You say in one sentence You don't know, it's not your job Then in the very next sentence you contradict yourself by saying You do know that there are players who are better than Scott Hogan etc.

I'm not going to name every single forward in the world who is available for less than £15 million and is better than Hogan am I?

Why don't you tell me something about Hogan's game that makes you think he can be a good player for us?

I do accept your point of view, and understand that £15m is a lot of money to spend on such an unproven player. However, this isn't the first time we've been linked to Hogan. We are short of options up front at the moment and have cash available. If we don't intervene now and just let Hogan sign for West Ham, we may miss out on signing a player that we may well have been looking at for a few years now.

January is never the ideal time to do business, but considering our dismal situation upfront, our supposed past interest in Hogan, our need for more HG players and the possibility of being pipped to who might been a long-term target of our by our rivals, I think we should make an exception in this case and got for Hogan.

It's an interesting little debate, this!

Why do people care how much players cost? It's not coming out of your personal bank account and the club is now rich as ****. 5, 10, 15m? It just doesn't matter

Sky reporter says he could be a West Ham player within 48 hours. We're stuck with Ighalo, I told you.

    I don't know - I'm not a scout.

There is a difference between me giving you specific names and me saying that there are almost certainly players who are better values for money. Swansea signed Llorente for next to nothing in the summer and West Ham signed Antonio for £7 million for example.

Also why are people ****ting their pants over £15m? Ighalo had one good season in the Championship, would we have taken less than £15m for him? Plus Hogan is homegrown. If you're a good player in the Championship and you're homegrown then your price is heavily exaggerated even before people start bidding for you.

Is there any evidence that we are after this guy. Wd sport said definitely not a week or so back- what's changed?

I agree with this. The only thing I worry about is whether the player is going to improve either the squad or ideally the first team. The money is whatever the going rate is, and for the accountants to decide.

Sounds like he's off to West Ham. A shame for us as felt he could have been what we were after.

Who next then? I can't see Ighalo being here by the end of the month, so we must be looking at the market for a striker.

All this talk about albatrosses honestly! ... Ignoring FFP then it doesn't actually make much difference if Ibe flops, Muff's owner is minted.

And to the point of being able to keep us in the PL then so is ours I hope.

  15. Or Tyrone Mings. Or any number of players who just don't make the step up. Anything over £5m for someone who hasn't got premier league credentials is a massive gamble.

Of course, but the argument is usually why the club are failing to sign homegrown players. What people are pointing out is that more often than not the club don't see value in the market. We will probably not pay £15 million for Hogan for this reason so it is relevant to the discussion.

it is if there are other homegrown players out there for less who are better, or who we have missed out on.

As no one can seem to think of anyone thats available for less, who is of the standard we require, then thats the price you have to pay

  18. Travis Bickle

I think we would have but unfortunately we will more times than not lose a two horse race with West Ham.

The cost of homegrown players has become a self fulfilling cycle. So few are given a chance (we are one of the biggest culprits by the way), that when does break through and score a decent amount of goals, they are as rare as rocking horse ****, and the cost goes up. Once again the issue is the flawed nature of the 'homegrown quota' rule, which totally fails to deliver what it is intended to do.

They should either go the whole hog and insist that 20 of the squad need to be home grown, or stop the ridiculous academy tax.

Graham Taylor came to speak to our regional supporters group when he was at Aston Villa - it was a Friday evening and I think his team were playing at Ipswich the next day - he said he was trying to tie up a deal for a striker that he couldn't name at the time (just in case someone blew the gaff), as the evening proceeded he took a call from Doug Ellis and agreed the signing - he said he (the club) was having to pay £6 million and that he wasn't worth it but it was what they needed at the time and because he was British he had to pay over the odds... It's nothing new having to pay top dollar and the teams outside the Premier League are fully aware they are getting more money than what the player is actually worth - if this lad helps keep us in the division £15m is a good price to pay.

How will we as fans feel if there are no more transfers to/from Watford for this transfer window?

  22. Bubble

I would feel that the additions of Cleverley and Zarate are excellent - but failure to get rid of Ighalo was poor business as he wont be worth anything over £8,000,000 come the Summer if he continues to play as poor as he has for the last 12 months!

I would also say that we needed a pacy striker as our play is too one-dimensional at present and teams can play a high line against us and camp in our half (Bournemouth second half yesterday). Players like Amrabat and Success push sides back and give more room for creative players like Cleverley and Zarate to play. This is the biggest issue for me currently. Our defence is always under extreme pressure because the ball keeps coming back at us!!

Gutted if we don't get some cash for Ighalo this window, we'll be lucky to get £10m in the summer. Not disappointed if nobody else comes in. Yes we need a clinical finisher but we have Amrabat, Janmaat, Success, Pereyra and Zarate all to come back into the side plus Cleverley looks like he'll chip in with a few goals/assists.

SSN seem confident he is going to West Ham.

It's all well and good saying there are no HG players. but

Joe Allen moved last season were we in for him?
Tom Carrol played a stormer for Swansea on Saturday.
Looks like this lad Hogan is off to West Ham.
Jake livermore gone to West Brom.
Robert Snodgrass. West Ham and Boro interested.

Robbie Brady is still out of the news I'd really like us to have a serious bid for this fella and help address our lack of left sided players. If him and Holebas linked on the left like Janmaat and Amrabat have on the right and with Cleverly and Capoue (when he gets his ass in gear) in the middle we could have a decent supply to our strikers.

What would Hogan be worth if he wasn't HG? 2 pints of lager & a packet of crisps?

It's important to note that Snodgrass is not classified as Home-Grown therefore would need to replace one of the 17 foreign players in the 25 man Squad.
I'd still like him in the Squad but it might explain the lack of interest on our part.

Welsh players are treated differently due to the number of welsh clubs playing in England.

Scotland & Northern Ireland whilst part of the UK are treated as foreign in terms of football.

I saw Hogan playing live on TV the other week, and wasn't impressed. Admittedly, the service he got wasm't great, but that would be true at Watford too.
