Tbf, Townsend's 'opinion' (no idea if he actually means it or whether he's saying it for clicks) I'm sure would be fairly commonly held among pundits, what Deeney said seems engineered with the sole purpose of creating outrage

I really hope he gets a chance to play for Birmingham and I think he'd be successful with Bowyer in charge.
Saw the Deeney interview. Came across well. Anyone promoting the idea that he has a low IQ, must have been disappointed.
I am sure that the usual suspects will soon be posting some negative remarks. More media coverage for the watford brand .
It’s not though. It’s Troy setting himself up for retirement either this year or next year. Not “Watford branding”. Your attempts to defend him at all basis are bizarre.
If we’re giving PL starting berths to pundits then I vote we see what Shearer’s got left in the tank.
Lots of mentions of Watford, lots of clips of him on the pitch for us. Did you watch the interview ? Of course he needs a future after football, that will almost certainly be in the media because frankly he's bloody good at it. Stopping his media work would not magically turn him into the Troy of 5 years ago.
It was a decent interview, Naga Munchetty asked twice at the end whether he would still be at Watford next season, he said he would be. I didn't quite catch it at the end of the piece but I think she said she was a Watford fan.
Yes it wasn't clear - sounded that way but I'm not sure that's what she meant. I think she was trying to suggest that she's seen him play and is a fan generally. Per this tweet, she lives 5 mins from Watford but grew up in sarf London and is a CP fan..... https://twitter.com/TVNaga01/status/299980077322604544
Deeney seems to be a bit like a Jonny Bairstow type. Seems like he almost needs people abusing him to motivate him to prove them wrong. Sounds like he's motivated for next season, and hopefully he'll be fully fit. I still think he's a good squad option for any lower half PL team, so long as this season is just a blip as he said he wasn't fit.
He's not a first name on the team sheet any longer. And he mentioned he'd be fighting for his place back which might be a really good thing. I know hes not ever going to be what he once was, but if he was fit a couple of weeks back for the Luton game I'd have been happy.
Apologies, only seen 3 or 4 clips that were circulating online a lot more so than others that were made up off a couple of minutes or so, and incorrectly assumed that was it. Agreed regarding the media work won’t turn him back alone into 5 years ago but that won’t happen at this point given the age in his career, but the point for me is, if I were not delivering as should be expected of me for my employer and went into regular high profile roles in the media - Wouldn’t I be scrutinised for having my eye off the ball? Absolutely not disputing that the bloke shouldn’t plan for the future, more footballers should, but there’s a balance for me that’s been outweighed for a while now.
He was clearly gutted in his Hive Live interview last Saturday that he couldn’t in any way make our promotion about him.

No chance. He's aware hes not the main man anymore. He is a good option to call on at any level and can play a part. If fit. I think we have missed him as an option to replace Pedro in recent games.
Just because JP hasn't been up to it in recent months doesn't mean that TD is the solution going forwards either.
Im sure the usual happy clappers will eat up his "honesty" but the stats don't lie, he hasn't scored consistently from open play for a good few seasons now and the team is clearer better in terms of both performance and results when its no longer built around him Thanks for the memories Troy, I genuinely mean that from the bottom of my heart, but please have the good grace to now step aside without blaming social media/the fans/Ivic for your objectively diminished output - there is no shame in getting older and your career naturally winding down
The classic narcissist - codependent relationship, feeding off each other as they spiral into oblivion...
I found it quite funny in the WD18 video that he said it is only him that gets called out on scoring penalties and that no-one says that Toney/Armstrong/Pedro/Sarr score penalties too. The WD18 guys should have said, 'They score penalties but they also score from open play, so it isn't a relevant point'.
In the interview he even seemed to try and blame Sarr a bit, saying basically no strikers anywhere are capable of keeping up with him to get on the end of his crosses!
Exactly, but the WD18 were clearly erring on the side of safe sycophancy in that interview. Also, I wonder if Troy really believes that, or if he's rather so precious and desperate about trying to protect his image?
Have the interview on in the background currently and literally just as a I read your post on 'safe sycophancy' one of the lads has asked him a question from, I quote, "a privileged white male perspective" I like the WD18 lads for whats its worth but good grief...
He hasn’t done it on the pitch for 5 years and no club should spend £100k per week on a cheerleader. If he wants to negotiate terms on a coaching role then fine, otherwise the argument that we need him around as “a presence” holds no water at all.
Just heard the WD18 interview. Nothing wrong with it. Troy is Troy. Larger than life with a big chip on his shoulder (his ankle too by the sounds it). But I think he’s brilliant. A lot of people hate his approach and all his self promotion, but a lot of it is true. He has carried this club during the bad times. Watford have been good for Troy but Troy has been good for Watford. Don’t take what he says too seriously. His heart is in the right place and he loves the club. For me, that’s all that matters.
Absolute garbage in his last couple of seasons in the Premier League, absolute garbage this season at a lower level in the Championship, about to turn 33 and thus naturally out of his prime and declining, focus clearly shifting towards his next career... "Troy just needs to get fit and motivated to prove the doubters wrong!!!" It's honestly just ******* painful to read over and over again. When are people just going to let go? He's old, he's not very good and he's finished. Get over it and move on. Jesus.
Seems pretty obvious he asked to leave, the club agreed he could but there were no takers so he had to be reintegrated into the squad.
