He wont be dropped or rested until we are mathematically safe the likely scenario. So more games to come.
Poor performance, didn't look like scoring except for a moment of magic. Lucky not to concede a late equaliser as well That being said, a win is a win at this stage of the season. We will need to be much better in the next two games Fancy Spurs to let us down midweek
Brilliant result, I for one am so relieved and have some renewed hope. Thank God for Deeney. There’s no way we would have won that without him.
I agree with 300's assessment, he's lower PL standard at best defensively and still has too many brain-farts, while on the ball and going forwards he offers absolutely zilch (except for that one goal vs Everton which didn't matter anyway). His "passion" only appears to be evident during water breaks, on the pitch he's still too lethargic most of the time. He's a clear step down from where Holebas was for us.
I thought that was quite stressful , if we had played with that intensity (as apposed to skills) against Southampton and Burnley I would have been relatively happy I thought we ran a lot more than the last few games and harangued , age old question though, were we better or were they just crap Sarr is clearly ridiculously fast, why has he stopped running Into the box though , he ain’t that good at passing in to the box (yet) , but is very good and sprinting into it
Deeney angry again remembering the days he could perform the same technique. Not even a rocket booster could propel him to such heights again.
What a relief! Not a great performance vs a poor side , but terrific goal from Wellbeck ! We still barely threatened today so I’m not sure if we are going to get Firing Abu time soon I just can’t see us picking up any more points if we play like that but at the moment we are still hanging on and think another win ( if we can get one ) would almost certainly be enough . It’s so weird and painful watching Watford at the moment and there’s very litttle joy in it . I almost feel like I need a break from it !
Don't think we would have won that game against any other team in the league. However, hopefully that takes some of the fear and lack of confidence out of the squad and we can build on it for the next couple of games. We're all going to say it again, and it's not going to happen, again, but just play Welbeck up top instead of Deeney. Please. Absolutely crazy that we still have a decent chance of staying in the division, but that's how the cookie has crumbled this year. Let's get there, and start the rebuild to end all rebuilds.
Eh ? I've seen Masina deliver some excellent crosses into the area. He rarely gets to the byeline but delivers them from deeper positions. He certainly could deliver them from the byeline for Bologna. He has been coached differently here partly because of the negative mindset our coaches seem to adopt.
Even after all the discussion this week, Deeney's performance tonight was an embarrassment. It's hard to believe he can sink that low. Couldn't even pass a ball straight. If Nigel can't see from that, victory or not, that starting him is madness, then his career is finished. Our jokers might not be aware of it, but those of other clubs will be.
Excellent. 3 points was the objective and that's the most important thing, never mind how we played. There's still hope. COYH!
Huffed and puffed through it. Two very poor teams. Fair play to Dawson he wanted that more than any of their defenders. Top notch from Welbeck. Three points was what was needed hopefully build a little confidence from this for the Geordies on Saturday.
Three points is three points but it simply doesn't feel like a victory given the level of performance and team selection. Femenia was well and truly rinsed by Hernandez in the first few minutes. Thought we were in for a (even more) torrid evening after the opener and the first few minutes. Deeney was somehow worse than against Chelsea. Not particularly useful in the air - on the occasions he did win the ball, it didn't end up going anywhere near a teammate. Atrocious with ball on feet, especially in the second half. No exaggeration to say he couldn't pass the ball a couple of yards...I lost count of the occasions he ballsed up a simple, simple pass. I now see why we pump long ball to him. 22 times he lost possession. Twenty-two. As many have said on other threads, if he was a true leader, he would now step aside for the good of the team and admit he has not been good enough. However, we all know his ego is bigger than the club and his exit from Watford Football Club is becoming sourer by every match. Doucoure was a passenger again. Bench him for the next game and play Welbeck central. I can't see Giraldi allowing this to happen, given we'd be looking to sell up come the end of the season but his value must be coming down by a few million each game at this rate. Aside from the Welbeck goal, I can't recall us creating much in the way of goalscoring opportunities in the second half. Sarr should have been fed the ball on every occasion after their left-back and left central midfielder were carded in the opening 10 minutes. Basic stuff. I knew it, you knew it. Did the players on the pitch know it?
Lots of application tonight, can't fault that. When you're down on confidence and lacking quality you need to work hard and we really did. Some of the senior pros really stepped up - Welbeck, Hughes, Capoue, Doucouré and Cleverley all put huge shifts in. Yes we were against the worst team in the league but we had to match them for effort and hope a moment of quality shone through, which it did. It won't be good enough against any other team in the league but it's something to build on. Deeney also put a lot more effort in but there was a five minute period in the second half where he messed up a counter attack, played the ball straight to them, played it out of play, then committed a needless foul. He can't play 90 minutes (although ironically he's useful for the last five time wasting). Kiko was absolutely garbage first half but got better. Him and Masina were pathetic for the goal, as was Foster who turned to check his post just as Buendia turned so wasn't ready for the shot which didn't even go in the corner.
A truly amazing goal from Welbeck. Glad Giraldi risked him tonight. Apart from that, some of our play is legitimately hilarious. Well worth the watch.
Think that’s it for Bournemouth can’t see them getting four points from their remaining games. Could see Villa getting something against Palace and West Ham. Would bite your hand off for 2 draws next.
I think it was a better performance today , but agree if we had a decent other option he shouldn’t be getting in the squad I have been a big Deeney fan but wonder if he might be more suited to a championship team now (guess we may find out next year)
I'd stick with Sarr Deeney and Welbeck as the front three. Each gives the opposition something different to think about and they switched sound positions a bit tonight. The only genuine options are Gray or Pererya.
Not convinced about that. He was pretty poor second half too. There was one Norwich attack where he had three goes at getting the ball from Lewis and failed. He was regularly too far away to have any impact when crosses came in. And in that frenetic last 10 mins of play he missed a couple of chances in successive Norwich moves to take down their No 56 (Martin) while he was still in our half and remove all the pressure.
Phew!!! We won, but we did our best to throw it away yet again. How that young Norwich lad did not score near the end I'll never know but thank **** he didn't OK lads lets go out and stuff the Geordies at the week-end, and to put a cherry on the top of the cake the Spammers as well when we play them. U 'ORRRRRRRRNS
That was a tough watch. I consumed far more alcohol than I was anticipating. It's painful watching Deeney attempt to play football these days. Kiko & Doucs were playing for Norwich I think? A massive win though. COYH.
