch against Leeds and missed it - if you’re gonna come, you have to get it. Goalkeeping 101. Goal against Newcastle went straight through him and he admitted himself it was a mistake. Yesterday, Cathcart makes the original mistake - but the picture above lays bare Foster’s awful positioning regardless of Cathcart. That’s 3 glaring mistakes in just 5 games. If he goes along at that ratio this season, we won’t survive. Your comments seem to suggest we are making these things up! Go back, watch the videos. He’s by no means singularly at fault and his defenders haven’t helped him at all - but he is at fault for the ball ultimately hitting the net in all the goals laid out above. It’s pretty deluded to say otherwise in the face of glaring evidence.
When Liverpool smash United away by the same score as us and we smash Everton at Goodison Park, it's probably a good day to post the vlog.
TVOR, can you explain to me exactly how other posters discussing the relative merits of Ben Foster as a goalkeeper affects you, and indeed why that leads you to try and demand that they stop discussing it on a public forum altogether? Seriously - particularly the first question.
Bachmann and Foster are equally shyt. It's pointless arguing really, because for once both camps are in the right. It doesn't matter which of the useless throbbers are in goal, we WILL concede.
I have always said Foster is past his best, but he is still the best keeper we have at the club. That is why I stand up for him against those who slag him off continually and claim he is constantly making errors, because he isn't! He does make some mistakes but what keeper doesn't. What most of the usual subjects never do is credit him for the many good saves he does make, they just go OTT on slagging him for the slightest thing he does wrong in their minds. I don't know this for sure, but I would confidently guess that he has saved far more potential goals against us than he has been at fault for letting in.
If you go down the route of 'He does make some mistakes but what keeper doesn't' then there is no point in analysing any goalkeeper ever, is there - it completely misses the point, to boot - yes, all keepers make mistakes - some of them make fewer than others, and some mistakes they make are less impactful than others. The facts are that Foster has made more glaring mistakes than most others, particularly in the league we are playing in, and more than should be expected have, at least, contributed significantly to us conceding a goal. When you are talking about a goalkeeper, demanding 'credit' for every save they make is just idiotic - it's their job. If they never made a save, they wouldn't be a goalkeeper, and the shoutbox/match thread would be in serious trouble, to boot. You keep saying something along the lines of 'mistakes in their minds', which is both dismissive and ignorant/inaccurate - each of these mistakes has been explained multiple times in detail by those highlighting them - you can't just wag your tongue/typing finger and dismiss them because you don't like the reality of the situation. > 'I don't know this for sure, but I would confidently guess that he has saved far more potential goals against us than he has been at fault for letting in.' Again, this is meaningless - he is a professional goalkeeper, and one who is currently keeping another out of the position. If Foster makes a particularly unexpected or impressive save, he does get credit for that, of course - he always has done, and it's churlish to suggest otherwise. The reason you aren't seeing it recently, is because he isn't making them; meanwhile, he is making mistakes at an alarming rate, and the stats back that up.
In fairness to Foster and Bachmann, some of the mistakes they’ve made are more due to insufficient protection by the defence or, less directly, poor tactics that have caused them to lose confidence or put them in a situation that should never have happened in the first place (Longstaff’s goal is a good example of the latter) than committing howlers by themselves. If anyone can improve and better organise our defenders (as well as, needless to say, the team as a whole while making them more tactically aware) it’s far more likely to be Ranieri than Xisco. While Saturday’s performance had far more of the Ranieri imprint than the Liverpool one, there was still a lingering whiff of the Xisco era in letting in soft goals. But we should finally get our first league clean sheet under him, and the next game is as good a chance as any for that. Then after a few more games of alternating Foster and Bachmann and hopefully more clean sheets, we can properly decide who’s the better of the two.
I agree. These keepers have been far too exposed during matches. Last season was a different kettle of fish. They didn't have hardly anything to do, just basic fielding of the ball, the odd goal kick here and there. This season they've both been worked hard so of course the odd mistake creeps in here and there. To my mind, Foster saves us more than lets us down......a lot more in fact. He was at fault with a very bad positional stance for the Everton second goal and he should have saved that shot against Newcastle, however, in that particular match he was MotM and directly responsible for us taking a point. His quick throw after saving from Murphy when he was clean through nearly won us the game. Foster has made the occasional gaff, it's true, but these are just silly mistakes. With Bachmann, he is a good keeper, but with a serious flaw in his game. He just wont come for crosses. For me, this is not a mistake, but a conscious decision not to come for routine crosses. It doesn't matter how good you are at other things, if you have a weakness like lacking confidence with coming for crosses, in the Premier League teams will just put balls in behind the defensive line and close to the keeper as they know he wont come for it. This is what cost us goals against Spurs and Wolves. Both were the first goal of the game and proved decisive. If he could iron out that failure and was confident to bully those players around him, then he'd be a decent keeper, but staying rooted to the line and hoping the central defenders deal with every single ball is the only reason he's not the first choice keeper right now. We're going need another keeper in the summer anyway, as Foster will almost certainly retire/leave the club. Bachmann wants to be a first choice keeper, but if we stay in the Premier League, I'm not sure he's going to get that at Watford. So, I think we'll have to sign a first choice keeper and let both Foster and Bachmann go. That would open the door for Dahlberg to come in as the number two keeper. That might sound harsh on Bachmann, but I don't really like what I'm reading in the press about what he's saying right now, that he should be playing and will look at his options in January. Yes, I get he wants to play first team football, but he has to be honest and look at the reasons he was dropped. I don't think anyone was against it at the time.
Where was Foster MOTM Vs Newcastle? The one chosen by a random at the game? Social media voted for Sarr, personally I thought it was Rose
RE: was Fosters positioning bad? One of the data things I use for work maps the positioning of every player for every shot - it also shows the optimal position for the goalkeeper so you can see where the goalkeeper should've been. As you can see, Foster was absolutely miles (one of the worst of these I've seen) away from where he should've been.
That’s football boys and girls. Richarlison is a proper player, a proper legend. Leave a comment below if you want this match worn Richarlison shirt and I’ll pick the best comment that says what an absolute legend he is. Come on the boys!
It's been mentioned about Foster coming for a cross and not getting there in the Leeds game. Its also been mentioned about our slapdash defending - for me this means we need a keeper who will take charge of a situation and come out for the 50-50 balls. Bachmanns boots are glued to his line. Foster takes responsibility. Was Richarlisons goal his error? Probably, but look at that gap between what I presume is Cathcart and WTE. Is his error due to him being a poor keeper or due to him needing to dominate his box more because the defence isnt coping right now? I would rather have Foster right now than Bachmann. Foster has also kept us in games and made a lot of saves since he returned.
