More I think of it, it's not as if there's much of a downside to this deal (in and of itself anyway), best case scenario, he bangs goals, worst case scenario, he just stays in the background helping out the young lads

Those options will still be there? Success, Gray, Murray, Suarez

He's a proven finisher. He finds that little pocket of space in the penalty and can actually put the ball away. We've been crying out for a player like that for years, and even though he's getting on a bit, he'll score goals if we continue creating the chances.

It could be that we are simply throwing mud at the wall, and hoping that if we get in as many strikers as possible then one of them will be able to hit a cows arse with a banjo

Imagine this forum if Deeney stays and we face Boro with Murray and Deeney up top. Dream team.

We could sign a 47 year old Tony Hedges from York City and some supporters would say it's a brilliant signing.

Do they all have podcasts or something?

Deeney may or may not be off, but he can't play every match at his age, especially in a mud and blood division like the Championship. Someone will trigger Welbeck's release clause. Success can't stay healthy, so cover is needed there also. The rest of the lot are better out wide. It wouldn't shock me if Gray was off as well, although his wages could prevent that. Having Murray - who at his age is not Premiership standard, to either start the odd match or come in late when you're throwing everyone forward to find a goal makes sense. One of Gray, Penaranda, Success, will likely be off (at least on loan). Sent from the mobile client - Forum Talker

There’s not enough humility at professional football clubs these days. It will be good for all the fancy prima donnas to see Glenn turning up to training on the bus using his free pass.

2 in 24 last season mate. 13 in the last two years. Not as convinced. This move is this season's Dawson special.

786 mins played, mostly off the bench. Equivalent of 8.7 full matches. Brighton were always going to play their big signing Maupay, and Connolly looks a promising player too. Harsh to judge him on the odd appearance here and there, imo.

13 PL goals in 2513 mins (27.9 full games) the season before. Almost a goal every 2 games. Not too shabby.

There's always a chance players fall off a cliff when they reach a certain age, but strikers like Murray who live in the box, tend to last a little longer.

    Well this has divided opinion!
I can see both sides of the argument but I'm leaning towards this being a decent signing. 13 in the last two seasons doesn't scream that but Brighton don't create a lot of chances and of course this has been at a higher level than we will be at next season. Very experienced I believe will be pretty useful as another option next season. As @Malteser2 says, it's a very long tough season and we've got a month less than normal to finish it so although he clearly won't play every game he will be useful to call on especially if we played two up front alongside Suarez. He is a proven goalscorer albeit a bit long in the tooth but I think he will be ok.

You mentioned you saw this 2 years ago? That'll be when he was scoring 13 for a team who scored a total of 35 goals all season (4th worst in the league). 10th highest scorer in the league.

Maybe his lack of mobility 40 yards away from goal wasn't too much of a hindrance after all?

I like this signing in so far as he'll chip in with a few goals, he's got Championship nous and experience and he could actually suit our new playing style. Plus he's a Cumbrian lad so I'm slightly biased

I know, but I wouldn't get too hung up on his recent record in the Premier League. He wont be the main man, just someone who can nick a goal in a tight game coming off the bench. I'd much rather have Welbeck but in the absence of him, he's a good option that will not cost the club too much.

If we plan on playing anything even resembling the type of football that Brighton were forced to play to survive in the PL in the Championship then I'd be extremely worried, especially given the young, attacking talent we have in our squad.

It's not a coincidence that the first thing Potter did when he was brought in to change Brighton's style of play from something other than eye-bleedingly awful was begin to phase Murray out.

As an aside, the fact this came very much out of the blue further suggests that Leventhal is sadly out of the loop in terms of Watford signings.

He first tweeted about it long after other journalists.

    Raid the rest home again.

Will he be a Galli or Cassetti?

    Or a Neill or Diamanti?

I hope it won't be like that (I'm going to be slightly glass-half-full here) and I don't think it'll be like that. He might very well be a Plan B, lump-it-up striker when passing it through ain't working (which we will face those kind of defences). Him being old and slow might also work if he actually works as a forward that stays up front, battles defenders and offload the ball to one of the wingers. This is all wishful thinking though and I'm fairly sure he ain't gonna be first choice

As another experienced head around the place and a plan B there is no real downside that I can see

If he starts ahead of Suarez I may change my tune, but I’d be fairly confident that isn’t what this is about

I wouldn't be averse to us signing him as a Plan B/backup but unfortunately I don't share your faith that that's what he will be given that the likes of Mariappa were signed with that being the supposed intention only for them to be first team regulars for a number of seasons.

I don't think he's out of the loop at all. Sometimes he's bang on before anyone else......quite often actually.

Not sure why people that break the news are always so rubbished, or constantly made to justify themselves.
