i thought i might as well continue the post-season stupid thread trend (or maybe this isn't) but i genuinely want to ask this question: why do you support watford?

looking around on this forum it seems there's a sizeable group (maybe even a majority) who aren't from watford or herts. as such you had the choice to support others, so why watford? even if you do live in watford that doesn't stop you from supporting other clubs (as many of my friends do) so why do you?

    that is all

When I was a kid I followed a club from every division including all the Scottish ones as well; Watford was one of my teams from back then; I became a full time exclusively Watford fan when I moved to Watford fields in the late seventies, and was able to get to games easier.

Born in Watford and lived nearby all my life. They are my local team. Along with that, most of my family are Watford fans or have Watford connections in some way, shape or form.

    I Wouldn't support anyone else!

I supported Man Utd until I was about 14. I woke up one day suddenly and realised that it didn't make any sense seeing as they were on the other side of the country to me. At that point my brother was going to Watford games and took me along too. I can't remember who we played but have pretty much had the Watford bug ever since. I actually live much closer to Luton, and was born in Stevenage, but have no affiliation with either (no affiliation with Watford either until I started supporting them) but Watford are a great club to support IMO and I regret nothing.

I should add that I know one other Watford fan, and I don't even know that person that well! I know no one I went to school with who was a Watford fan. There were a lot of ****heads where I went to school in herts though that if they were a Watford fan, chances are they were a ****head. So it's just my brother, his friend and my friend from uni who are Watford fans. I know no one else!

I support Watford because soon after my ex walked out on me and the girls, we decided we could perhaps go to a footie match. We had been to Arsenal once or twice on a free ticket so my oldest new she liked footie...

We looked one week to see who was home the following weekend to see who was playing at home close to us... Rushden & Diamonds, Luton, Watford and someone else.. cant remember.... and Watford were the only team home that weekend.. and a kids for a quid thing as well.

we managed to get seats really low in the Rookery and behind the goal! We won 2-1 cant remember who against but we were hooked! Came again a few games later to see the scum beat us 2-1 in the cup, then again a after that...

We bought a half season season ticket and havent moved from their since!

Have done loads of away matches with my eldest who is now nearly 19. When we first used to go she had to stand on the chair for goal mouth action.. noiw she towers over everyone.... my 14yr old used to go to sleep during the match, infact slept through several goal celebrations over the years.. a few weeks ago she stood singing her heart out at Peterborough!

So there we go.. reasons why I support Watford... Ilive in BUckingham, which is near Milton Keynes, we went once to one of their away games.. support your local side etc etc but it didnt feel right so havent been since.

Oh and I now have a massive tattoo of the club crest on my arm!

Born in Aylesbury, my Dad started taking me and my brother to games at Vicarage Road since we were 6 or 7. First game was against Crewe, they had Robbie Savage so it must have been 15 odd years ago. He's actually a West Ham fan, but WFC was cheaper and closer so really it's stemmed from that. Had a season ticket by the time I was 15 and kept it for a few years until I was living in North Devon for Uni. Ended up being quite a few Watford fans at my school in Aylesbury, I suppose through similar circumstances.

at that point i thought you had hacked into my facebook and regurgitated my football life story. started off the same, only difference was my parents hated football (typical freshie asians plus my dad lived all over london and saw the skinheads a lot-my parents were never convinced since) and i have no brothers. born and lived in wembley till 8 years old, moved here and only properly started supporting watford when 14/15.

watford was the first football team i actually went to a game to and it'll be my last if i have anything to do with it

Like Cheeky/el distraido I supported Chelsea till i was about 14ish (i was born there). My best mate played for Watford academy (now plays for luton booo) and occasionally got me free tickets. My first game was the spurs game in the league cup where Priskin scored first, that was my first ever football game and i loved it! Unlike Chelsea, I could afford to watch Watford, it was local and entertaining.
I loved the community feel, price and everything about it. I then got my Liverpool supporting brother on board and now both of us couldn't give a ship about Chelsea or Liverpool and both have season tickets!
I suppose i'm sort of the opposite of a glory hunter?

My Mum's side is from Manchester, all United. My Dad's side is from Essex, not really having a team as such so you'd think I'd be a nailed on United fan? When my parents moved over this way my Dad my Uncle on Mother's side went to watch their nearest team, which was Watford. Born in Hemel Hempstead once me and my older brother took an interest in football my Dad took us to watch Watford. I remember my first game was against Crewe, we won, can't remember the score, but it was in the late 90's, if anyone could help out finding out what game it was would be brilliant. We sat in the East Stand and I can remember I didn't for until I was a little bit older after my first game as I didn't like the noise (at Watford? Please.) Went semi-regularly, mainly being taken on family days, and got to a few games a season. Good price offer or something and we got Season Tickets in 05/06, we went up that year and stayed ever since.

In my 6th form in Hemel Hempstead I am the only Watford fan in Upper & Lower Sixth which I think is a disgrace for a town not far from Watford, there's plenty of Arsenal, Man United, Chelsea, Liverpool, a few Spurs (one that actually had a season ticket at one stage) one Leeds, and the odd West Ham. I literally can't get to grasps with what joy people can have in seeing their team being successful having probably never set foot in their team's ground. M'boro last weekend was my final game of my season ticket for however long due to hoping to go to Uni and I'm damn going to miss it.

Going to go as often as possible, as there are some decent away days that I'd like to go to, Brighton (if on Saturday), Charlton and hopefully QPR.

That said, I will soon become a MK Dons fan as soon as they reach the Premierleague

Same with me. I'm at 6th form in Potters Bar, I know 2 other Watford fans and both also support Arsenal. Everyone supports either Arsenal or Spurs with the odd Chelsea/West ham. I think the problem in Potters Bar is the only way to get to Watford is to drive, a lot of my friends would come to the vic a lot if it was more accessible.

