Does anyone know the date when the scoreboard was installed at the Vicarage Road end? My Dad helped connect it up and I spent time walking around the drowns whilst he worked. Remember the greyhound track was there, I think. Just wondering how old I would've been - it's down to this why I ended up growing up as a Watford fan.

    I'm guessing at 74-75, possibly a year earlier/later

Find or replicate this lil' cutey for the proposed stand at the training ground.

I wonder who "owns" this. Is it still in the Red Lion?

I believe there was two different scoreboard at the Vicarage Road end. The first one was put in place around the time you stated, mid 70's, and was considerably smaller than the 'iconic' one.

    This was the second one..

You got a date for that photo? '81? '82? I keep staring at it trying to find myself and, infrequent poster, hollywoods_b1tch

Of course ... and I'm trying to think. Wasn't it just prior to our 81-82 promotion season?

I was thinking 79 for the big scoreboard. Not sure though. Trying to find details in the Centenary book.. but without luck.

If you have a look at this link you can really 'zoom in' on the pic.

I notice a couple of blokes wearing England away tops from the years 82-83. I also noticed a certain ginger skinhead from Aston Clinton :)

The best score boards were the letters next to the dog track. At half time someone would put up scores next to the letters, each letter referring to a different match, so we knew the half time scores around the country.

1978 according to Wikipedia. I have vague memories of he Brentford Manager complaining about it being the slippery slope to introducing American razamataz into English football.

Ive got that pic saved somewhere.. i just have no idea where. I remember it had 'Watford 3 Tring Town 1' on it.. and that was the scoreline from the Herts Senior cup of 1978.. so it all ties in.

Here's another pic of the old board. I dont recall it being that small!

Haha I'm in that, directly below the midpoint between the 8 & 0 alongwith 3 mates from WBGS. It might be the 8-0 drubbing of Sunderland on 25th Sept 1982 as the same sponsors on the scoreboard match the ones in Stevo's vid of the game, and its when Luther scored 4 of the goals, perhaps explaining the message on the board.

I was thinking it was probably from the Sunderland game.

PS Here's the YT clip without the annoying clicking sound :)

I'm guessing that Millwall result is from a preseason friendly.

  24. Stevohorn

    Stevohorn Watching Grass Grow

Yes.. 5th August 1974, Watford 1 Millwall 0 (though on the scoreboard its looks like the other way round)

We didnt play them in a competitive fixture between 72 and 1980.. and we didnt play them in the league between 72 and 1990.

And then they'd wheel round a board with the winning "Penny on the Ball" number. Tickets were an old penny and the prize was the match ball from that day.

I wonder if any of those match balls are still knocking around somewhere Ron?

    Brilliant if they were.

It is rather sad how many of the people in this picture are now dead, including young Kitson, second from the right on the front row with the juniors.

Hey intrigued by this. Is there a full listing of the players captured in that photo? Would it be on Wikipedia.

Wasn't that long ago so suprised that a number have passed on.

management team Bonsor, Ron Rollit; Mike Keen; Pat Molloy and player Pat Morrissey all passed - Photo is nearly 40 years old, so players will be in their late 50's mid sixties now.

Ron Rollit's son, David, was a good mate of mine. I used to go to most of the games with him as a teenager. Lovely guy, who sadly died himself in his 20's.
