I'm surprised this report (rumour) has not come up yet given the alleged Gooner affiliations in other threads.

Saw it in the evening standard and various Web.

I'd like it to boost our English quota and reduce average team age. But can't see it happening due to wages and price, but it's not my money. Plus I think he'd probably have so called better offers.

I think he would be a great addition to our team, you never know he might not fancy moving,

That's not ideal for tracking runners from midfield, although we have had a few defenders like that

In the Evening Standard tonight it reported Arsenal were looking for £15 million and Gibbs was on £60,000 a week. A three year deal then is a £24 million investment. I reckon there is better value out there.

I wouldn't be unhappy to see him here, but I can hardly think of a less likely transfer than Gibbs to us. His price would be our record transfer, and he's already on £60,000 a week, which we are told he'd probably be looking to increase in order to move to a team lower in the Prem pecking order. We already know from their own mouths at the 'at your place' events that the Pozzos see no value in the British market, and this is a pretty brilliant example of that.

He might not be on as much as the article says. Arsenal are famously tight with their wages in comparison to their size.

No wonder we don't buy any British players.

Not a position we desperately need to look at if Aogo is joining. Mason new contract and Holebas seems plenty. I believe the other young LB got a new contract too.

I'd love him here as it was a suggestion I made a while back. Someone known with a bit of quality, who will try hard to stop crosses coming in unlike Holebas.

I'd like to see Mason given a loan with a decent championship team so that he could develop. He could be a really good player for us but he needs some experience

Arsenal defenders not known for their ability to deal with crosses/ corners. Gibbs is sound but not outstanding. 15 million pounds sterling is Wenger's joke. Agree with all posts that much better value elsewhere. Remember we got Prodl on a free and is our player of the season. COYHs!

Too dear, and I'd rather see Mason rotated with Cholebas.

Like Gibbs but 15m silly money. 5-8 million imo. Move on.

£15mil on a FB who has barely played, 27 years old and only has 1 year left on his contract. The only clubs dumb enough to pay that are Liverpool, Newcastle and Bournemouth.

Would like him here but for £10mil or less. Arsenal will be lucky to get £15mil

15 million is a joke. A bang average defender just because he plays for Arsenal (hasn't played in ages) he gets the occasional look in for England. 5 million tops and I'd still not be excited about it

  20. Ake gone to Muff for £20m. I would say Gibbs worth less than half of that on age alone.

way way way too much - ok player but nowhere near that for Ake

I dunno, Ake seems like a real gem and with the huge inflation on player values, I could see him selling on for 30-40 mil to a big side like Bayern or Juventus if he plays like/better than he did for Muff last season; which alone would make him a worthwhile investment. Plus he's very young so he's a long term player whereas Defoe is the complete opposite even though they gave him a three year contract which seems daft.

Even if Ake flopped, he'd definitely be quality in the Championship which is where I hope 'Muff will be in the next couple of seasons.

he can want what he likes - he won't be getting that here will he - Arsenal will have to bung him a nice present when he leaves

it is all about opinions - but he looked flaky when he played for Chelski after his return and unlike say Keane there always looks like there is a mistake in him - i see him in the 10-15 range with 20 possible if he develops

  28. Chumlax

He played one league game for them after his return: against us, at the end of the season, alongside 8 minutes to get him up to speed in the previous game.

It's also not surprising if he did look flaky in that time, given he was plucked from a functioning team he was part of to not playing for basically a full half a season in a team he was not the same part of.

    he played
He played the FA cup games

  30. Chumlax

    Chumlax Squad Player

He played 3 FA Cup games, 2 of which they kept clean sheets in, the third being a win over Spurs. Seems like judging him on any of it would be harsh, especially as he's been a CB for this season, and one match against Leicester for us.

Would it? People always forget wages etc when it comes to transfers. How much do you think Ake is on at Muff? 50k a week sound a fair estimate? That's £2.6m in wages per year, not including what they pay him for his signing on fee or bonuses. Not that much of a worthwhile investment if they sell at 30-35m.

  32. Chumlax

    Chumlax Squad Player

They are receiving the benefit of his services for those wages throughout the time they are paying them, though, aren't they. It's not like any other team is buying up young players and not paying them wages before selling them on for pure profit.

Keane is a solid center back and home grown but lets not forget he was a part of a team that conceded a goal in almost every single away game (Only Man Utd, Sunderland, Middlesbrough and Palace didn't score against Burnley when at home; even then, most of them were 0-0 bore draws). I'm not denying his quality but it's unrealistic to claim that Keane doesn't have any mistakes in him. I think he's like Deeney to Burnley - everyone sees him as that quality player but if you watched him week in and week out then you would see his flaws although I'm sure he's nowhere near as flawed as Deeney.

Ake, like Keane, looked like a natural and a very versatile defender who has great potential. But I agree with you, he can be a bit shaky sometimes but I guess that comes down to his versatility (you can't be perfect at everything). The game where he played for us against Palace in the FA cup semifinal comes into mind. He was almost incompetent at defending in that game and Zaha easily put him into his pocket (rumour has it that if you get near to Zaha you can still hear Ake screaming to let him out - probably why Harry the Hornet fainted when he walked past). But then again, who wasn't? Moreover, that was one game of many and in most cases he was a fantastic player and resulted in him getting Young Player of the year for Watford (granted, he was competing with 25-30 year olds lol)

Like Chumlax said, if he contributes to keeping Bournemouth up, then his wages are well earned in the world of football. Anyways I don't even think he's on that amount. I'd say he's more likely to be on 35k a week based on the fact he is still young.
