Strange news to break 3 days before we play them.

Not overly bothered to be honest.

It's probably a good move for him if it is true and if we can get £25,000,000 upwards it would represent a good financial deal for a 29 year old!

I know it was only Sunderland and they were woeful yesterday but we didn't miss him in the slightest, and genuinely think we played better football without him!

Yep, would also be happy to collect the money for Troy. Now is good timing.

Sounds like a Pulis plot to extract revenge for not selling them Iggy in January.

He's our top scorer, has scored 4 goals in our last 6 games, there is no obvious replacement to come in, he's our captain and a club legend and some think it's a good idea to sell him to a divisional rival :sign15:

his going to go at some point and £25m now is as good as we are going to get.

A leader and a worker yes, but there are better goal scorers out there

Why is he going to go at some point? And why the desperate need to sell players to make money? We signed him for £500k seven years ago and £25 million (which we have absolutely no chance of getting for him anyway) is a fraction of the ever-increasing amount of money we get every season in PL prize money.

The majority of our transfer dealings over the last couple of years don't exactly fill me with great confidence that we'd be able to adequately replace him as a player or personality either.

If he wants to move to be nearer his family then hopefully we won't stand in his way providing we get around the £25m mark. He is probably at his peak now and age will inevitably catch up with him towards the end of his current contract.

However I hope he stays to become an even bigger legend than he is at the moment.

His scoring stats are inflated by him being the penalty taker and I think even Okaka (in his 6 appearances ) has scored more goals from open play than Deeney has in his last 6 appearances.

But short term stats don't really mean that much. Deeney has contributed much over the past few years and deserves credit.

But the bigger picture is that Deeney should be sold if we are offered £20m to £25m as there are better strikers out there than him, in my opinion. The one doubt I have is that whilst many other clubs seem to identify and sign decent proven strikers, we seem to struggle.

Why are people so bothered about us collecting money for him? **** the money, he's the one player who influences the whole club so let him go on a free in 4 years for all I care.

Not sure where you're getting those numbers from but Okaka has made 12 appearances this season and scored 3 goals. Of the 9 goals Deeney has scored this season only 3 have been penalties.

If we can pick up Suarez or Neymar, we should reluctantly let Deeney go IMO.

He has started 6 times in the league and scored 3 league goals. Pretty straight forward facts really. Obviously he has made some sub appearances, and maybe one in the cup. But the stats I quoted are Premier League stats as that is where his real value to us is judged, what Troy does in the League.

As I said, and as you now confirm, Troy's goal scoring record has been inflated by his penalties, by 50%.

But, he is a good penalty taker, and again deserves credit for a good conversion rate.

But not what you originally said. Starts and appearances are completely different things. You said that Okaka has made six appearances. He has actually made twelve. Okaka hasn't scored more goals this season than Deeney has scored from open play in his last six games either.

Not a dig at you; I just wanted to clear those inaccuracies up.

What an interesting article; apparently my ultimate football bro is Diego Costa!

In terms of Deeney, it might be a good deal, not that we'd probably get that money, but I think his relative worth can't be measured purely in monetary terms. His influence as a form of continuity, as really the only link to the pre-Pozzo era (except Cleverley now, I suppose, sort of) and as a leader in the dressing room in these recent times of managerial instability are irreplaceable factors.

Sell him for £20,000,000 and use that money and money earned from the Prem to go towards a player such Dybala and/or Sanchez. Last time I checked, their clubs don't have much ambition.

Deeney's leadership skills and continuity factor in the manager merry go round are priceless.
AND he speaks English like what it should be spoke and he talks a lot of sense.

Those factors alone make him a huge asset to Watford FC.

£20m may replace the striker but no amount of money will replace his other attributes.

And £20m is f all in the EPL these days, and Walsall would get a fat wad of it if Troy left.

Having said all that, if Troy WANTS to leave because he's disillusioned with Wally and because his missus wants him at home in the Midlands, well that's a different matter.

I'd personally like him to finish his time here, and then take on a coaching role with a view to moving up into management. Seems like a great motivator, and his story of "what you can achieve if you work hard" is already written.

He's the nuts and spine of the team and club. No wait, we've just beaten the bottom team 1-0. He's clearly surplus to requirements.

20 million quid is larger than the record transfer fee of 10 Premier League clubs, including ourselves (and West Brom, for that matter). It may or may not justify selling Deeney but it sure isn't peanuts.

Unless deeney tells the club that he wants to leave we need to keep him at all costs. There's been so many games this season where half our players don't turn up. Rather than selling our 1 natural leader we need to be buying more. We need a leader in CM who will kick capoue up the arse if he starts dissapearing and screams at our wingers if they don't track back. We need a leader at CB to make sure our fullbacks are where they need to be and actually marking their men when balls come into the box. Getting rid of leaders is the opposite of what needs to be done.

Using the style of football we play to beat the bottom team in the league as a reason for getting rid of our captain is ridiculous. Deeneys played in Watford sides where we play good passing attacking football and excelled. If we play to many long balls to deeney then the managers tactics need to change rather than selling the player.

How much would it cost to get a better younger home grown striker?

    £20m is cheap.

I'd like to see us move to a formation with a front-two, with a more creative and technical player alongside Deeney (Success springs to mind). Selling Deeney for 20 million would be pointless, we'd lose a chunk to Walsall, we'd lose our captain and one of our most experienced players. We all know we'd end up buying a replacement that is injured, unfit or shyte. There's plenty of players that need to leave over the Summer but Deeney isn't one of them. WE need to start building our team next season around the better players like Cleverley, Preyera, Deeney, Prodl etc.

Also, if Deeney is to move to any midlands club it will probably be Birmingham towards the end of his career here.

I bet Troy was watching that getting more and more p!ssed off and frustrated wondering why they don't play like that when he IS playing.

He lives in Birmingham with his family. He pays his mate to chauffer him to and from training. I'm not sure being in the midlands is an issue for him at all.

There's also no financial need for the club to sell as a replacement will eat most of the transfer fee received.

When he was being linked to Leicester last summer I was concerned as I thought his persona was irreplaceable.

However, the way in which he came back to preseason 2 stone over weight and he terrible form and general demeanor in the first half of the season has led me to reassess my thoughts. There does seem to be a correlation with his improved form and Ighalo leaving though.

I would take the money regardless.