I was born in Watford General and was destined to be a Hornet. My mum whilst not a fan of the club used to go to games Home and Away almost religiously, my dad is a United fan so I'll forget about him. My dad did take me to my first game though which was a 3-2 defeat to Manchester United at Vicarage Road in April of 2000 when I was 8/9. I remember the rush of sitting in the Rookery Stand just to the right of the goal watching as Tommy Smith and Heidar Helguson score for the Hornets with Giggs and Dwight Yorke scoring for United with a late winner from Cruiff giving United all three points. I loved the thrill of the game and the roar as Heidar and Tommy scored making them my favourite players, which they still are (as well as DeMerit). Since then I have been a Hornet.

My Dad took me to my first game when I was 5. He was already a season ticket holder on the Vic terrace. Living in Aylesbury I could've followed my mates and supported one of the London clubs (Spuds seemed to be most popular) and I think my Dad realised this so made sure I was hooked before any other club took hold! Damm glad as well.

My Uncle took me to a game and I was hooked, I'm sure it was against Hull. Being brought up in Harrow you'd think that there might be more Watford supporters in my school, but no, just me and one other out of over a thousand kids. 30+ years later we still go together and the talk is just as juvenile as it was when we stood under the scoreboard or flagpole.

I was born in 'shrodells' hospital (next door) and my dad took me to a game when I was 5 back in 1980. We stood at the family terrace (I used to stand on a milk crate at the front) my first televised game I attended was against Liverpool (Ian rush scored a hatrick and we lost 0-3) if you ever come across it I'm the one at the front with my blue scarf around my neck as this was my dads from when we used to be 'the blues'. Hooked ever since, and wouldn't even contemplate supporting anyone else.

I often still look over to the exact same spot where I used to stand, and although it will be good to have a shiny new stand, it will be a little sad to see that part of my life disappear.

I can still visualise now walking up the four or five stairs from the UR concourse out to the seats and seeing the lush green pitch for the first time, Wolves at home in '94. Ever since that day I have held an ambition to play at the Vic and next Tuesday I am doing exaclty that. I genuinely can't wait.

My dad's side of the family originate from Watford/Harrow, my mum's from Fulham. I think it basically came down to my dad getting there first... Not that he would have let me be a Fulham fan anyway! It was a good choice though, I don't think supporting any other team would be as varied as supporting the Hornets. Strangely my dad and I are the only family members who go to Watford matches, even though we live 30 miles away and everyone else lives in the Holywell area.

    Have a good time LBH.

That got me thinking that the pitch state doesn't matter as it's about to be ripped up, but why aren't the club offering chunks of turf to the fans for a nominal price? Got to be a few thousand quid in that?

I started out very young. I can't actually remember my first game to be honest. I used to get carried in by my dad or grandad because I was so young that it didn't really matter that I didn't have a ticket (I hope haha...). I've had a season ticket since at least the year we won the second division, as I remember that season pretty clearly. It was just a matter of my dad supporting the club, and that's what got me into it from the start. I've always enjoyed it.

My dad told me that he basically had to choose a team because he didn't have one growing up in Harrow (my grandparents had just come over from Ireland and didn't really have a football team. Well, they had a gaelic football team of course...), and he chose Watford for no other reason than it being local. He said it was a choice between Watford and QPR, as they were both quite close, and Watford it was.

As for my mum, she grew up initially in Leeds, though she moved all over, and was a Leeds fan up until I was about 5 or so, but started going to Watford matches with my dad a long time before she stopped having a soft spot for Leeds. By about the late 90s I don't think she really cared about Leeds except for a passing interest because my grandad on her side is a big Leeds fan, and now she's perhaps the biggest Watford fan in the family - me her and my brother all go to a load of away games every season and have a great time.

My family are all pretty god advocates for supporting your local team haha. In fact, we convinced some family friends to get season tickets after getting them to come along to a few games about 6 or 7 years ago. The dad was a big Spurs fan, and still supports them on the side, but his son who is my brother's age (5 or 6 years younger than me) is now pretty much 100% Watford I'd say. They've both had season tickets ever since we talked them into coming along.

I genuinely think that plenty of football fans in Watford that support Liverpool, Man U, even Arsenal or Chelsea could be convinced to come to a few games and eventually decide to get season tickets, etc. if they were friends with the right people. They simply don't get the same experience supporting their big club from their couch/down the pub as they would coming to their local club's ground every other week.

My Dad's Canadian and mum is Spanish. We moved to London from Toronto when I was very young and my Dad took me to see some "soccer". I got hooked and have considered Watford my team ever since, although I do go to Barcelona a lot and have a ST for them too. Costs me a fortune in flights, but I schedule my work around football matches....and so far it has worked out quite well.

Was a Man u fan until I was about 6 or 7, then thought it's boring to win every match, you can only be disappointed because if you win and your expected to win its no great joy whereas if your not expected to win and you win its excellent.

It was at this time in primary school they had a scheme whereby you could buy tickets through the school, so my dad used to take me. My family are arsenal/spurs fans, but we went to Coventry at home in the 2000/2001 season and won 3-0 and never looked back.

Nothing beats the feeling of walking through the concourse and out to see the pitch. Even now i still get that same feeling, and hearing z cars brings back so many memories.

For about a year i thought the song "yellow army" was "Hail the watford" until a stranger pointed out i was singing it wrong. I remember the same gentlemen made me sit on my dads lap, because he was a large fellow who took up two seats in the old east stand, leaving me with nowhere to sit.
