Just been watching the action from Sunday and noticed one of the Arsenal players got only a yellow card for a raised arm and taking out the Leicester player when he was flying down the wing.

    Of course they all complained!

He did later get himself sent off....cue more Arsenal complaints.

Looks like Man Utd are going to appoint one of football’s great thinkers as director of football!

Wolves now have 4 points on us. They won’t beat Liverpool you’d hope but will beat Fulham.

We don’t get 7th even if win our last two. Realistically we are losing to Chelsea. We might get a result in the last game.

Best we can hope for is 53.

Wolves end on at least 57. More if they get a result against Liverpool.

You’d predict however given the ref we’d lose the Fa cup final. Let’s hope Europe depletes wolves at the start of the season next year

That 7th placed boat sailed a few days ago & not worth discussing again unless matters take a drastic & unlikely turn.

Second season usually deemed the most risky & with a European campaign for Wolves looming I can see a few laughs at their expense next season.

All comes to he who waits. We might lose the battle but we will win the war. I'm off to make a cup of tea now.

Just walked into an Irish pub in NYC.

Brusquely told off for calling it ‘soccer’.

Son was banned I think .

Been a different 2nd half but no real chances for Spurs for all their huffing .

The phrase ‘having the trappings of success’ was made for Tottenham.

They’re football’s equivalent of an unnecessarily loud phone conversation held whilst leaning against a blue BMW 5 series in a motorway services car park.

    Maybe a white one?

I watched the second in a pub in NYC & a small group of local Irish guys were bellowing for Ajax.

I asked them why & they said that Ajax were a proper team & a proper club. I suspect they’ll be sitting on the same barstools today hollering for Liverpool.

Spurs could be in for a slide out of the top 6 when Poch leaves.

Definitely more on the gentle observational end of the spectrum.

I waited briefly outside for a Scotsman, a German, a Frenchman or a Jewish guy for the classic set up but none were available.

A young Dutch fellow came in & was thoroughly bewildered by the local support for Ajax (see other post).

  16. Filbert

It can be a white one but I have a specific person in mind.

He couldn’t have been as confused as I continue to be by hearing 60000 Spurs fans chanting ‘*** Army’ at their team.

I get that Tottenham is notable for having a lot of Jewish people living there, it’s the leap from that to chanting the word ‘***’ that flies over my head. I’ve never given it much thought before so I’m probably totally wrong and missing something so someone please feel free to educate me.

It feels to me at the moment that it’s the equivalent of Leicester fans bursting into a chorus of ‘P**i army’.... but as I say if someone could put it into context for me that would be helpful and mind expanding.

WillisWasTheWorst Its making less grammar mistake's thats important

I believe it began as a response to other teams' fans (you can guess which) using offensive chants against them because of their demographic. They now believe they have 'reclaimed' the term so it's alright for them to use it. They're wrong. It isn't. It's still offensive.

  22. RookeryDad

And I understand the Ajax Jewish association is because their ground is near the old Jewish area.

Slightly tenuous but the fans refuse to give up that association despite the club’s directives.

So what are your views then on black people using the 'n' word?

  24. FromDiv4

If a word is bad, it is bad. It should not matter who uses it.

If you "reclaim" a word and force a different meaning then ok, but then everyone should still be able to use it.

Not sure that is true. A black person calling another black person the n word I think is judgement call between the two of them. A person not of that race could probably use it with the express permission of that person but not in general.
Gay/queer are used as terms of abuse. They have been reclaimed but again you could use in group but only from outside the group if you had permission that it doesn't offend.

Think its all about the perception of abuse from the perspective of the group a word is being used against. And this is usually linked to a history of true discrimination.

Y*d, in the way spurs use it, is harder for me to call. A Jew could probably get away with calling another Jew this word again with permission. It would be a offensive for a gentile to call a Jew this word. Not all Spurs fans are Jewish though so it is on the cusp. You could imagine some Jews being offended by gentile spurs fans calling themselves this word but then that is measured against a masculine environment in football where abuse is slightly more tolerated than our more liberal society. Plus it is used as an identifier for inclusion so not primarily in an abusive way

This is where confusion happens and meaning misunderstood. If someone uses a "bad" word how does the person hearing it know the meaning behind it? They may have the permission of the person they are talking too directly, but someone overhearing the comment is offended.

All murky and open to interpretation. That is why I think it is easier to say no one can use a word or everyone can use a word.

If everyone was more tolerant and did not try to call people names in an offensive way it would not be an issue, but alas there are bigots out there.

But you can’t tell gays not to call other gay people gay. Can’t legislate for it. If you try to ban something like that they’ll use it more. You going to prosecute people for private conversations ?

Any word such as ****** or *** or **** should only ever be used in a context where EVERY party understands it is not being used in ANY negative fashion. So a black person can call another black person that word, but both parties know its a term of endearment and the listening world know too. Thats why black people in the US refer to it as being owned by them, they see themselves as the only ones who can use it without offering a negative undertone. The ownership of that word is a bit of a myth though, because there easily could be a scenario where a white person uses the word in context and clearly without offering any negative tone, there cant be a clear explanation why only one type of skin colour can use it, that only reinforces any thought of discrimination.

I'm unsure if the word *** is the same. Tottenham claim it's ok but i feel that if they were singing "****** army" it would be criticised heavily and I dont see the difference.

I think I agree. But the asterisk make it confusing. I assume you are not including “gay” in this post?

That's brilliant and I'm stealing it.

Onto the Y word - oddest one I ever saw was a frummie/'Jewish cowboy' family (mum, dad, couple of kids and a tot in a pram) walking on the opposite side of the road of whatever's the name of the big pub in Enfield. Big group of Spurs fans outside and when they catch sight of them the Spurs fans begin chanting with rhythmic pointing "...yiddoes...yiddoes...yiddoes..." to which the dad and kids give a big thumbs up to a cheer from the fans (the mum didn't look too happy).

FWIW most of the East European/Slavic languages use some construction containing the phoneme "žyd" ("zhid") in their word(s) for Jew(ish) - but that's to be expected as most of them are anti-Semitic mother******s.

  33. Cthulhu

That example, might have made the mother uncomfortable but seemed generally friendly and not abusive.

The thing that really matters is intent behind the words.

The problem is that once you use a word, your intent has to be interpreted by someone else and they very well might get your intent wrong.

As a result, it's best to just exercise your vocabulary and select another word that gets the point across without risk of causing upset.
