Never going to deal at £2m. Deal worth £5m is only way we should deal for one of the best defenders outside the premiership

Williamson went for £2m when we urgently needed to sell. Mariappa is far superior to Williamson and therefore his value should be at least double.

Watford's valuation of Mapps in the close season was £2 million. This is what they said to Swansea and Rogers jogged on. I think Mapps has improved since then though, so a figure approaching £3m or more would be more in line, especially as the January window tends to be inflated. On this one though, I dont think Watford should sell. They have cronic problems up front and their only hope this season is to keep it tight at the back. If we sell our best defensive player, then we will be even weaker. I would be in favour in selling Sordell for around £4/5m as that would provide enough cash to bring in two quality replacements in the attacking areas, but not Mapps. I'm not totally convinced Taylor and Nosworthy would be as good a combination as Mapps and Nos, so we have to be very careful in which players, if any, we sell.

No way, he's just as important as Marvin to the club both on the pitch and as a saleable asset, there's no way we'd let him go for as little as that. I hope....

Agree with HornetBoy here. In regards to value, he has certainly improved on the 2mill valuation. I may be biased, but for me he is up there with Mills as the best centre-half in the league. Newcastle probably won't pay over the odds, but we should definitely hang on until the end of the season at least.

Well they certainly need a defender or two judging by their 5-2 defeat today.

    http://www.sundaysun.co.uk/sport/ne...-contract-is-pardew-s-key-aim-79310-30172925/

"SMARTING Alan Pardew is hoping for a double defensive boost in the next days – by signing a Championship defender and taking a significant step forward in Fabricio Coloccini’s contract negotiations.

United have targeted a second-tier star and even though they will head to Tenerife for a mid-season sunshine break today, Pardew is braced to conduct more business at any time over the next seven days.

The Sunday Sun understands 25-year-old Watford defender Adrian Mariappa is a priority target – with United primed to pay £3million for him.

Pardew did not want to break up the Coloccini-Mike Williamson axis, but sees Mariappa as having the pace and strength to challenge the first team.

The Sunday Sun has also learned that Coloccini’s agent will jet over from Argentina in the next 10 days in a bid to seal a five-and-a-half year contract that will see him end his career at St James’ Park. Talks have been mothballed for months because both parties want to do business face-to-face.

And news that a meeting has been scheduled ties in with United sources claiming a contract WILL be signed before the end of this transfer window."

I think selling Marriappa would be a bad move by the club. Sordell yes, Mapps no.

Agree that we shouldn't sell Mariappa but why would selling the only player who looks like scoring for us be a good move ???

Don't get me wrong, I would love to keep Sordell of course, but realistic enough to know we will have to raise funds from somewhere to improve the side, which it is in desperate need for. Selling Sordell should give enough funds to bring in a quality wide player and proven striker. With £5m we should easily get a player like Tommy Smith and a striker like Henderson or someone of that ilk. Sacrificing one promising young player, for two proven quality Championship players would benefit Watford right now. Selling Mapps for £3m would give less money to spend and would also give another headache, as it wont only be the forward line that would need improving. Mapps does a hell of a lot of tidy up work at the back that others are not capable of. He is a vital cog.

Very few Newcastle fans have heard of him yet seem to think he's not even one of the better centre backs in the Championship! Let's hope Pardew thinks the same way!

makes me laugh........two genuine players - 1 is ok to sell apparently....the other we must keep hold of ? how about we keep both....we wont go bust either way but sell the only player who can score would be a massive mistake , and with dyches eye for a striker as good as stevie wonders , who the bleedin hell ould we replace him with ???

and those of you who think we can get someone as good as hendo or smith in , must be eating lsd for breakfast

There is truth in this. Newcastle see him as the 'cheap option'. If he does go, it would be for no more then £3m. Would be a disaster to lose Mariappa and Sordell.

    http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/11686/7449958/Toon-make-Mariappa-move

"Sky Sports sources understand that Newcastle United have made a bid for Watford defender Adrian Mariappa.

The 25-year-old has emerged as one of the stand-out defenders in the Championship over the last 12 months.

Swansea City showed an interest last summer and were linked with a renewed bid this January.

However, Newcastle have now emerged as favourites to claim his signature after making a move for his services.

Newcastle are in need of defensive cover having lost Steven Taylor for the season.

Mariappa, who has come through the youth ranks at Vicarage Road, has 18 months left on his current contract."

Tell them to do one Bas, keeping Mapps is vital as everyone has said. Without Mapps I can not see us staying up.

No way should we sell Maps, unless it is for silly money, at least £5m+ and even then I am not sure it would be worth it?

He's been Player of the Season so far for me and we would miss him terribly. At least we have an experienced replacement in Martin Taylor - if it were to happen.

We will have a problem with pace at the back as Mapps is one of our quickest CB. Be interesting to see how Mapps gets on with Spurs B team on Friday.

Nosworthy's quick as well. If he's still here by then! I think the way Mariappa will look at it is that he's 25 now, will he get another chance to join a club like Newcastle if he stays? Who knows. He's proven in the Championship, maybe he feels this is his time to step up now.

I reckon £2.5m plus a player a loan from Newcastle would seal the deal.

But Mapps works on Nos's weaknessed, would Taylor do the same? I'd take £3million and Sammi Ameobi on loan as he is quite good down the left.

Wouldn't blame him if he left. He deserves his chance in the prem, personally i think hes a bit too error prone for the prem but hopefully he'll prove me wrong if he goes.
If he did go I think Clint Hill could be a decent replacement, heard him on 5live on yesterday saying his contracts up in the summer and QPR have said he can leave. He was basically saying come and get me

Newcastle have made a bid according to Sky Sports, I can't see him being a Watford player in February.

Of course teams will put in a cheeky bid in order to unsettle the player. Newcastle are an established Premier league club and will have a lot of pulling power. Watford's valuation was £2m in the close season, and it certainly would not have gone down since then. I think they will stand firm on that. It looks as though will we have to be resigned to losing him though, as when Premier clubs come calling, Watford cannot really stand in the way of a player fulfilling his ambitions.

Taylor would be a decent replacement for us, as long as we get a good price. If it provides us with money for a winger or two and a ST, then i'd settle for it.
