This has nothing to do with Tottenham. The 1st couple of hours on Saturday night related to that, but as soon as it was looting rather than anger at police, it had move away from any link to Tottenham apart from using it as a catalyst and excuse.

And anyway, why should those areas have less knowledge of Tottenham than area such as Watford? Whether it's 10 miles or 500 miles, people still get the news through the same sources, or did you think they still rely on carrier pigeons in Liverpool?

Exactly. A lot of Gangs are just treating this as a game of oneupmanship to see who can loot the most, who can smash the most, who can burn the most.

Yes, and this Government are withdrawing any support they had to get onto training schemes which may have helped them.

How many of those instigating this actually attended such schemes though, except when it was a condition of their continuing to receive benefit or a bail condition?

Will this help? Hackney start at about 1pm yesterday, and from what I can tell was mostly finished by about 10pm. How do you put curfews in place when people are at work? What about people who are outside the area and try to get home without knowing that it is in place. Very difficult situation to organise.

Also, why should innocent people be stopped from going out because of a minority of thugs. If they banned all football matches because of a riot at one match would you agree with that? I thought the argument was that that approach was "giving in the terrorists" :naughty:

I agree with the sentiment but who in their right mind wants to go out in the midst of this? Right-minded people are cowering in their houses and workplaces, hoping the thugs and their fires don't reach their street. Unfortunately if people want this suppressed properly it needs extreme measures and those will impact on everyone, whether you're talking about curfews or switching off Blackberry Messenger or putting the army on the streets.

It shouldn't matter anyway. We're all in it together is the mantra of this government after all!

To be honest, I'd would quite like to go out and see for myself what is going on, but that's the photograher in me, and the fact I like to make up my own mind, but if you impose a curfew not only are you stopping anyone from being able to move in an area even if nothing is happening, whether it is a pizza delivery guy, a home help for a pensioner, or just someone trying to get home from work 50 miles away, but you are giving the Government the control of all the media as no-one else is able to report what is going on, and I don't trust ANY Government to tell me the truth.

If you ignore the fires, it did not look that unsafe on the streets last night apart from a few isolated incidences, which occur in these areas every night anyway. It's the fires which attract the attention (oooo look, bright burny stuff)

So every night in these areas the each shop in the high steet is smashed up and cleaned out of stock?

I would suspect that rather than use curfews, the police will instigate section 14 notices (usually used on demonstrations):

They can use that to say that more than 10 people can't congregate in the area, and then if they find groups they can use it to arrest them without them having to have caused trouble.

This allows them to stop stuff happens under commonly used legislation rather than impose things that will cause panic.

Looks like some people care about communities. 100's have turned out to clean up in Croydon:

Shows of strength like this may put off troublemakers tonight, as I reckon they are probably discussing what they can do to stop it themselves.

Sounds like there will be 16,000 police on streets tonight instead of 10,000 last night. Surely that will mean there are less to cover towns outside of London and put those more at risk, or are all "specials" be called in?
Best idea sounds to me that at first sign of trouble everyone stands on their doorsteps with neighbours to show they are not cowering behind the sofa. No need to be a vigilante if you can stand with 200 people in a street when 20 yobs coming running towards you, they will soon turn round and go, but if there are 200 in the next street as well, then they will have to stop eventually or run to the police to ask to be taken out of the area.

And all the more reason to do something - or at least stop others from doing harm. It's unlikely to reach my residential street but I'd be out if anyone targeted my neighbours. Wouldn't you?

As I said "no need to be a vigilante" also no need to actually confront people, just be there in numbers and they will go away. If you start confronting them it makes it harder for them to walk away without trouble.

    This is ridiculous.

The warden where my 91 year old mother lives in Uxbridge has told all the old folk to stay in their flats as police have said according to twitter there is going to be trouble from 4pm this afternoon. Of course, my mother, who is from Hoxton, never let the Blitz stop her from going out and says she's going to Bingo tonight. A little afanof has been despatched to round her up and bring her back here.

    What's it all about now?

Twitter is just spreading fear and panic. Hillingdon Council has had to tweet that Uxbridge is not being evacuated. It might be an idea to shut it down and stop reporting on rioting and rumours as it just perpetuates the problem.

Agree. Rumours circulated by social media causes more problems. Herts police are constantly having to quash rumours all day.

Let's shut down the whole internet, the mobile network, the BT network, all the TV and radio channels and the postal system, just in case someone believes anything that is sent to them..........

Sounds like bollox to me. Nothing on twitter or any news outlet, and you can't get over 1000 people together without it showing up somewhere.

Seriously, if the government isn't willing to do anything, I'll pay a bounty of 50k for everyone they bring to me with broken arms.

    Its despicable.

It sounds like a lot of people in London are getting out early on and the streets are becoming more & more deserted already. I don’t think it can be underestimated just how crucial tonight is in my opinion.
