In reply to Burnsy's post about not understanding how someone can support more than one club, I wrote:-

I can sort of understand it to be honest, although I only support Watford.
My father was drafted down to Watford during the war, and married my mother and settled in Watford.
Being a football fan and wanting to watch matches, he went regularly to watch Watford, and took me with him as a small kid, back in those days he did not drive, so rarely got to see his team Stoke City.
He developed over the years, a love for Watford, although always watching out for Stoke's results. He always wanted Watford to win, but when we played Stoke in the cup in the 70's he was a bit on the fence, but deep down, I think he wanted Stoke to win, which is right and proper for any supporter.
So yep I can understand it, but not for me as it happens.

But isn't a forum a place to have debate and discuss different views on everything from new signings to what tea they serve in the new restaurants and everything in between? Sometime people have strange views (myself included) and other forum members rightly want to take issue and make their point known. And sometimes that can fall into people saying silly things or antagonistic comments (myself included). But that is all part and parcel of this being a Watford football forum. I personally enjoy reading and taking part in the silly, off-tangent discussions at times and never take them too seriously. If anyone says anything that is beyond the limits of acceptability, I trust the mods to take action but let's be honest, it's very rare. I can assure you if everyone agreed about everything on here and no one engaged in stupid banter or 'goes off script' once in a while, it would have far less regular contribution and would be very boring. If you don't like reading these things, there is an 'ignore' feature or even more so, comments section on the wobby website. But if you venture there, you'll see what this forum would be like with little humour and over-policing of comments.

Everyone is entitled to their view and I respect yours and others who get annoyed with spats, disagreements and childish humour/innuendo. But it's always been a part of what happens on here.

    Who monitors the monitors?

  9. Leighton Buzzer

"Who monitors the monitors?" is a question often asked when apprehension pervades across the ambit of oversight institutions and sectors. CSOs have attracted their fair share of criticism in line with this question within the last few years as their role in questioning and directing civic opinion on public and market policies has grown exponentially in both prominence and levels of influence. This increase in the set of responsibilities of CSOs must be contexualised within an atmosphere of negative public opinion based on popular incredulity at maladministration by actors in institutions from all spheres of life.

I used to support Arsenal because my older brother told me to. It was the late 70s , early 80s and I genuinely developed a strong connection as a school kid - had a full Arsenal kit and scarf, bag etc. Had the team photo on my bedroom wall and loved Liam Brady, Alan Sunderland, dodgy Graham Rix & big Pat Jennings. I totally resisted jumping on the Watford bandwagon when Watford stormed up the divisions. I lived in St Albans, my friends were all starting to take notice of Watford but I was a gooner. Then, what can I say? I gradually saw the light. Significant things happened, like Watford beat Arsenal at Highbury, they couldn't cope with Barnes & Blissett (I was there, with my Watford supporting mate, and I was quietly impressed). I started getting taken to Vicarage Road by another friend's dad. And then in 1984 when Elton cried at Wembley, I watched it on tv and cried too. I realised I cared more for Watford than Arsenal. Now, when Watford play Arsenal, I feel nothing for Arsenal. I want them humiliated. Now, if we sign Kieran Gibbs for a relative pittance and Arsenal fans whine when Gibbs flourishes in his new home, I will rejoice. I am 100% Watford. The Arsenal thing is a distant memory. Yes, I prefer them to Chelsea, because Chelsea are abhorrent. I prefer them to Man Utd, simply because I've never liked Man Utd. I prefer Arsenal to Liverpool because I always hated Liverpool's dominance when I was a kid. I prefer Arsenal to Spurs because we haven't beaten Spurs for years. But do I have a 2nd team? Is it Arsenal? No way. I'm sorry but Watford is my team and I'm Watford til I die.

So you don't care who wins if spurs play arsenal ? If you moved to Hull would you gradually switch to them and feel nothing for Watford in a few years ? I think it's fine to support a team but have soft spots for other teams and hate others for reasons that mean something to you. I will always look out for the Lincoln score due to GT. I'll always hate Palace even before Holloway and that playoff final. . And I'll always want arsenal to beat anyone but us as they were my team til I was 11. They won the double in '71 on the day of my 8th birthday party. But right now they are a shambles. Happily rob them blind over Gibbs.

Exactly right- i am the same - i only support Watford but always look for Lincoln for the same reason and for whatever reason prefer Arsenal to Spurs and Wet Spam to Chelsea (the 1970 semi final still hurts) hate Palace & Luton leeds muff - Prefer Ipswich to Norwich / prefer Everton to Liverpool (rush penalty dive) prefer City to United prefer wednesday to United (Tony Currie related)Villa to West Brom Coventry to Brum Rangers to Celtic Dundee united to dundee Rovers to City (bannister and warboys) Inverness to Aberdeen Soton to Pompey Exeter to Plymouth - all without great rationale - quite like Newport as i went to a 2-2 Watford game down there on a friday night and was treated well - can't stand Swansea due to a nasty incident following a 4-1 win at the vetch when they needed a win to go up - prefer southend to Gillingham due to an incident at the priestfield and Grimsby to Scunthorpe (much the same reason after we won Div 4 championship and some steelworker threw a slab at my Austin Maxi) prefer brentford or fulham to QPR and boro / sunderland to newcastle - (Imre Varadi celebration at the rookery end anyone? and a 4-0 cup replay win over hendon that i played truant to watch) prefer peterboro to northampton - always disliked stockport county due to them celebrating at a game that virtually relegated us - all totally ridiculous but how i feel!

So you were a turncoat and if it was 1417 you would have been vilified, exposed as a traitorous rebel to your true overlord and burnt at the stake. :D

But good on you for seeing the light.
And what happened to your brother?

I was the opposite with gooner and Spurs and Chelsea supporting schoolmates and even a Chelsea supporting brother. But I always supported my little 3rd and 4th tier family club.
Never waivered, never a second thought for other clubs, and it's difficult for me to understand why people support teams they live miles away from and have no connection with.

And a lot of respect for fans who support their local club who will never have the good fortune of having great managers like Furphy and GT and owners like SEJ and the Pozzos who have elevated a mediocre middling league team to the heights I could only dream about as a young boy.

Just glad I wasn't born in Hartlepool or Hereford or Barrow or, God forbid, L***n.

Edit: And are we signing this Gibbs fella or not?

As above. Nobody forces you or anyone to read things that you don't want to read. Skim past them. I appreciate things can get off topic but it fills the time until we actually sign Gibbs or anyone else and then invariably we will get back on topic. I find it sometimes dull to read some posts - but I realise everyone's right to say what they feel, so I either respond with points arguing the post or I just ignore it. It's a forum, people really shouldn't take it so seriously.

For example, In relation to the conversation of people's second team, that was a product of people discussing Gibbs who plays for Arsenal. What should people do? Not let conversations evolve? Or just stop midway and suggest to everyone that we take it elsewhere simply because a couple of people don't want to read it or it's in the wrong section? Because that seems silly to me.

So for now, I will 'feel free' to post and respond where I want and to who I want. As everyone on here should.

That is a bit of a ridiculous line to take. By that reckoning we may as well ditch all the topic areas, all the threads and just have one almighty group thread. Generally it's not a great thing to hijack a thread. Sure go a little off topic for humour, anecdotes, reference, whatever, but it needs to stay mostly on subject.

Not really, but people claiming that people complaining are taking the thread off topic are taking the thread further off topic by claiming this to be the case.

Anyway.... how's this Gibbs thing going?
